Best Test XI - POLL - Batsmen
-
@mariner4life yeah different roles, but I reckon if you can bat high in the order then you can bat lower down. Not necessarily the other way around. It's not like you are coming in at exactly the same time and circumstances each innings. Except for openers, but I always found them a bit weird. Like accountants.

you are going to need more than that to make this team these days (thanks to our current XI)
last shot is totally justified too

I thought we were picking a team. My bad.
I actually thought that we weren't. That was kinda the rules. Might be in the "general" thread.
Balance, captaincy, all rounders, weren't supposed to enter into it. It was pure individual skill. Our eleven best players in their specialist positions.
Didn't see those rules, but I thought it was frowned upon in these parts if we read the whole thread.

We do have some strong traditions and they really shouldn't be broken. That is my bad.

We’re gonna have to bend the rules. Taylor and Crowe both walk in but either one of them bats five or we pick Fleming, Astle, McMillan or Coney.

Now my head is going to explode. We are bending some rules but not others, but we won't know which rules are allowed to be bent until we try to bend one. Then it's wait to see if we get shot down for bending the rules.

That’s my point. Crowe and Taylor both batted at four for the vast majority of their careers. So by default one has to bat five in this team cos fuck NOT picking one of them for another of the other guys mentioned....
-
@Crazy-Horse bend the rules all you want, but there is no amount of bending that gets Fleming in the side.

I shouldn't have said "specialist" positions in that (other than openers) they are batsmen and can play anywhere in the order. Taylor and Crowe both get in.
I thought that we had - openers, batsmen, keeper, bowlers. The best in those categories. Not keeper / batsmen, etc.
This is like rugby - the rules seem to be open to "interpretation". The ref @Gunner might need to intervene before a fight breaks out.

@MN5 i so dearly want to not pick Taylor for all the times he has disappointed me over the years.
He walks in and you know it.
I’m fucked off at Brian Lara for getting dismissed for fuck all as a mate and I were driving to the Basin specifically to watch him bat but that doesn’t mean he’s not a legend.

i know he walks in.
but i have seared in to my memory him walking off far too many times in white looking dejectedly at the bottom of his bat as he holes out to deep midwicket AGAIN

Both Marty and Rossco have very ordinary records batting at 5.
BMac however is exceptional there!

I feel the same way about John Parker.
In fact, fuck him!

I get annoyed at his tongue hanging out, the occasional ugly slog sweep and his sometimes utterly horrific running between the wickets.

And that Cape Town test post Tangiwai with the bandaged head.
That was Bert Sutcliffe.
Aah.
Well how about him too?
