According to kiwis in the crowd.

I stand by my comments that the "Australian" in question was probably from the Auckland region (or, even worse, further north ) and the Cantabs standing nearby didn't recognise his accent as true Kiwi as a result.

As I have said before, I have witnessed 2 Aussies almost get in fisticuffs over one being a twat about Kiwis and the other ashamed of his behavior at rugby, only reason I didn't get involved is I was with my at the time, new boss!

Twats will be twats, doesn't matter what colour they support, in fact there are always a small number who go to be just twats and have no interest in the sport.
-

I was at the Christchurch test for 5 days and the crowd was really good natured. Definitely a whole lot better behaved than some of the test match crowds I've been in overseas.

there's a video on stuff that accompanies the article, it shows the 1 bloke they kicked out, I'm actually sitting in the back ground.

All he did was say a couple of swear words. There was defintitely no abuse of Wraners kids or family.

.... Obviously I can't speak for the other crowds around the country, but in Christchurch everything was very tame.

The Basin was pretty tame. A few chats with the men on the boundary but no abuse
-

His first class batting for Essex has been pretty poor for a couple of seasons, tho' Essex is a tricky pitch, but still its division 2.

But bowling wise he's been outstanding, he was their 2nd (I think) highest wicket taker last year - 50ish wickets at 25. If he didn't bowl he'd be nowhere near the Essex 1sts, but they'd probably play him as a specialist bowler if that was the only option. Its always been somewhere brisk medium pace dibble can be good - Napier & Bopara have done well there for years.

Weirdly his spot in the curent NZ test team would probably be batting 8 & bowling 1st change. So its sort of hard to see if he'd get into our test side, on the last few years I'd struggle to argue he's a better batsman than Anderson.

T20 he's been great for Essex, smashing very fast very big. He'd walk into our T20 side post Baz, and probably be a solid option in the ODI side as a pinch hitting opener who is good for 5-10 overs in the right conditions.

No chance of him playing for NZ ever again as Essex pay him a really good wack, love him & he plays in a low stress environment all based on him being a non international. Bit like Hamish Marshall I'm not sure he'd get a CC contract if he was an overseas pick, but as a "local" he's there as long as he wants. Whereas Jeetan Patel could play for NZ again & any county in England would pick him up as an overseas pro.

Still averages over 40 for NZ at test level, I went through a phase of thinking NZ needed him, to thinking naa fuck off ya drunk fluffybunny but now back to thinking he'd look great at 5 especially with the more than useful bowling record in his armoury now. The guy who snuck in 101 consecutive tests leaves a huge hole.
-

Ryder meets Hesson, but no talk of NZ comeback

Batsman Jesse Ryder had met with New Zealand coach Mike Hesson following the first Test against Australia in Wellington, but there appears to be no change in the status quo with regard to his possible return to the national side.

Ryder, 31, has not played for New Zealand since January 31, 2014, after he visited a bar along with allrounder Doug Bracewell on the eve of the Auckland Test against India. That incident was the last in a string of alcohol-related discipline issues Ryder had while he was part of the New Zealand set up. His career stands at 18 Tests, 48 ODIs and 22 T20Is at the moment.

Do you want Jesse Ryder play for NZ again?

"Jesse had a coffee with a few of us while we were in Wellington. We had a good chat and he was able to tell us how things were going in his life and in his cricket," Hesson said in a statement. "We often catch up with players around the country. I don't want to go into any detail of what we talked about but we agreed to keep in touch. We'll see how things go."

It was reported by stuff.co.nz that Ryder had initiated the meeting and that it also included New Zealand players Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, team manager Mike Sandle, and Aaron Klee, who was Ryder's manager until February 2014 and is reported to be working with the batsman again.

Ryder did not feature in the Island of Origin T20 that took place at Basin Reserve in Wellington on February 28. He was the second highest run-scorer in the recently concluded Ford Trophy, New Zealand's domestic one-day competition, making 506 runs at an average of 56 for Central Districts. He scored 62 in the final, which Central Districts won against Canterbury by 156 runs.

Central Districts team manager Lance Hamilton praised the influence Ryder had on the side. "We always knew he was going to score runs but the massive bonus was his contribution in the dressing room. He was awesome," Hamilton said. "When he got 136 in the major semifinal and we were dead and buried, he got out then he was up in the dressing room within 30 seconds telling the boys 'we've got this, come on boys'. It was unreal. Even his contributions in the team meetings, helping the younger guys, the boys all enjoyed having him around.

"After the final the boys were partying in the dressing room for a couple of hours and he was drinking lemonade then he got up and shook everyone's hand and gave them all a hug and jumped in his car and drove back to Wellington."

88% of people in the poll want him back in the team. Bring back Jesse!! :)
-

Is it coincidence that Jessie waited for McCullum to retire before talking with Hesson?

On the face of it, it does appear to be curious timing from Ryder. (Ie Jesse has a potential personality difference with McCullum).

Read more like Jesse was in town, caught up with a few of the guys, the last chance he had to do so before they head off to the T20 / IPL & he starts either pre in Essex or IPL (?). Had a chat. No change at all in his position.

And the NZ press reported it as "Jesse in talks to return!!!"

Fuck, Jesse Ryder is an "all rounder" as well now apparently. Never realised we had a team of 10 Gary Sobers and Imran Khans and a keeper/batsman.

A bit rough Hooroo, Ryder got in by virtue of runs which weren't "handed" to him, that's for sure.
-

Yeah, I kind of agree.

It was poorly executed on my part.

What I meant was that he seems lazy, and if something falls over, someone else just picks him up (Move to Otago back to Central and to England etc etc) It never seems if he has to work hard to get rewarded.
-

Sometimes is the issue with natural talent: when it comes down to hard choices, follow the path of least resistance, because its served you well so far.

-

I sorta get your point in a roundabout way Hooroo. I always thought he was a guy that when on song made it look much easier than Ross Taylor ( who lets be honest can look fucken ugly at times especially when that slog sweep goes wrong ) JR looks like a guy who coulda cruised and averaged early 40s ( like Mark Waugh or David Gower ) or knuckle down and possibly been our best ever. Some batsmen just have "that" touch.....Tendulkar, Lara......

A rugby equivalent might be Ma'a Nonu who early on was adept at tucking the ball and trampling anyone under foot, that can only get you so far. He could have gone down as a pretty good AB but to his immense credit he learnt to pass, kick, read the game etc and most impressively to me at least run up some of Wellys particularly nasty hills to build the lungs, awesome dedication for a power athlete. That's why he's possibly the best 12 who ever played for the Men in Black.
-

I'll just leave this here. I really enjoy Kimber's writing, and he is a big Jesse fan. So am I, but I'm not sure that test cricket is his place.
-

Don't get me wrong, when he bats, especially in test cricket, it is a thing of beauty. I love watching him bat, like I loved watching the Waugh brothers bat.

The way he can look so relaxed against the quickest of bowlers, is something to admire
-

Yep and that's precisely what makes it so frustrating. Williamson/Taylor/Ryder one after the other would be as good as anything going about in test cricket now and far and away better than anything in Black Caps history.
-

I think theres a wee bit of over hype over Ryder. If you look at what he did in tests, he scored a few huge knocks against India & the Bangles. Played Aussie 4 times & was shithouse.

Averaged 41 from his first 18 tests. Matt Sinclair averaged 43 from his first 18. And the Fern regard him as a total failure. And his big knocks were against SA & Pak, not fucking India in Napier.....Lou Vincent after 18 tests? 47 average. one of his tons was v Aussie in Perth

And most of all, his last few seasons he's been reeeeally average in Essex. The idea we should be jerking ourselves senseless at the thought we might get back an overweight, out of form, 31 year old to solve all our issues - as opposed to say giving Nichols a chance to settle in, or move Watling down & hand the gloves to a young guy, only works if you are a "bit" delusional over what Jesse did in his 18 tests & haven't seen him bat in the last 3 years.

As a T20 player fuck year. He would REALLY add something, but tests? Fat, less good, Matt Sinclair come on down...
-
You know Gollum ... as much as I hate your pompous, self-important, over the top posts ...
... I kind of find I end up agreeing with you ...
... I hate that

-

I'd be willing to give him a few more goes before casting him on the scrapheap. But yeah some excellent points Gollum....

-

There was a huge public clamour for Ryder a couple of months before RWC - and the BCs seemed to go alright without him. His batting does seem to have regressed in recent years - he did look like he could be a really good test player when he first came into the team but nothing in his recent past indicates he has the single-minded commitment to become a test batsman again.
