the banks are not blameless here.
As rates plummetted a few years back, it generally took a few days for the decisions on mortgage rates to follow. And often the full cut wasn't passed on because reasons. Savings rates however were slashed instantly.
Now we are going up, and banks are falling over themselves to pass the full rate on as soon as the announcement is made. Are they also increasing the rates on your savings accounts? Are they fuck. That's not how you get your bonus bro.
CBA's 6-monthly profit announcement certainly isn't a great look
Was only $2.5B ? Pocket change...
that was for the quarter to 30 september...

while i continue on my rabid leftie rant about how people are kinda fucked.
while reading yet another story about rents getting jacked up i saw an interesting stat that i can't verify, but can easily believe given our local situation, and if true just rams home how fucked some people must feel
Current vacant rental supply in the entire country is 31,000 homes. There are approximately 2.9 million house holds renting at the moment. That's an extraordinarily low vacancy rate.
Cost of living outside of accommodation continues to rise despite a record escalation of interest rates. Interest rates rise, landlords jack the rent because their rental costs more AND the laws of supply and demand. And what can a renter do? Leave their rental? and go where?

Our resident Queenslanders and Australian brothers are today laughing at the little Cantab peasants who complained about their Government and the cost of their shiny new stadium.
In case you missed it, a $7bn agreement was reached today between the QLD State Gov and the Feds for about 50/50 spend on:
- a $2.7bn upgrade to the Gabba;
- A new $2.5bn 15,000 seat "arena; and
- $2.3bn for "various" other projects
How. The. Fuck. can it cost $2.7bn to UPGRADE a stadium??!!!!
FYI, the original upgrade was costed at $1bn in 2021....

Sweet, the Lions get a flash new home
And I assume the 2,000 bullets fans have somewhere nice to watch their team suck too
It really is amazing what money can be found aye

I get that 2023 isn’t 2019, and a stadium isn’t an arena, but Parra Stadium seats 30k and cost $300m
That’s some serious demo costs and inflation to get to 2.5bn for 17k

You're confusing two different things. The rebuild of the Gabba (50,000 seats) is not the new Arena over the railway station at Roma Street.

that's true but they're both stupidly expensive - the Gaba should not cost $2.7bn to knock down and rebuild and a new 17k arena sure as fck shouldn't cost $2.5bn

I don't disagree, but given the cost blowouts of any public infrastructure in Australia, perhaps these are the first to show their true cost?

I got your back…
I’ve belonged to 2 unions in my life, the CFMEU was hopefully the last . Bunch of crooks and bullies .
My favourite memory of them was the local union head forcing management to tell the boys to down tools for an emergency meeting. Then this clown explained to us the sharemarket was crashing and spent the next 45 minutes thrashwanking about the evils of capitalism and if it wasn’t for them our bosses would treat us like slaves . He went on and on until someone put up their hand and he said ,
“ do you have a question brother?”
“ yeah mate , you said the sharemarket has gone to shit. Is any of the CBUS money invested in it?
Awkward silenceMore awkward silence
Clears throat
“ um ..,,,, yeah some of it is ……”
Cue arrested development theme song .
I wouldn’t have joined but to force us into joining they kept shutting down the site for reasons like a toasted sandwich maker not having an electrical safety tag until we gave in and joined .
The next site I went to I asked the foreman what the situation was like with the CFMEU and he said they’d been pricks at the start of the job until the boss asked how much it would cost to keep them away and he got the $10000 they wanted and we never saw them again .But yeah they totally had our backs.

So now the terrible superannuation situation in Australia has gotten worse as the Treasurer, the entirely unqualified Jim Chalmers has identified an opportunity: To legislate that superannuation funds need to fulfil certain requirements; namely investing in the white elephant projects dreamed up by the government of the day.
Not specifying that funds needs to maximise returns for members, or that funds are for retirement. No, that wouldn't satisfy their penchant for public policy prescription. Namely that we should be a collective working to a grand design as determined by a political elite.
-
Now we've got further detail, the government wants to tax unrealised gains. That's the collective intellect of Labor; bereft of detail on a simple element of taxation policy, they're unable to explain how a paper gain in illiquid assets can be dealt with.
I'm pleased I didn't drink from the Kool-Aid and invested outside of super, even accounting for the tax benefits as they were at the time.
