Not looking too good for Twitter, sucks for the people being laid off but the management seem to be piston wristed gibbons.

I don't know what twitter is supposed to do about "harassment" other than provide better tools for blocking people. There is awful stuff, but a lot of what is complained about is people simply disagreeing with others. See Stephen Jones and his frequently private feed, or genuinely insane people like Sady Doyle who try to get their political foes fired from their jobs for "harassment".
From what I have read, they have far too many employees for their size, so there should be a lot of lay-offs over the next 12 months.
Twitter is very entertaining, if you don't expect anything deep or meaningful from it. I don't see it having much more to offer in the future. People seem to want it to go towards a Facebook, real-names only, longer posts future. Then they would be crushed by Facebook, and become very dull.

I came to the conclusion about 3 years ago that twitter is just plain awful and binned it. It's basically a platform for self-righteous piston wristed gibbons to crap on about views they would never disclose face to face, and to attack others from a perceived position of security. I can see why it's taken off, but it's just not good.
Kind of like an internet chat forum. But without moderators.

I'm shocked. I just read a rivetting blog Frank posted saying Twitter is the future... now I don't know what to think.
This season on Silicon Valley the opening credits showed the twitter sign with people leaping off with golden parachutes opening as they sailed off. If you haven't watch SV yet give it a whirl its fucking awesome.
Twitter is one of those things (like instagram) people will look back on & go "hang on, I actually wasted my time reading what some fucking idiot had for breakfast? No wonder I am living on fucking welfare"

That's old twitter, before people worked out how to use it. Now it's good jokes, sick burns, and interesting news from people in your niche. 99% of it is shit, of course.

I'm on Twitter now (recent), but purely passively, I follow a dozen comedians & a couple of other famous randoms. Agree they are great. What I don't get is who follows the "normals" who tweet? No one. No one fucking does. Hence it failing horribly. That 99% can't be carried (moneywise) by the 1%. And they (the 99%) are still tweeting their fucking breakfast.
Number of people I know who have gone "dude! follow me on twitter!" & then been offended when I go "so I can hear that you are shocked that David Bowie died or that you had a wicked Bulletproof for elevensies? fuck off you tedious C, I'm bored talking to you 3 minutes a day in the lift, I don't need your vapid thoughts 24/7 on my fucking phone, show me ONE original tweet you've done in the last month that doesn't make me want to punch you in the ballsack"

Yeah I should caveat that I only follow people/things of interest, and not a single person I have on other social media, and don't even bother using my real name. I don't tweet at all. For me it's not really social media, its a media-filtering device. But it is excellent at that. And nowhere else is as up-to-date and "live" as Twitter.

Everyone should follow Nick Mullen (formally known as Nicole Mullen when trolling Thought Catalogue) and listen to the Cum Town podcast.
Cumtown is fucking great.

You never said that, it's way more than 140 characters. #fabrication

I like to insult in person, I'm not going to tweet that at someone where I can't see their horrified outrage or feel the discomfort of the other people in the lift / gym / tube

As an author I have to have Twitter, but my relationship with it is quite love/hate. Sometimes I come across really clever jokes or pics or interesting industry articles, and online support from other authors around the globe is pretty strong. The downside is the mobs. Sometimes the mob does great work and outs a truly awful person. But more often than not, some dipshit gets the complete wrong end of the stick and starts a war that a whole lot of other dipshits join in on, they casually destroy some poor person, then move on without a backward glance. And that is sickening. Twitter is rubbish for addressing death/rape/GBH threats - I have seen tweets that literally say 'I'm going to come to your house and shoot you in the head' or 'die bitch you should be fucking gang raped' and Twitter's response to the complaint is 'does not meet our threshold for harassment'. The ability for people to be anonymous and unaccountable for their actions is a bad combination.

There is plenty that Twitter could do technically to reduce harassment and bot accounts, but their success is measured by growth in user numbers.
So they are happy with stalkers creating multiple accounts and the bot accounts that make up over half of famous people's inflated follower accounts.
Helps the stock price.
Their staff are awful people as well, let their bias dictact how they handle certain people. Lots deserve to lose their job.
Compare with Instagram handling their issue the other day, rolled out a new blocking tool in one day. One!

This. They choose not to do anything about it for the most part , fuck them.

Twitter is good for immediacy. I like how it filters shit down to 140 characters so you kind of have to get to the point (yes, sometimes I struggle).
It helps quick contact, where you want to link something. Its poor for delivering buckets of content. More of a linking engine for me.
The problem is, that's ALL it is. Where can it go? How can it grow? Adding GIFs was fun. OK. But the whole point was it basically solved the quick-contact thing straight away.
In the world of Web2.0-API-agile-rapid-change you don't get to deliver a product that says what it does and never changes. You need to change to get attention.
I don't see any point to Instagram, because I'm not a 20yo bikini model trying to build a brand, and am easily confused by photo filters.
