I remember thinking at the time that Justin marshall hung around longer than he should have, was playing past him prime….but can’t think of too many people since…until the last few years
Marshall is a very good example of what this coaching group should be doing with some of the experienced guys.
In 2004, The Cartel went to Europe without all the old stagers like Marshall, Mehrts and Carlos - basically because they wanted the younger guys, the starts of the future to step out of their shadows and also to allow them to develop their own new high performance culture and move away from a culture that was not delivering results (and in some respects had become a bit toxic - see the binge drinking session after the 2004 humiliation by the Boks).
That’s probably what is needed now, and we can’t do that if we are selecting guys on the basis that they are there to share their experience of this stale and increasingly unsuccessful culture.
That was largely to get rid of the negative drinking culture that existed within the team and saw the All Blacks take a massive step towards professionalism. You could argue they've gone too far the other way now (not enough individualism) but it wasn't like they were just looking to give more opportunities to younger players, they were looking to flush out some bad eggs and put them on notice, which is quite different to the current situation.

That's because they had blokes like DC, McGOAT, Weepu coming through. Two if which we new back then would go on to greatness.

For right or for wrong, they view Sotutu as a bit of a sulker- a flat track bully.
During the selection process, Robertson sat down with players and pored over match footage, while ahead of the squad naming, assistant coach Jason Ryan made it clear the selectors would be analysing players’ body language when the going got tough.
“We believe Wallace is an incredible young talent, the harder the game, the higher he rose in regards to his performance,” Robertson said.
Your first sentence seems to be the direct opposite to what Roberston said, and it also seems to suggest that body language is bullshit.
Apparently as the game gets harder (got tougher) his performance rises, but that doesn't count because his body language didn't match what Tubby wanted.

And we have Roigard and Sititi who we know will go onto greatness.
Mind you, Roigard and Sititi aren't Cantabs are they?

I read that article and the criteria could be any one of the following
A. Why Razor selects players (?)
B both sides of the ball
C is a test player (?)
D is physical
E leads stats
F good body language when going gets tough
Also it is clear that several people select.... Maybe I missed some as well but nowhere could the inevitable conclusion be that Sotutu sulks AND is a flat track bully.
My point was that AB loosies played the most test style rugby (I think I was right to say Darry deserved an AB chance) and Sotutu also deserved his chance and seems to have worked on whatever he had been told to work on before so thanks Crusaders supporters for continually having to bring this up again..
Anyway what is done is done, can we now move forwards? -

Have a horrible feeling (just based on how conservatve Rzor has been) that Blackadder might start ahead of Sititi in big games and that TJP gets one of the halfback spots.
That's a certanty that 'experience' starts for the big matches, it is the most important thing Razor has learnt - according to him. Experience at being average is better than not much experience of being great

and yet, the experienced ginger Christie gets shitcanned. Arguably the best defence of the 9 group.
The selections seem a bit random to me, I struggle to see the thinking

week to week team make up is going to be very interesting.
This season so far has been a small number of games spread over a long period of time. It has allowed the coaching team to name essentially the same side every test without ever having to worry about fatigue.
Now we are heading in to 5 games in 5 weeks, which includes a cluster of the the 3 hardest games in 3 weeks.
Ryan has some experience of this having been through one Northern tour and a World Cup already. Thought that 2022 tour was only 4 games, and much easier opposition. But Robertson is learning.
How does he adjust his thinking? Can he really have Savea play 80 minutes at #8 three weeks in a row? Can he have DMac touching and running the ball 80 times three weeks in a row? How does he balance his back up 10 also being his (thus far) first choice 15? Something has to give somewhere.

Better defender than Roigard and Ratima?
I'll give you he is an experienced ginger! -

Given Sititi was also pretty good IMO in the lineouts and seems a more dominant tackler (again IMO) I'm not sure what the perpetually injured Blackadder offers over him..

The southern hemisphere test season is like that every year and it's bizarre because Super Rugby goes for a couple months and is basically over before it's started, it's not we're doing a 28-round club season like France and heading straight into internationals, no we have guys getting paid for spending whole weeks often two at their family homes in middle of the rugby championship and also after the June series, it wouldn't look stupid if NPC started in July after SR finals finish, then some AB squad members could be dropped in and out for continuity and keeping game sharp.

Some here said that 7 was his better position?

Not sure about that, snails are pretty tough, esp the sea ones...

The Opta stats I've seen suggest Ethan is one of the more accurate and dominant tacklers in the Crusaders.
Of course, given where they finished on the table, that might not be the glowing endorsement it may appear.

His best position at international level is at 7, especially when played alongside Ardie (who despite the pages of protestations on here) is going to be picked at 8.
With Ardie out there, our 7s play a very different game - they are there to clean and tackle, so Paps, Jacobson, and Blackadder seem the most ready-made to replace Cane.
Personally, I'd pick Papalii but Jacobson and Blackadder are probably the closest to Cane.
