RWC Final: All Blacks v Springboks
-
The TMO ended up being the most influential person on the pitch.
Unfortunately our poor discipline cost us in the big show, I've never seen an AB team struggle as much to keep 15 players on the field for 80 minutes like this current team does. Yes the rules have changed but we are the worst/most carded professional team in the top ranks.
Despite everything we had 2 chances to win and didn't take either. Feel sorry for RM and JB who will probably be replaying those kicks in their minds for a long, long time to come.
While it was a brave effort it was self inflicted adversity that cost us.
Kinda sums up Fozzies reign nicely, played stupidly, almost had enough talent to pull it off, created enough changes to win and didn't take them.
So close...

Jordan wasn't having the best game, but how stupid was it to replace one of your weapons with ALB in a game that we were chasing. That was such a silly call imo.
No it wasn't, Jordan was mentally done. He should have been replaced earlier.

Yeah he looked about as far from the cool, calm collected fella he usually does as I’ve ever seen.

But not with ALB. ALB is hardly a match winner who can break open a game. I have seen Jordan been flat before and suddenly turn it on in an instant. That game in Wellington last year against Ireland is an example of that.

As a neutral I thought it was a great game. Very absorbing contest.
All the 'RIP rugby' takes on this thread have me somewhat bemused. I'm no fan of the cards and the TMO but ultimately the game flowed pretty well and if you haven't made your peace with the high contact rules now then you never will.
I thought Wayne Barnes had a good game, especially in the last 20. He understood the stakes, let the players decide the game without it descending into a free-for-all. Of course you can always screenshot incident X or play Y, and if you're looking for perfection you are going to be disappointed.
But in a tight, physical game with each side throwing haymakers I thought he got a lot more right than he did wrong, and he allowed the game to flow really well with clear communication.

The call to go for the corner, rather than the posts, came from foster, it was mentioned in the comms
Terrible coaching
Foster's going to Fozie bear. Quite appropriate result when you look at it this way

Is this in the 2nd half? I was more annoyed when they turned down the 3 in the first half and went for the lineout, and then Cane gets red carded in the next play. Down by 6 points on a wet day and they ignore the 3.

yep in reflection, i think this sums it up. I actually think the coaches and the team was good enough to win the final so well done to them for achieving that.
Did we execute all our chances on the big stage, no.
We can continue to complain about certain things that always happen in tight games, who gets pinged for what and why? but it doesn't change the outcome. The guys on the field could have only done that and had chances to do so. RM and JB especially as you say.
In contact sport and ever changing rules and interpretations, you have to adjust and I still don't think we have done that well done enough as others have as well and that is something that the coaching staff have to take on themselves as well.
To be clear though, I think that team was still good enough to beat the boks even with 14. We didn't take our chances and the better team led by a one man machine in Pieter-Steph du Toit held on.

WRT Barnes admitting fault, I found this take from the North Harbour refs coordinator interesting:
I fail to understand how it helps retain credibility? Changing the decision would have helped retain credibility. Edit: Wrote this when I could only see the bottom tweet and not the top tweet.

Now World Rugby reviewing whether or not Kolisi yellow updated to red. If so, match replayed.
Hang on, you are joking, right?

Cane said he was surprised the Bok moved/swerved back into him. I'd agree but still a clumsy tackle.
A sudden dip and late change of direction?
I don't think he mentined dip but he did say turn back into him, which would have cut down his time to tackle lower...
-
@nostrildamus Gotcha. Was winding up Boks with that one!

Yep some AB heads weren't in the right space. Lack of composure and discipline, overly flash backline moves in the rain, chaotic TMO decisions. Hope everyone has seen the last collapsed scrum on X, SB has a good view. Barnes looked stressed in the end and who can blame him.
Even if we had sneeked the game with a goal kick I still wouldn't have been overly happy as it was a chaotic mess and a poor advert for rugby.
Overall SA deserved to win the melee. -

That first half one, called by cane under instructions from coach

Is this a wee troll? What are these rules exactly because they change or are interpreted completely differently almost every single game. Same for what the TMO bothers to look at and same for what the ref bothers to reverse if he happens to see it on the big screen. It's an absolute dogs breakfast, and you're kidding yourself if you claim otherwise.

I'm not sure if the going for the corner over going from a penalty is the slam dunk three points eveyone is suggesting it is. IIRC it was from a wide angle nearly 50 metres out. It was a 50/50 kick at best with our kickers.
Plus, how often in the RWC did our lineout fail? Barely ever until the final. Our chances of not securing that lineout were 90/10, unfortunately for us it was the 10 this time.
I don't think it was as bad a decision as everyone is making out.

I thought this was quite a cool pic
That happened right in front of me. DDA broke off victory lap and walked 5m over to do that. Class.
That is so cool and one reason attending live just can’t be beat.
