Cricket 2021: NZ in England and WTC Final

India announcing their playing 11 this early and with both spinners feels like a mind game. Almost if they are trying to push us to drop what has made us successful. The 4 seamer attack.
India can go with that bowling attack but I don’t think we can. -

India can go with that bowling attack but I don’t think we can. It’s an extremely strong team that they’ve named which is totally unsurprising.
With the exception of Gill who is unproven ( but averages 60 in first class cricket ! ) they’re all varying degrees of bloody good to superb.
But then again, our team is too, we have to remember that.
Potentially worrying for us is how vastly superior their spinners are.

India can go with that bowling attack but I don’t think we can.Yep. How much is that pitch really going to turn?
We have to play to our strengths, swing and seam. They will play to theirs with spin. I would say that both batting lineups could struggle a bit with the quality of both sides bowling strengths.
How's the weather, he says hoping that forecasts are wrong and he can watch cricket tonight.

Sounds like the 1st day will be a wash out, may not matter in the end as they will have a 6th day to make up for any time lost.
Think it would have been better if Ajaz finished with 0/233 from that 2nd test. Much easier to have ignore him. -

It’s gonna be fascinating to see if he gets the nod.

If there's rain and cloud around for most of the test, and it's going to be on/off again, I almost wonder whether to select Young instead of CDG/Patel, have extra cover with the bat for the swinging ball, and trust four seamers to make the most of the cloud and damp. A third opener almost...
- Latham
- Conway
- Young
- Williamson
- Taylor
- Nicholls
- Watling
- Jamieson
- Wagner
- Southee
- Boult
Though I think they'll read similar things into the pitch conditions/weather forecast and go with CDG at 7 instead. I'm a big fan of Patel, but I think the weather may count him out. I suppose we'll know in about 11 hours...
-
@donsteppa that's my team right there. Could fiddle the top order around 3/4 a bit, but fundamentally a good choice to play Young.
My mate had the interesting suggestion for future to play the final, but only award a winner if there is a result... drive both sides to super attacking cricket. Not sure I like it, but it could make the game really different

If that team is selected ( which I wouldn’t be averse to ) I doubt Young would bat three. He’d be six at best.

One thing I hope everyone agrees on is that test cricket must have a WTC type points system on every test match in the future. We can't have the damp squib that was the lords test as a desirable outcome

If they went with that team I'd bat him in the top three given his early summer County experience this year with Durham with the Duke ball in sometimes good and sometimes mud weather. I could see him being chosen at six to avoid shuffling the middle order.... but this looks like being one of those games where lots of things are out of the ordinary so maybe a shuffle is okay.
With potentially half the test being lost to rain, I wonder if one or both teams will think about batting for the draw as a way of sharing the title. Looks like the sort of weather where it will be hard to win a Test, but easy to lose it if either team collapses within a session early on.

Yeah I dunno, Williamson 4 and Taylor 5 just looks all wrong to me. Remember he’s new and the old boys will definitely have final say on where they want to bat.
-
@donsteppa To be honest, the thing that worries me most is that we'll try to squeeze in too many bowlers and leave ourselves shorthanded when it comes to batting.
So, I'm in favour of just about any combination that doesn't see Jamieson at 7.
But, if we played an extra batsman - rather than Young, I'd be somewhat inclined to play Blundell and bat him at 6.
He's played more tests than Young and I daresay he's batted down the order a bit more.
I don't think this is the game to start shuffling Kane and Rossco down.

That order was based on me imagining 100% overcast conditions and a batting minefield against the new Duke ball for six days. I'll have changed my mind in half an hour and I'll be trying to fit Patel back in...
Roll on team naming at 9.30pm.

80ml of rain forecast over the 5 days. This is going to one of the biggest flops ever.

@donsteppa may not have a toss. Keep us all in the dark for another 24 hours🙂

Don't say it! By that stage I'll have overthought it into Blundell opening the bowling and Patel keeping to counter the river of water running down the ground.

More chance of Taylor running someone out in river like conditions too.
-
@chris-b Bit before my time, but I would have liked to read the book. Cricket books are a weakness, I end up buying a whole bunch whenever I go to India. Hard to find them in the US.

Agree with the thinking. On current form I would go with Young but Blundell did prove himself in Melbourne to be able to play a big knock on a big stage, another variant could be:
- Latham
- Blundell
- Williamson
- Conway
- Taylor
- Nicholls
- Watling
8-11. Seamers.
From a standing start this is the batting order I would likely go with... but Conway seems to be set at opener so better leave well enough alone so if Blundell or Young do play they should bat 6 (and hopefully take the second new ball if all goes well!)

we share it with a draw - I'l lframe that as 'joint winners'. We get silverware, teams get 1.2M USD each. It's a good outcome

Play abandoned for the day. Gutting for you.
-
I wonder if this game seriously starts like being rained out if there is any scope to extend this? Both teams have nothing scheduled immediately after this and the ground isn't needed until the June 28. Obviously there are lot more logistics involved (although in some ways less than usual with COVID) but you would imagine having gone through two weeks quarantine etc India might be more willing to make something happen than usual.
-
Pissed it down with rain all day. Smart money already on the draw.

All in with full seam attack.... I think India named their team but we have delayed? Or have we named our 11 now?
-
The toss was also delayed so no NZ team named yet.

Actually there was a reserve day that has been used so no play actually lost as yet.

I'm looking at the rest of the forecast. We ain't getting five days.

@crucial stupid weather..
Hmmm anyone get the feeling India going to get the ICC to quickly write coin toss into tie rules? We are shit at those…

Coin toss could be the winning anyway if those covers come off and we have a steamy seamer underneath.
Good call by NZ to wait on the XI though. I'm leaning toward neither spinner or allrounder but an extra bat now.
Doesn't look like that pitch is going to get much baking. Covers will be on and off. -

Sure looks that way. We go full out batting with Young or will gamble on CDG (who might wobble it around in those conditions as a bowling option). Doesn't sound like Ajaz or Mitch would add too much bowling wise. Mitch with the bat obviously but Young is a specialist bat.
I don't like the idea of sharing the trophy. I want to win the damn thing. Go in balls and all. That means bat big (and once or slightly more) or we smoke them with a ball moving around given that it is likely to be a very disrupted match and shortened as well.
The coin toss will likely decide it, which is a shame.

Santner is sitting in MIQ back in NZ. Not an option at all.

Draw paying 2.24 at the TAB. That is good money I reckon.

Best news of the whole thing!!! 😏

We don't need a spinner.
I think I would play Young or CDG. Young at 6 would add a lot of starch to the batting. Blundell didn't look in great nick in the last game.
CDG might add a bit with the ball, but honestly we probably don't need another bowler.
With the rain around it seems likely we'll either get through them quickly and/or have lots of rain breaks to rest up.
