@Victor-Meldrew Taiwan had 24 cases yesterday. South Korea still under 100.
Those numbers are insignificant compared to Europe which is clearly the current epicentre.
Lots of small waves that your health system can cope with is probably the best case scenario.
Really hope you are right.

No surprise he's staying away from crowds - he's in the demographic at risk. Spring Breakers should just stay away from their grandparents.

@pakman Unfortunately clinical trials performed in China are considered unreliable.
Doctors in Japan are using the same drug in clinical studies on coronavirus patients with mild to moderate symptoms, hoping it will prevent the virus from multiplying in patients.
But a Japanese health ministry source suggested the drug was not as effective in people with more severe symptoms. “We’ve given Avigan to 70 to 80 people, but it doesn’t seem to work that well when the virus has already multiplied,” the source told the Mainichi Shimbun.

Appears to be a few anomalies in the data. Germany have 12,327 cases and 28 deaths, Spain have 14,769 cases and 638 deaths. I can only assume that Germany/Korea with mass testing are identifying way more mild cases therefore the death rate is substantially lower.
I also wonder if this has something to do with how you determine cause of death.
Here in Australia they have described a few people dying 'with coronavirus' rather than 'of coronavirus'. Those cases were 90+ year olds who may have already been sick, so it's a bit hard to tell exactly what caused their death.
So if you took a more cautious approach to recording virus deaths in the very elderly, you could come away with a lower figure.

Perhaps take this with a rather large grain of salt.

I misread that article. Staff being stood down which isn't as bad as rissoled
Report on ABC News 24 that there is some talk of redeploying staff to Woolworths to assist in restocking.
Redeploying QANTAS Staff to Woolworths? Really?
That's quite funny.
Jim the Accountant, you're in baked goods. Cherie from HR, your in Produce! Get to it

Honestly that sounds sensible. I think maybe a volunteer program could be good for folk who are laid off. I didn't make it to my local this morning to view the crowds but it is only a matter of time before there will be riots if the supplies don't get in. There are a lot of people out there willing to serve their country or community and its hardly joining the military...could even pay them in toilet paper.

@Hooroo hey just reporting what said on tv ...
And it's not all that daft to redeploy the logistics staff to do logistics type stuff, ie., people who load stuff on and off things to load stuff on and off things. Biggest problem I believe is getting the stock to the shops.
I did also see that Coles were looking for 5,000 extra staff.

I doubt more supermarket staff will assist much. In NZ we are lucky in that we still run warehouse distribution systems with lots of stock. I'm sure NTA could enlighten us about Aus but in the UK the distribution is pretty much in/sort/out with manufacturers producing to order and in turn getting their raw ingredients the same way. Once the supplies are stripped at the shop the whole system has to catch up somehow.

The supermarkets have done a fair bit of PR in the last 24-48 hours demonstrating just how much stock they have.
The Federal Primary Industries Minister said we have enough food here to feed a population of 75 million.
It makes the supermarket mayhem all the more bewildering, really.

@barbarian yea they been saying here the usual backpacker jobs are no longer being filled

Woolworths have explained they're doing Xmas levels of trade which normally takes them five months to build up for. There's simply no way they can quickly scale to combat the absurd hoarding all these morons are doing.
