Whilst I completely agree with the sentiments, on the other hand, were the people who named our towns taking the absolute piss.
For example, why would you name a town Gore, I mean friggen Gore, and ignore the Maori name Maruawai. I mean, I would visit Maruawai, I wouldn't dream of going to Gore. Fuck that!
Te Kohurau became Kurow (or Kooz to locals). FFS, what were they thinking?
Let's get rid of the shit town names in NZ! -

or, alternatively, a school is replacing names from guys who lived 150 years ago in another part of the world with something that holds a little more local relevance. But sure, have a pile on.
Historical significance rather than racially selected?

no I dunno anything about someone being defender of Zulu rights on the other side of the world - that's just coincidence - the people they're named after are all local settlers.

@williethewaiter I don't know which Colenso you are talking about but the S African one was famous as it was a battle in the Boer War... but you must know who Bishop Selwyn is/was...?

The Colenso after which loads of places are named in NZ is William Colenso. He was the printer who printed the Treaty of Waitangi, and who was responsible for the definitive account of the Treaty signing. Ironically he may have been one of the most deserving of all the people celebrated in school house names etc. Apart from his fling with one of the local wahine here in Napier which was, you know, a bad thing.

Good on ya Selwyn, put that mouthy bitch in her place.
Ah such simple times.....even for the 70s this is so hilariously chauvinistic.

@jc right, I should know that, thanks.
NB what is wrong with a bit of night-time embossing with the Napier Wahine? Not much, apart from I understand she was a maid and he knocked her up. That's quite often frowned upon in polite society.

"because they're not Maori they're racist".
Brilliant, so they are going to make them racist.
But it's reverse racist. So that's OK 👌
I believe the current terminology is 'anti-fascist.

nope. bunch of nobodies unless it's his missus or someone. All seem to be names pretty connected with the immediate area and the local mission.. these are the 4 punters the school house names come from.
The first Bishop of the Mission was Bishop John Coleridge Patteson, who tragically died during an incident at the island of Nukapu in 1871 along with the missionary the Rev. Joseph Atkin. The work of the Mission continued under the second Bishop John Richardson Selwyn (son of the Mission’s founder). A notable member of the mission at that time was Elizabeth Colenso who taught at the mission between 1876 and 1898.

yeh sounds like it. No idea who they are but point is sounds like a good local connection to the school so no need to change names.
-
@williethewaiter So named after Cocksman Colenso's wife then?
Who knew that the Far North was so overrun with bishops back in the 1800s.

Pompallier House, man! New Zealand's first rammed earth building, I believe. The 1800s up north had it going on..
oh you were being sar-cas-tic.
I get it. But not everyone knows Russell was the capital. -
My mother came from Gore and one of my oldest friends comes from Gore.
They got out quickly.

Think that was the name of my house at school in Lower Hutt.
To think I had a racist education.
