Cricket: NZ vs Aus

@barbarian That's a fake ranking for Australia - and especially at home.
You guys should be at least required to field a couple of Marshes if you're going to be ranked fifth!

Proof that the ranking system is flawed. 5th place is taking the piss
-
@Chris-B exactly. 5th is right given the dogshit teams tehy were putting out when their best batsmen were suspended, and they had to rotate their top 3 bowlers.
Now though? And at home? 5th is a joke.

So we are the poor schmucks that have to suffer the brunt
-
@mariner4life Exactly!
That current bowling attack is possibly the best they've had since Lillee and Thommo - it's at least equal to McGrath, Warne and Co. - especially on a pitch like Perth.
I'm doubtful anyone would have fared better than us in the first innings in Perth against that bowling. Maybe India if their openers had hung around longer to provide a bit of protection for Kohli.

Our batsmen need to show a shitload more discipline and application in Melbourne. I still can't understand why Ajaz wasn't considered, he would have rocked it on that deck. Not quite as shocking as omitting Sam Cane, but so much has to go our way to win without us shooting ourselves in the foot
But is Cane an opener?
-
Test match cricket is basically a question of whether or not you can win away from home. You need a few things to go your way when playing here, let alone in Perth in sweltering conditions and in form Aussie seamers. These aren’t excuses, just the reality.
Given MCG conditions are likely to be quite different I think they will stick with the current openers.
When I look at our squad overall I’m not seeing a whole lot of ‘pick me, I demand it” from those that sat on the sidelines in Perth.
-
So Lockie has come home. Do we replace him with:
Another pace bowler?
A spinner?
An opening batsman? -
@Chris-B Lockie is interesting. Another NZ fast bowler who is short and bowling at the limitations of his body. Aside from breaking down he didn't have the control to be demanding at this level of cricket. Test cricket is the form of cricket that finds players out.
-
@kev Yeah.
I guess to be fair, it was his debut test and he was potentially trying too hard (maybe hence the injury).
Worth more cracks, I think - but, I'm pretty mystified as to why they picked Matt Henry ahead of him in Hamilton. A 1-0 lead in a series that didn't count for the WTC - better place to blood him than in the hotbed of Perth.
-
@kev One good thing about Lockie is that he's a bit older (28) and I've read that makes a difference with injuries compared to really young guys who are pretty much still growing - up till about 24.
And it's not a back injury that has got him.
-
Kyle Jamieson called up. A century batting at 8 vs England... my instinctive reaction was to wonder whether he could open vs Australia/do worse than the incumbent
-
@Donsteppa Interesting!
I guess there's very little chance of Jamieson playing, because Matt Henry is surely ahead of him in the queue and Henry surely won't play unless Boult (or one of the other seamers) isn't fit.
Jamieson might be handy in the nets though, because he's about the same height as Starc (even taller, I think) - unfortunately, last time I saw him his pace was more like CdG's!

Isnt there a 2 day game vs Victoria coming up?
Be interesting which bowlers play in that one given workload and injury.
-
@KiwiMurph I'd guess all of Southee, Wagner and de Grandhomme will sit it out.
Be interesting to see who opens the batting - I'd be somewhat inclined to go with Raval and whomever his potential replacement would be - Blundell, Nicholls or BJ.
Tom Latham could bat at 5.
-
Whats Jordie Barrett up to at the moment...?

I’ve seen this reported but have had no luck finding out where this is being played.

Seems to be the best approach. Feels like it's our batsmen that need the most work so watch as we lose the toss and spend a day and a half in the field.

If you are nearby perhaps you could pop in and drop something off for the players

After the stuffing we got last test, are they sure l'loads of Kiwis' are goig to turn up?

Day 1 they will as people have been planning this since the game was announced. Day 2? Depends a lot on Day 1!
Perth did show that 2 tests against England with Archer is no preparation for Australia if you play them on puddings. And it was a nice touch on a bouncy pitch with uneven bounce to open the bowling in the 2nd innings with 2 x sub-130km/h bowlers.
-
yes I am looking forward to going to Day 1 and 2 of the test, after Perth it will likely be another 30 years before we get a second invite, unless of course we are competitive and that it is profitable in a big way over multiple days.
..hopefully I haven't witnessed 2 NZ innings during the 2 days I am there
-
Ok so a bit more detail on this 2 day match hidden in article
"Boult expects to get through "three to four" spells in a two-day match against a Victorian XI at Melbourne's Scotch College starting on Friday"

Well we're on track to break the record for both attendance on day 1 and attendance across the first 4 days for a non-Ashes Boxing Day test, so we'll tick the profitability boxes.
-
@Cyclops given how highly the Indian tours are regarded that would be impressive if we do break it, so I hope it is accurate. That will buy the locals enough sandpaper to last them a few more series against the saffas..
-
I was there 32 years ago with plenty of whanau and will never forget it. Putting aside the end, day 5 was a brilliant day of cricket from NZ.
Sure I cried after we didn’t win (I was 10) and refused to move from the MCG bench seats.
Eventually I got up and I’ll never forget my uncle saying to me as we made the long walk to the MCG car park, “boy, we’ll get them next time”.
And sure enough my uncle proved to be prophetic because we knocked over the Aussies in a thriller ODI in Perth 😎

Was that the one run win? Dipak brilliant one handed overhead catch on the boundary, Hadlee bowled out early and had to bowl the last ball of his spell again after a no ball (would have been a dot as he beat a play and miss by Steve Waugh) and then getting Waugh to edge one to the keeper of the rebowled ball, Bracewell grabbing the skyed catch in covers off the last ball?
Don't remember it at all...

Your agging thread seems to be a bit off if you remember all that, although I'm not sure sports results count. Do you know where your car keys are?

I can remember shit from 30 years ago. What I had for breakfast ...
As for the keys: no idea. Which is a worry as I'm sitting in the car wondering how to start it ...

You know what particularly worries me about this post is my eyes... I spelt "for" as "foe" originally, so edited it and changed it to "fot" ...

And half of the warm-up game has been canned because it's going to be too hot.
Scotch College is apparently the venue @ACT-Crusader
