They're giving these awards away to as many Labourites as possible right now
Hager was actually Values (and I suspect close to some of the Greens)and one of his earliest books was on an alleged Labour govt coverup. I'd be surprised if they/ he considered him a Labourite (but then again I have not been following his recent career).

Greens new tax policy. That's a big no thanks from me. Just a typical money grab. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/wealth-tax-hikes-will-pay-for-income-tax-cuts-and-welfare-overhaul-greens/FCRYI5THFVECPNUS2IB2N7REWA/

I can’t believe Marama Davidson is posing for a photo with a white CIS male.

@taniwharugby Dunno.
If we are I don't think the blame can be laid on Labour.
Only three years ago we were collectively screaming LOOK AT US LOOK AT US, WE'VE BEATEN THE RONA. WE ARE GODS.
Then came a reality check.
We've always had a bipolar cultural cringe / lack of context / fawning attention seeking / triumphalism.
Greatest little country on earth, Godzone - why can't we be like...

Funny poll, though. If you say NZ is negative and whiny, aren't you being a whiny little shite? Whining about the whining.
Kind of think certain sections of the English-speaking world are in a kind of self-flagellation mindset at the moment. -

@canefan It's the age of outrage
@taniwharugby yeah but like I pointed out we weren't whining 3 years ago. We wuz world beaters....
Laborites (including in the media) were trumpting that to justify draconian policies, a different aspect IMO. It was cringeworthy then and even worse now.

@Tim Three criteria for stagflation
First two have been met
High inflation
Stalled growthThird hasn't
High unemploymentIn fact low unemployment has significantly contributed to the first two factors driving up costs and limiting capacity. Let's hope that growth in the job market eases inflationary pressures without sending unemployment up much.

The labour market is a curious one at the moment. There are anecdotal examples of it heading in all directions. But even as a lagging indicator, employment is not (yet...?) responding as it historically has to slowing growth.
I've heard it partly attributed to changed employer behaviour, given aging labour force demographics and employer memories of how hard it was to get skilled workers back after the layoffs around 2008/2009. But I suppose that may only last for so long in the face of reducing demand.

Stuff: Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon resigns over $2m conflict of interest
... “I have been considering the matter and taking further advice. My preliminary view was his actions were serious enough to warrant removal.”
“Had the process been completed it is probable I would have determined his actions represented a serious breach of the Crown Entities Act and I would have taken the next steps to recommend to the Governor-General to remove him from his office.
“It is critical that all people appointed to public roles comply with their statutory duties. Meng Foon had multiple opportunities to adequately declare these interests and did not do so.
“While he has now chosen to resign I think it’s important the public is aware of the circumstances in which he has made that decision,” Deborah Russell said.

@dogmeat sorry, I was was talking his main comment, as opposed to why we are there or who was to blame, certainly seems in the past decade or more NZ has tread that negative whiny needy validation path.
Luxon could be onto something. I can't comment too much having lived outside the place for decades with only occasional visits, but it seems to me maybe it's less of NZ going backwards, but falling behind other countries. My neighbour visited NZ a few months back after a 10 year gap and said something similar about mojo.
Little countries like Denmark with a well-educated population seem to be able to come up with home-grown innovative solutions to their problems which other countries really admire and copy. NZ used to be like that with things like ACC and some well-regarded criminal justice innovations
Nowadays it's easy to get the impression from afar that NZ just wants to be cool and progressive and not think too hard about actually sorting out stuff like putting a roof over it's citizens heads - despite plenty of land and building materials.
Just my impression from outside. Probably bollocks.
