Patel and Santner need a rocket.
Unless Patel was horrid, that is tough on him. He has a 10fer, and picked up 8 or 9 wickets in the last test. He's doing his bit!
Yeah fair call, I just gave myself an uppercut, ridiculous of me to expect sustained amazingness in every test !
Santner though…..

@nzzp I'm sticking with my prescription that Henry and Sears should have come in and Southee and Santner should have gone out.
Devon is on thin ice.
We've got to play spin options and Ajaz is probably the best we have. It's a pity he's not six inches taller.

Just a really disappointing but somewhat predictable performance after the disappointing selections. The Black Caps really need a shake up, we still have the talent but we're under performing.

I think yuo're half right. Yest to exitting both of Southee and Santner, but I'd pick Henry and Sodhi (or AN Other spinner). Pace won't get us wickets on these pitches.

Does O’Rourke mean nothing to you ?

yes, arguably more bounce.
But Southee and Henry aren't WOR. And the effectiveness drops as the test goes on. So yeah, love WOR (hunh, what is it good for) ... but would still go spin heavy.

There is no point playing spinners that are not good enough. Yes the conditions suit spin, but on the flipside the Sri Lankans are used to playing in these conditions against spin, so the spinner actually has to be good to have success.
-
@No-Quarter That's what I think too.
WOR's success encourages me to play more pace - especially vs SL (or Bangladesh).
We would still be playing with Ajaz, Phillips and Ravindra.

Coulda done with being sent to numerous past coaches too.

It's a while since I've thought about the next Test keeper in line. But Blundell's batting and keeping aren't brilliant these days...
After a promising start he hasn't kicked on to become BJW 2.0 as we'd hoped
I reckon that is a bit harsh. An average of 36 (with no particular preference to easy opposition) is pretty close to Watling offered. Watling favoured by his longevity, but I think there was probably a considerable crossover after Blundell debuted when he could have capably played test cricket, we just didn't need him.
