@Kirwan said in Pay to not see ads:

Yeah, we had it in the old software. With the changes Duluth has been making we have more options again on how to handle that.

To be honest, I'd like some ideas from people because the google ad reviews are getting painful.

We could chuck up a Patreon and people that donate/subscribe there can be added to a group that no longer sees adds?

As we have low costs, it wouldn't take much to cover those entirely and just remove the ads altogether. And if we go over we can put that into better hardware/memory to improve performance or add features.

    What are people's thoughts?

    My thoughts are:

    1. I'm in, where do I send the pingers?
    2. If I pay extra can you give @jegga a really disappointing avatar and remove his ability to edit it. Or maybe change his username to GFYs

But seriously, it's a great idea. And we should also have t shirts again.

    My thoughts.
    1 GFYs
    2 that’s it

I'm in for patereon or sending a few via PayPal. Or we all just pool the money and put a multi on every week for $50 and if you lose you are out. Cream will rise to the top turn $500 into $5000 and 10 years of hosting etc.

Still working out if we want to do this or not, also interested in hearing from people who think it's a bad idea and why they think that.

T-shirts is a blast from the past, I think Bart's old business used to make those? Getting old, can't remember. "Bring Back the Biff"

@nzzp yeah I only get them on my android, which is either a bar on the top or bottom of the screen which you click to hide.

As an aside, in a similar vein (TSF thread without a Hijack wouldnt be TSF)

I was out seeing a client last week, and started asking quesitons about the generators they had as I was interested in getting one for home as we have water tanks and with no power, no water...anywhoo, for the next 24 hours I got ads for Generators...totally random or tinfoil hat shit?

Nope. Four of us were talking about kayak fishing at smoko and two of us got ads for kayaks within minutes.

I think it's a good idea (the one off or monthly payment, not the gambling ... gamble responsibly), although do we get a discount to avoid the politics section or do we have to pay extra?

    Probably monthly

@Kirwan is just looking at the options now

I'm thinking we'll just turn the ads off completely. If people are willing to donate - great. If not, that's cool too

Does anyone think this is a bad idea?

    Nope.

Maybe posters could make their side bets result in a donation e.g. loser donates 20. Would be better than eating hats or Beiber avatars

Hang on, just realised that @NTA could donate all his power wall savings as recompense for boring us about it for years!

I'm in. Those descending ads on my phone drive me nuts.

It's easier to do it once a year, as we used to on PayPal, but monthly is fine too.

How about something like a limit on the number of posts you can make a day unless you are a subscriber?

    1. The Fern would still be free to read.
    2. Irregular users could still post up to two posts a day for free on the Sports Forum
    3. Post more often than that or on the Off Topic Forum or the Politics Forum you'd have to pay $2 a month or $20 a year.

Assuming costs are kept as low as now, then that would probably remove the need for ads.

Think I still have a TSG "Dingo stole my world cup" one somewhere!

I'm in for a $ contribution to kill the ads.

Ok, I have the basic page in place. I will double check I've not screwed anything up and trial it later this evening.

In the meantime, Duluth is turning off the ads.

    Thanks for the feedback.

@Duluth @Kirwan you boys are too fast for government work. Where was the working group?

Great work, Keen to donate let me know where and when. Personally I'm happy for donors to be anonymous... Preference is not to differentiate people
