@Nepia I did qualify a couple of selections, he was there on potential, Whitcombe only played 20 times for us, Stan Wright only stepped up after he left here...I'd probably have Maxwell at 6 instead of at lock, Jones and Maxwell locking, way too lightweight.
Bryce Williams is another to consider at lock, he went close to NZ A
Sheesh, I'd forgotten about Williams. Surely if you have Taylor at 6 it wouldn't matter having the relatively lightweight locks?

@taniwharugby said in Ultimate NPC: - Northland:
@Nepia Jones and Maxwell wouldnt be relative lightweight, they would be lightweight, be easier to have Taylor at lock and move Maxwell or Williams.
Oh you mean pushing in the scrums? I was just meaning if you have all three on the field they'll do the job and Taylor at 6 helps balance that lightweightness out.

Yeah I just went for Taylor at six because that's where he made the AB's. The best locking combo is Jones/Taylor
If Maxwell isn't in the best two locks then you could argue he misses out to Robinson

Maxwell is easily in the best two locks (without weight qualifiers).

yeah Jones is an auto selection, but I think if you were wanting a player to play today, he wouldnt be it (size, way he played, lifting v jumping) Maxwell (very much how Robinson plays with total disregard for his own body) or Williams to line up alongside Taylor...but then it comes back to comparing players form different eras

@taniwharugby thought about putting him at fullback, pretty sure he played the odd game there. But then I couldn't go past 'The Boot'.
It's a 22 man game these days anyway
-
@JC yeah as I said, Wright made my team based on his post-Northland performances, Whitcombe largely too, so sliding them out wont be an issue for my team.
@Gunner Berryman played 13 too, so shuffle Goodhue in, but then it was his combo with Jason Hita that made it work there, the WAATZ brothers I think they were?
-
@taniwharugby Joe Morgan stays ahead of Berryman for me. I didn't see him play, so that is based on being the highest capped Taniwha (I think), and also more games in black.

@Gunner imagine a back 3 with Ranger, Caucau and Berryman! Be entertaining, likely more good than bad!
True. Well worth the price $20 terrace ticket.

Also both of the Dunn brothers were fine players in their day but I think you're stretching it to suggest they're both good enough to block Holwell right out of the squad
Both All Blacks...
True, but if they had been playing in Mehrts's then Dan Carter's era they probably wouldn't have been, which was Holwell's curse.
-
is tough when you have some players you are basing your veiw on what you have read or what other people who saw them play said.
Johnny SMith a prime example (I admit I knew little about him, other than he played for North Auckland and AB's)
Named in Wynne Grays 100 Greatest ABs...
