@booboo shit really? I hadn't heard that
was blindly hoping the record rain we had last weekend would help dampen things for a while...at least we're all use to wearing masks....hahahah..
I was just about to post the same thing, how the fck didn't I know about this??!!
"Thanks" for sharing @booboo

We haven't had decent rain for a while. Not really since March. Not that you'd expect it over winter here. Spring/early summer seems to be our long hot dry period.
Being promised a La Ninã but not here yet. Will no doubt arrive just in time for Christmas.

And a lot of rain in winter = more growth to burn in summer, so....

Disaster guy at Council has sent around an update (being on Secondment here I get them too). Won't reproduce in full, but in summary:
Have hit 50% of island. Turning to shit Saturday night with northerly change which is going to fuck everything over.
Kingfisher Bay and Happy Valley resorts preparing to evacuate.
Fire not going to be put out without significant rain so they're trying to divert it around communities. Smoke we're getting is from backburning.
-
Panoramic photo from this morning sitting at the western end of town looking west to east across the Bay.
Smoke haze hanging across the island (starting way way up beyond left of picture past the tree), few plumes of smoke as you work north/left to south/right then big plumes where fire is burning on two fronts.
Wind northerly so smoke heading towards Sunny Coast and Brissy.
Photo doesn't do it justice.
-
@NTA not happening. Stinky hot today and blustery northerlies. No rain forecast till maybe some thunderstorms Tuesday.
May be too little too late.
Kingfisher Bay looking to be in the gun.
Real shame if it goes. Beautiful spot really nicely integrated into the bush, lovely use of local timber. Just has a nice relaxing feel about it.

Just some rain will do.
Climate change notwithstanding, snow does seem unlikely for you.
The island still on fire?
Yep. Bit hard to work out exactly where the front(s) is(are) but it's bearing down on the major resort.
Will not be good for Hervey Bay/Fraser Coast if we lose that.
Apparently getting a little political about how they've been allowed to fight the fire (I.e., retardants and not being fussed about it for some time after it started).
-
Photo from yesterday morning.
Again resolution doesn't do it justice (straight from phone cropped down).
Looks like two fronts going gangbusters.
Kingfisher Bay appears to have been reprieved thus far, but Happy Valley on the eastern coast has been evacuated, issued with a "leave now" and basically told head out onto the beach.
Warm day (33 deg) and strong northerlies.
Some precipitation possible Tuesday still. But may amount to nothing.

Warning as at 3.45am
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) advises there is a bushfire approaching Happy Valley. Leaving immediately is the safest option, as it will soon be too dangerous to drive. Any persons in the vicinity of Happy Valley township should leave the area heading to the Eastern Beach and head south to Eurong Resort.
Follow your bushfire survival plan now. If you do not have a plan, your safest option is to leave immediately if it is clear to do so. If you cannot leave, identify where you will seek shelter from the bushfire. If you are not in the area, do not return, as conditions are too dangerous.
Currently as at 3.30am Monday 7 December, a large fire is travelling in a south easterly direction towards Happy Valley township on Fraser Island. It is expected to impact Happy Valley township around 7am. The fire is expected to have a significant IMPACT on the community.
Conditions are now very dangerous and firefighters may soon be unable to prevent the fire advancing. The fire may pose a threat to all lives directly in its path. Fire crews may not be able to protect your property. You should not expect a firefighter at your door: act now.
Power, water, and mobile phone service may be lost and road conditions may become very dangerous over the next several hours.

What sort of population are we talking in this area?

Not huge number of permanent residents. They're more resorts.
A lot of privately owned villas/apartments that some people live in, or use as holiday homes or allow the resort to let to holiday makers (or all if the above).
Obviously there's staff as well.
Major concern for the tourism industry if these places burn.
Also of major concern ecologically is if the fire gets into stands of unique rain forest as opposee to rhe eucalypt as that wont grow back.

That's what happened in parts of northern NSW - temperate rainforest got hit i.e. the shit that is usually too wet to burn.
The increasingly dry conditions are going to start changing ecologies all over. This is the tip of the spear.
