I'll just add that I'm a big fan of well designed cycleways that get lycra clad piston wristed gibbons off the roads. And excellent transit systems (Tokyo, Honkers).

Cities with bikes are awesome. Clean, fresh and much quieter.
Iโll probably never set foot in Chch again anyway so guess my opinion ainโt relevant.

@kiwiwomble Those wide flat and straight roads are one of the absolutely key reasons dropping trams in the middle of a few of them makes sense in Chch. Ok I've certainly underestimated the cost of doing it, but logistically in comparison to other cities ala Sydney as an example, it's gotta be easier and cheaper.

That was a massive missed opportunity to rethink public transport in and around Christchurch, total dropped ball there (note that's ECan, not CCC in this particular case). I remember doing a focus group on it, but it went nowhere unfortunately because everyone baulked at the cost.

But the counter argument to his is the lanes work so well you don't notice anyone using them? That's also moronic. Perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle, but I'm not going to stand on Colombo Street with a clicker to check.

@shark The counter argument is accurate for bus lanes but not so much cycle paths. Akl Transport do have 26 counters up around the city. Unsurprisingly cycle activity peaked during the 2020 Lvl 4 lockdown.
As a result that year was best ever with a 11% decrease in 2021. However there were still 3.2 million cycle movements recorded which sounds like a lot but averages out at a daily figure across the 26 sites of 337. In mitigation it includes some very quiet suburban and rural routes and quite a few sites were down for some of the year. The busiest street recorded 1,200 per day.
The one Hoskings famously targeted was Nelson St FFS. Riding down that quasi motorway without lane protection would require balls so big you wouldn't be able to get on a bike. It averages 524/day.
