World Rugby confirms changes to be implemented across the global game

@antipodean ha I've always been pissed at that, the guy wearing 9 is protected, but anyone else steps in the pass the ball is free game.
Given I played half my rugby at 9 and had a slow clearance, it pisses me off more I didn't have such protection š
I see on SM people still think teams will be willing to take out a player and be down to 14 for 20 mins...guess it has happened numerous times in super rugby since being in play.

Saw this and thought I'd see what this group think.
World Rugby confirms the 20-min red card will be implemented across the global game, as well as 7 other changes coming:
ā±ļø60 conversion shot-clock
ā±ļø 30-second scrum and lineout limit, managed by the referee
šŖ Marking inside the 22m line from a restart
š Single-stop mauls: The ball must be played after one stoppage in a maul
š Play-on un-straight line outs when uncontested
š Protection of the scrum-half at scrums, rucks and mauls.
šŗ Television Match Official (TMO) protocol, empowering officials to spot clear infringements in the final phases before scoring.
š„ A red-carded player can be replaced with another player after 20 minutesSubject to approval, World Rugby will work to finalise the timeline and processes for adoption at a global level from 1 January.
Shot clock, meh, who cares
Scrum and lineout limit should already be enforced anyway but isn't.
Marking from a kickoff is dumb.
Single stop mauls will be managed as well as two stop.
Unstraight lineouts is dumb.
Scrum half protection is dumb
Tmo should already be in play.
Red card is great.Summary... slow hand clap.

Red card ain't great imo. As if you get a red card you should be off. E.g. Eye gouge, your team should suffer. The problem isn't red card and you're gone, the problem is what now gets you red carded, poor technique or accidental stuff. Need orange card for the 20 mins off for bullshit, ineffective at the task causes of head injury 'were trying to stave of class action lawsuit' penalties.

Yes.
But, watch the WRU fuck up something simple again.

Fuck all to do with us

@MiketheSnow Sorry about that.
Neil Barnes launched a critique of the NZRFU today as well.
My error is possibly down to beer though!

WR have to do something to improve the watchability of the product.
Like, SA is the winningest team right now, but for me, totally unwatchable . . . if the score is close it gets a bit exciting.
But f'n about at scrum time to have a rest, playing to get opposition players yellow carded, and not playing rugby at all when they've got themselves ahead on the scoreboard.
What a bunt of a way to play . . . makes the ad breaks enjoyable (and i hate ads with a passion!)As for red cards, 20 minnutes is better, but i'd still replace the ejected player straight away!
Deal with the miscreant later.
I actually want more red cards, they'd clean up the game real quick then. So long as they keep the teams even. And if you are concerned about someone getting taken out in a premeditated/targeted manner.
You'd want to be real careful with that, that wouldn't be a rugby matter, that would be a police matter.
Taking out an NFL QB (say Mahomes) would be an obvious move if you are thinking like that, but it doesn't happen.
You'd never hear the end of it if it did..As for the TMO, I notice the NFL this season allow their TMOs to step in straight away if there is an obvious error, they just tell the ref to change his decision. No discussion, they just do it. NFL refs seldom look at a TV monitor now.
As for crooked lineouts, who cares really, i've never seen a halfback put the ball into a scrum straight ever!
And you're caring 'bout not straight lineouts . . .And the rolling maul! That's offside/obstruction every time, the whole play should have been outlawed years ago!
You can't join the maul from an offside position, but if you are already offside that's ok . . . really! And always wondered whether you could flank a ruck like at a scrum, so you could get to the half quicker. Clear now that you cant.

Red for heads was an attempt to change behaviour, and it worked (for most teams)
The issue for me was consistency. If every head contact got a red card, happy days - but you wind up wiht the Cane (red) and Kolisi (not red). Or SBW (red) and Marler (not red). And then the head contacts near the ground where the tackler is crouched/bent and the runner comes down into them. Edit: and 'soaking tackles' that break cheekbones (not red).
It's fraught, and there are a shedload more red cards. This will drive the behaviour but not wreck games the same way. I'm all for it.

Inconsistency from the refs, and failure of WR to set good guidelines is the big problem

That's why I like the Orange card Any head contact = 10 or 20 min orange card with replacement after. Red is permanent and for the dirty stuff it used to be (rare). Yellow for the things it used to be outside of head contact. No ifs buts or maybes hit the head = orange

Not enough of a disincentive to make people tackle lower IMO, thought the way it was refereed in the NH before the World Cup last year was fine, consistency, protocols to allow mitigation, refs supported, players understood it. If Super rugby had done the same we wouldnāt have got into the shit we did at the World Cup.
-
Haaaaated all the RCs at the RWC. Changes look ok to me. Definitely will favour NZ compared to some of the other sides. Irish wonāt be pleased.
-
NB I donāt think these are confirmed. Out for discussion.

The World Rugby Board has endorsed them next step moving to a global trial next season.

How is being ejected from the game not enough of a disincentive, and what would you change if you were in charge?
For individual players, it's the exact same disincentive as with the old red cards. I don't really think players are thinking, 'Well, even if I get sent off for the match and banned for three games, my team will still have someone back on the field after 20 minutes so I'm not going to bother trying to tackle lower'.
-
Itās not enough of an incentive for coaches to teach players to tackle lower - that means less time spent on it in practice. Saw a stat that suggested South Africa hit way lower than the other three teams in the RC - thatās not an accident, theyāve also had way fewer cards - they have the most scientific coaching team.
What I would do is enforce the current laws properly in the SH and tell the whinging prick commentators to shut up about it, head shots are fucking dangerous to players future lives. Thatās the reason it was brought in in the first place.
