Won the anthems
Congratulations England on the win
Bugger.
Need another bandwagon. Any suggestions Team?
Senegal
I'm on.
So, need yet another bandwagon
@MiketheSnow who shall jinx now?
I'm on the England wagon now. I've always supported them in the roundball
-
@Bovidae and develop a strategy to pressure Macguire because he'll fold like a cheap suit. One thing I dislike about England is that they tend to hold on to players based on reputation instead of making hard decisions. I remember the years with Steven Gerrard and co and the English midfield was shit but they still picked them.
Even though they blew up the green peace boat I hope the French win.

I'd rather see Brazil win, and I'm not even a fan. I watched one of their early games, their passing was so fun to watch. Do it for Pele
-
So far round of 16 has had no upsets. Japan vs Croatia should be tight. Logical final will be Brazil vs France.
-
I've got to give some love to Giroud becoming France's top goal scorer. He doesn't get much praise but his record at both club and international level is very impressive.

@canefan i've always been a fan of Brazil. The game is second nature to them. They might have problems against a bigger side, like the French or English perhaps.
I’m not a fan of how this Brazilian side play. Far too conservative/defensive. It may get them the choccies, but for a game that lasts as long as football - 100 minutes - I actually want to be entertained with lots of attack!
-
@ACT-Crusader I agree they don't match the great Brazil's of past, but they are good at controlling possession and pressuring when they lose it. Can't stand Neymar but he is good and is additive to this team.

Japan 1-0 Croatia
HalftimeThoroughly deserved
Croatia have been wasteful in the box
-
Croatia have woken up, finally
Brilliant cross and header
Japan 1-1 Croatia
55mins -
Japan 1-1 Croatia
After extra timePenalties it is
-
Absolutely rubbish penalty taking from Japan gives Croatia the win
Japan had plenty of opportunity to win this in regulation
Not their time
-
Japan committing harakiri with that run of penalty “attempts”. Dont think I’ve seen worse at this level.
-
Wondered what Leicester Fainga'anuku was doing playing for Brazil. Turns out it’s his cousin Éder Gabriel Militão.
-
This could get ugly
-
Men against boys.
-
Brazil are looking scarily good.

For all the talk about soccer being more competitive than rugby, we have 8 winners
Uruguay
Italy
West Germany/Germany
Brazil
France
Spain
England
ArgentinaDon't see that changing this tournament either. Would be stunned if winner was Morocco, Switzerland, Croatia, Netherlands or Portugal.

Of those, only France and Spain have broken into the club in the last 30 years? IIRC
-
@Billy-Tell compared with rugby's four...
Add to that four France, Argies Ireland, Wales, Scotland and you have nine teams have made RWC semis
16 teams have made the FIFA WC semi's but have yet to win it. Six of them (Netherlands, Croatia, Portugal, South Korea, Turkey) in the last 20 years
As you would expect from the global game, football is way more competitive
-
@dogmeat Ireland ain't ever made no semi
Quarters and out is their tradition
-
@mariner4life oops
It was almost even worse. It was only at the last second I remembered France.....
Now ask me about the 1967 EOYT and I'm fine
-
Would have thought, on paper, Portugal were a fair chance to break in as a new champion.
I haven't watched them (or almost any) beyond the highlights, so not a comment based on form, or eye test.
They have a fair smattering of players playing for European club giants (plus Wolverhampton .... )
Plus have recent pedigree in the Euros (and Nations League), even if they then interpose that with underperforming or averagperfroming in the world cups.Apart from Ronaldo, they are not a generation on the decline.
Only missing Jota.

Other that Ruben dias there defence and goalie is shocking tho... so may struggle to go far in the big shinding

The Dutch have had some good teams through the years that have never kicked on.. likewise I don't expect to this time either, but surprised they never cracked it.
France looking like team to beat for me though

The Dutch are the football equivalents of French rugby.
-
This Dutch team is noticeably lacking in flair and pretty pragmatic based around a back 5 with van Dijk at the centre of it. Expect them to sit back and let the Argies have the ball and look to hit them on the break down the flanks.
England v France is a fascinating match-up and it's really hard to know how it will go - much depends on whether Southgate goes toe to toe and picks a 4-3-3 or he reverts back to cautious and 5 at the back to try to stifle the threat on the French flanks.
Brazil should cruise past Croatia - should as I would expect Croatia to sit deep, soak up pressure and look to score from a set piece.
For tomorrow's games, Morocco are well fancied to upset Spain and have the game to do it. Portugal always seem to be less than the sum of their parts and the Swiss are pretty canny. It screams extra time.

That didn't age well
Well done Morocco
-
If Switzerland can win we will have Morocco to make semi finals.
What an amazing display by Morocco.
-
With Bono as keeper Morocco had the edge.
-
I didn't see the game but there were predictions that Morocco could upset. I'll have to watch the penalty shootout.

Morocco missed some absolutely golden opportunities in extra time then Spain hit the post with time up.
But I can never understand how such well paid players can be so average at penalties.
-
Good and brave call by the coach of Portugal. Without Ronaldo's inflated ego and old legs, they have a better chance of winning.
-
This isn’t going to extra time
What a goal

Ronaldo needs the nickname the Aussie Cricket Team used to give Kevin Pietersen: FIGJAM
F### I'm Good, Just Ask Me.

I would just cut him from the team. You can only tolerate an ego if the player is indispensable which is no longer the case
Schär is having a mare on defence.
-
This will require a comeback of vs FRA euros proportions. Portugal look way better.
