Let's whack Sutcliffe in there.
And Mr Ryder. Better average than a lot of those nominated with only 2 not outsDang forgot about opening bat thread. And Ryder was just to make the post worthwhile. Make of it what you will.

Career was too short and whilst I believe if he’d made a go of it he had the talent to surpass Rossco he chose not to.
Forget him.

at his peak, though, he was exceptional. Smoking 150km/h over the boundaries and giggling at the bowlers. Loved him to bits, but self destructed.
if we can have peak bond, we can have peak Ryder

How serious are ppl about players batting at (or even close) to their main batting position/ position of success?
Because at 6 for example (if I understand how to use ESPN stats), Watling (ave. 46) and Coney (ave 45) lead the averages at that position for players with more than 10 matches.

I loved him and went in to bat for him on here on numerous occasions when some were having a go about his weight and piss drinking.
But Bond was a much more dominant player in his 18 tests than Jesse boy.

ironically, Ryder played 18 tests.
Scored big against india - including a hundred and a double hundred over there. Didn't fare well in AUs, and shat the bed against pakistan in his last series.
I loved him to bits ... but probably right, not quite in the top echelon

The thought of him coming in fully focussed and fired up at five in a test line up behind KW and Rossco had me frothing. He was beautiful to watch. Nicholls has made a fine fist of it but I don't think he would have kept a teetotal and fit Jesse out of the team.
A real shame he had his demons.

Depending on how you measure the stats (minimum matches /innings) he is way out in front batting at 5 (11 matches there, average of 50)
Next is McCullum, who when not keeping averaged 49 at 5 - that’s pretty good. He had 21 innings there too.
