Once you get past that he looks like a slob you see that he’s a fat slob.
Gets COVID, goes to hospital, recovers, in the process losing a shit load of weight.
Says he needed to and was most probably a factor in him getting COVID.
Studies coming out that obesity = fucked and he’s put all the lost weight back on and possibly more.
FFS
Has he put the weight back on? He still looks a lot thinner in the face to me.

Yeah, he has an appalling dress sense but wonder if that's part of his charm. Or a carefully made image.

I like the fact he's not a production-line robot politician. Reserving judgement on much else.

Fat-shamers have felt enabled by Covid, and it's hard to fight back
Zoe WilliamsI cannot stand the toxic atmosphere of glee around the link between coronavirus and obesity
Boris Johnson … ‘It’s all right for you thinnies.’
It is not news that there is a connection between Covid mortality rates and a country’s obesity level. It may have been confirmed for the first time last week by the World Obesity Forum, but this has been a word-of-mouth truism since the start. Someone always knew a man whose brother-in-law worked in intensive care and said only obese people suffered seriously. “I weigh myself every morning, to check that I am still just overweight,” said a friend with one of these brothers-in-law.
Then Boris Johnson set this in stone, whining to his cabinet: “It’s all right for you thinnies.” It is not a word, is it, “thinnie”? Nor is “gloomster”. Sometimes, I think that is the summit of the prime minister’s arrogance – that he finds the English language incomplete without the interjection of his baby words. At other times, I think his arrogance is more like the mountain in a Japanese etching: there is no “top”, there is only “more” and “cloud”.

What I cannot stand is the atmosphere of glee around the link to obesity; for a lot of people, the world makes sense again. It is not a tragedy, it is just those less important people. It is not the cruel and random hand of fate, it is a sound moral outcome – undisciplined people who had it coming got it. Obesity is the magic bullet: it conjures a fairytale world in which bad things happen only to bad people. The more negative outcome you can attach to overeating, the fairer you have made your tiny world.Fat-shaming never owns its agenda, it just raises its eyebrows and uses nebulous connectives such as “well”. It says: “Nobody has died in Vietnam” (cue more eyebrows, perhaps some meaningful nodding). It says, resignedly: “Well, we are an obese, ageing society,” using “society” as a fig leaf, to sound like “all of us”, when it really means “those people”.
And because it never speaks its name, the fat-hate, you can never argue against it. You sound crazy. Tilting at windmills. A dog trying to attack a fly through a window. Is it even a fly, or is it all in my head? No, I am pretty sure there is a noise – disapproval, snobbery, judgment, a constant, wordless buzz. I just haven’t figured out how to open the window.
Zoe Williams is a Guardian columnist
I'm sure a few people will wholly agree with this. But I am not one of them.
I wouldn't say I share glee, but I'm appreciative of Boris for highlighting this out, as I feel that news / coverage / commentary on obese people has simply not been for the greater good of the public. Reality is that if you are obese you are much likely to have both mental and physical health issues, suffer greatly from Covid, live a shorter life & ultimately end up as a tax payer drain. That's not me being heartless, that just facts and as Ben Shapiro rightly says, facts don't care about your feelings.
But yet, if you pick up a womans mag these days, your likely to see all sort of body beautiful, I'm fab the way I am crap by obese people. Everybody deserves to the right to be happy, confident and content with their lifestyles (which don't affect others) but I disagree that things which are blatantly unhealthy should be pushed in any way as being healthy. It's jut not true. You can't advertise cigarettes anymore, alcohol advertisments are strictly regulated for these reasons. Why is obesity & obesity causes given a free ride on this?
Sorry if this seems heartless, but I have a 44 year old close relative whose had large mental health issues & recently commenced the serious physical health issues due to her obesity. People don't find glee in being proven right on this - they were always right and everybody knew it. People find a sense a relief that perhaps finally, seriously fucking finally, people at the top level are acknowledging this and looking for ways to reduce the other pandemic going on
-
Excellent post, mate. Think you nailed the issue.
But I do wonder what the solution is, other than food rationing.

if that's losing 10kg he was lucky to live when he was 10kg heavier.

This 1 million %
Unfortunately when the decision makers and the health professionals are part pf the problem not the solution, I'm not overly optimistic that much will change.

Before and after. Def uber-porky when he got covid.

Anyway in positive news, kids back to school today, numbers the lowest the have been since September & vaccine roll out continues ...
Tough old slog in the UK continues, on what should have been a landmark day for the country, all everybody is talking about is those two now in California.

@tewaio how are you now? Recovered?
That's very kind of you to ask, thank you
I had about two days of the extreme fatigue and breathlessness, then steadily felt less and less tired for the remaining 6 days in isolation. All in all I stayed in a bedroom for 8 days. I was completely separated from wife and child, meals left outside the door etc. Both of them never got it (3x negative tests) which was great.
Since getting out last Friday I've struggled to work full days (from home) without needing a lie down. I went for a gentle walk on Sunday and my heart rate hit 170, which is a concern, normal max for me is 190. I was pretty fit going into this (I'm 33), but that doesn't seem to have helped much. I think I'll take an entire month off exercise, as I've read that's the best way to prevent long covid, although not much concrete is really known about it.

good to hear mate. Like most illnesses, you are best to listen to your body and avoid too much heavy exercise. Just concentrate on getting back to 100% as soon as you can

Good news, mate.
I can sympathise - had Post Viral Fatigue last year which the GP thinks was Long Covid. I was quite fit for my age before it struck (plenty of heavy gardening). Total flattened me. Like you I had to take it easy and not over-do it. And don't feel frustrated if it takes a while to go away - It doesn't last forever.

Good that on the mend. Some quirky data emerging that vaccination seems significantly to reduce Long Covid symptoms.

@tewaio Glad to hear you are feeling better fella, sounds nasty to get over. Very similar my wife having it (we think) last year, same sort of story, although she was down for the count for 4 days and then 2 -3 week recovery before back to her standard fitness of fuck all.
