A couple of interesting comments I've picked up today:
BBC Moscow correspondent says the mood in Moscow is very different and he's picking up on a lot more anti-Putin comments than ever before. Wonders if Putin has gone that one step too far.
Defence Sec Ben Wallace has said the UK was sponsoring Ukraine for NATO membership for 20 years "but some other nations didn't want them to come in"

Will Putin go full-Trudeau on his own people?

Does everyone here know who Barrie Cassidy is, BTW?
No idea. Who is he?
Yeah probably should have given that context.
Former Australian political journo - since the 70s. Worked on a few Federal campaigns (press secretary for Hawke's Labor govt in the 80s) and knows his way around the halls of power.
I'd say he knows more people on the ground in Ukraine right now than a few here - definitely more than me.
Critic of clickbait journalism, too. I thought that would line up nicely with a lot of people on here who decry the MSM
And I didn't take his tweet as saying nothing was happening - clearly Russia is being collectively dickheaded about this and has boots on the ground.. But the media are certainly on the hype train already.
What the hell would Barrie Cassidy know he is 30 years out of Canberra and the gallery?
If you think a former media adviser to the PM has any great insight the Sky News line up must really excite you with a former PM COS, Defence Minister COS and another Hawke media adviser back to back.
Also not an argument I've heard used for Alan Jones... "His comments seem batshit crazy, but he was Malcolm Fraser's speechwriter four decades ago so who am I to argue".

What? Arrest a few hundred blocking roads in trucks? A bit different from invading an entire sovereign nation, because you have changed the presidential rules to mean you can stay in power indefinitely

It was a joke.

@victor-meldrew sadly I think he has zero fucks to give when it comes to what his people think.

@taniwharugby I don't think he gives a fuck about the ordinary Russian citizen full stop.
That is why banning Russia from hosting or participating in sport could have an impact, as Putin does seem to care about Russia showing their strength on the world stage. Hopefully FIFA joins the party soon and kicks Russia out of the WC qualifiers, and further bans follow.

If you want your WW2 analogy, Crimea = Sudetenland, Ukraine (the Eastern part) = Western Czechoslovakia. After that we had puppet state in eastern Cz (Western Ukraine Inc Kiev) then the invasion of Poland, by Germany and Russia together. That made a mess
Stuff slow on the analogy uptake

They should be banned from all sporting comps effective immediately

Apparently Russia might be launching cyber attacks on the west as well. Why don't the CIA have an army of hackers fucking up Russian shit right now? The west have looked bloody toothless against the Russians for some time. They screw with America's election and what do they do? Nothing

They do, have done for ages.
They are the ones that released the virus that fucked up the Iranian centrifuge computer that was air gapped.
