NBA season 2019/20

This was the accompanying article.
The NBA tweeted a photo of the Thunder’s arrival in Orlando. Chris Paul was pictured in a sweatsuit with at least three bags. Adams, from what we see in the photo, didn’t have a suitcase with him, but he sure had what appeared to be three bags of groceries. Anyone who’s followed him wouldn’t be the least bit surprised. The idea of Adams bringing his own food to Orlando is humorous and believable, considering the fact that some photos of some less-than-appetizing looking food being provided to players within the bubble were sent around on social media on Monday. Perhaps Adams had someone help with his luggage. Or maybe he made two trips. It’s also possible that he stashed some clothes in his guitar case or in the backpack he’s wearing… But truth be told, if we were to find out that he traveled to Orlando with three pairs of shorts, six t-shirts and two pairs of flip flops, nobody that follows the Thunder would be surprised.

There won't be any outlandish suits or designer tracksuits in those bags, that's for sure. Probably a Chiefs jersey though.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The NBA's MVP race is over. So is the battle for every other individual regular-season trophy. The league told teams Friday that none of the seeding games will be taken into consideration for any postseason award, and that voting for those honors -- such as All-NBA, rookie of the year and defensive player of the year -- will be completed before the July 30 restart of the season at Walt Disney World. Typically, those votes are cast closer to the end of the regular season. So the postseason races are still going in many cases, but the individual award chases are now complete. "The decision to exclude seeding games from awards voting ensures a fair process in which players and coaches from all 30 teams will have the same opportunity to be honored as top performers for the regular season," the NBA wrote in a memo sent to teams Friday. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the memo. Only 22 of the league's 30 teams are participating in the NBA restart.

@Bovidae Greek Freak MVP then?
-
@ACT-Crusader Very likely.
Also from the ESPN article:
The league's decision -- it was not unexpected -- means that Milwaukee forward Giannis Antetokounmpo's campaign for back-to-back MVP awards technically ended more than four months ago when the season was suspended amid the coronavirus pandemic. Antetokounmpo won his first MVP award after averaging 27.7 points and 12.5 rebounds per game last season. This season, he's expected to be an MVP front-runner again with averages of 29.6 points and 13.7 rebounds for the Bucks -- who have the league's best record. The NBA's decision also means that New Orleans' Zion Williamson, who has appeared in only 19 games this season, won't get to make a late push to try to catch presumed top-rookie front-runner Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies.

No doubt.
My treble of Giannis, Ja and Luka (for MIP) is so close but I don't think Luka is going to get up.

Harrell or Lou Williams for 6th Man.

Not that I think he will get most improved, but Sabonis jump from last year to this has been a big reason why the Pacers might be a smokey for the playoffs.
From 14ppg, 9reb and 3 asst to 19 ppg, 12reb and 5

I love Sabonis.
I'm obviously biased, but I genuinely think Luka deserves this award. Going from 21.2, 7. 8 and 6.0 on 42. 7% shooting, to 28.7, 9.3 and 8.7 on 46. 1% shooting is a massive leap and so much harder to make than anything anyone else has done. He's just being penalised for being pretty awesome last year.

SGA has improved a lot this season as well. Never really given the MIP award much thought. JUst checked his stats
Clips 10.8 2.8 3.3
OKC 19.3 6.1 3.3 -

What are Pascal Siakam's stats vs last year??

Watched The Jump yesterday, says his improvement is off the charts, could easily be most improved for 2 years running

17 / 7 / 3 last season to 23.5 / 7.5 / 3.5.
So great improvement and the big thing had been the leadership improvement too.

Siakim has been great, though points production was always going to go up when Kawhi left. He's now taking 19 shots pg instead of 12 - at 46% shooting instead of 55%...
Its all Luka for me and none of you can convince me different!!!
-
So Siakam has taken a bigger leap in ppg, while the FG% can be explained by now being the go-to guy and getting defended harder so he's getting harder shots.
-
SGA has basically doubled points and rebounds. He’s a great foil for CP3.
Luka is on TD watch every night and at 29/9/9 is in the thick of the MVP conversation. Mavs are 40-27 and that’s with an up and down season from the unicorn. They have a few nice pieces but Luka has been phenomenal and stepped up big time.

@voodoo Doncic, in PPG percentage increase.
Not sure fga volume increase by % is relevant, lots of gumboots increase their attempts from 3fga to 6fga in any given season.
Siakim has increased ppg by 6.7ppg, Luka by 7.5ppg
The difference there is too small to quibble over, but I'd argue that it materially harder to take that leap to a level where you're avoiding 29ppg - and take that leap whilst increasing your shooting % (along with every other statistical category) is just insane.

Gotta love Steven from Rotorua

Nuggets with a starting 5 today that averaged 6 foot 10
Jokic played PG

Bol Bol a new NBA Hero. Judging by the media if Voting hadn't shut he would be in line for MVP.

They'd have no choice to play zone, they wouldn't be able to guard anyone man-on-man!
These scrimmages don't seem to be being taken too seriously.

The highlights were quite funny with am the newer lighter more nimble Jokic guarding smalls out on the perimeter.
Grant was doing okay out there.
The Clippers game yesterday was probably 70% pace competitive.
The Mavs/Lakers game today was basically a shoot out.

Suns beat the Jazz

As an OKC fan, it was absolutely awesome to see Andre Roberson make it back on to the court after a 30-month rehab AND immediately hit a corner 3.

Looks like Tom Thibodeau will be offered a 5 year deal to coach the Knicks
I hope he learned a little bit about dealing with millenials in his failed time in Minnesota

Nope. He's just a dick. But his players are. Or whatever term they call young 20 somethings these days

Shit, he's worse than a dick. What a job to take. Imagine taking a new job when the entire industry has branded your boss as a hopeless, narcissistic piston wristed gibbon!
I like Thibs though, hope it goes well for him

An interesting read about how Covid-19 has impacted the NBA team owners.

Has anyone posted on this thread re what a massive opportunity is being missed here as the NBA resumes in the Orlando bubble?
If the NBA had been drawn to NZ with games played at Spark, Horncastle and any other worthy arenas (could FBS be transformed for basketball??), would there be any local tip off times that would suit viewers in US time zones? Because for mine, that's the only reasonable obstacle to bringing the NBA to this country. Everything else can be worked around.
They're having issues with players leaving the Orlando bubble. Lou Williams is excused for a funeral and gets in trouble for grabbing a meal at an...ahem...strip club. And now there is talk of the 2020/21 season starting as soon as December and also having to begin in Orlando or possibly multiple bubbles, but there might be unrest depending on whether or not families can also be isolated with the players.
So bring the NBA to virtually Covid-free NZ. We can have crowds at games which boosts income. The costs to house players and their families would be less in USD due to the exchange rate. They would have freedom of movement. Have a window mid-season when players have the option to return to the US.
Also a massive opportunity to host rich US sports fans, after they comply with our rules of entry, should they so choose.
I don't believe for a moment that with our small population we'd sell out a lot of games across a full NBA schedule, but 1,000 per game has gotta be better than 0 per game, right?
I'm sure there are negatives I'm not thinking of but if the tip off time issue can be negotiated, there must be work-arounds which can be achieved.
-
OK, we could have a midday tip off which would be 8pm Eastern Daylight Time. Presumably that means anywhere from Boston to Miami? 2pm NZT would be 10pm. They're probably the best compromises for the marquee games to maximise US ratings.
4pm NZT is 9pm Pacific Daylight Time (Seattle to San Diego I guess). 6pm = 11pm.
So it's possible to play some games at times that would rate well or ok and at good times to attend locally.
Maybe some games tip off early and that's just an adjustment the players need to make, in order to suit US prime time slots. Compared to their crazy travel schedules which ordinarily include compulsory daytime naps, and flights into the early hours of the morning, this probably isn't too much of a chore.

@shark was just listening to thefull48 podcast and all three of them (Howard beck, Zach Lowe and Rachel Nichols) mentioned how some overseas players briefly discussed with the NBA about moving it to their country (didn't say it was Adams) they all said let's move it to NZ as they all wanted to go live there.
Nichols can stay at my mums place I will come back and visit (irrational crush on her...not super hot but I think sports knowledge pushes her up in my hotness).
