    Chris Cairns.

Technically correct big hitter who was also a hell of a bowler

    Martin Donnelly

Picked for NZ at 19 after one first class game. Played three tests in England helped save the first test at Lords on debut.

    War intervened commanded tanks throughout

Toured England again in 49 averaged 77 in the tests without a NO. Never played for NZ again but fashioned a remarkable record at FC Level in England (probably tougher than playing for NZ) Described by Wisden as the best left hander in the world.

I know it's not a popular opinion on here, but I would think about Fleming at five or six, and name him captain (NZ's best? Certainly since I have been watching cricket). I reckon he would do a hell of a lot better without the added pressure of carrying the lineup. Despite his trouble converting 50s into 100s, he was class. And one hell of a slip.

    Yeah, nah.

Yeah, you could think about it, but nah he doesn't make it as a batsman.

Yeah, great captain, but nah because he doesn't make the side.

Yeah, he was one hell of a slip, but nah, being able to catch doesn't put him in best batsman contention.

yeah righto. in that case i want Nathan Astle in the side. Averages slightly less, but scored more hundreds at a better clip. Had THAT 200. And can trundle the arm over

Good point. Let's put him in too. How about Hartland and Murray to open?

    pithy

cricket isn't a team game, it's an individual game played by teams

and in a Best Ever you don't pick a guy on a hunch that he might be better with other players around him, in a position he didn't play for NZ.

Apart from openers batting positions mean bugger all. Otherwise let's have polls for each batting positions then. And while we are at it, why pick Boult with Hadlee and Bond? They are all new ball bowlers. Surely by your logic we would have to pick a 'third'seamer.

    Got me there! What's cricket?

Serious question. Are you implying a player who bats at 3 will shit the bed if asked to bat at 6? Or am I missing something? Which is quite possible because one of my faults is not being able to read Mrs Crazy Horse's mind. Apparently.

yeah, i pretty much am. Guys who bat at 3 and guys who bat at 6 play very differently. Guys who bat at 4 play different to guys who bat at 3. 5 is different to 4 etc. It requires different strengths.

That's why you get guys with wildly different averages in different spots.

Now, left to his own devices, maybe Flem was 6 who was forced to bat 3. But we have zero evidence for it. And therefore he is either an option at 3 (where he's probably 3rd in line) or he's not in the side.

John R Reid anyone? Before my time but his reputation put him up there with the best when we were mud.

And that Cape Town test post Tangiwai with the bandaged head.

    Bowled a bit too.

I actually thought that we weren't. That was kinda the rules. Might be in the "general" thread.

Balance, captaincy, all rounders, weren't supposed to enter into it. It was pure individual skill. Our eleven best players in their specialist positions.

@mariner4life yeah different roles, but I reckon if you can bat high in the order then you can bat lower down. Not necessarily the other way around. It's not like you are coming in at exactly the same time and circumstances each innings. Except for openers, but I always found them a bit weird. Like accountants.

you are going to need more than that to make this team these days (thanks to our current XI)

last shot is totally justified too

Didn't see those rules, but I thought it was frowned upon in these parts if we read the whole thread.
