You obviously haven't been watching the Canes to make a statement like that. Yes Cane is the incumbent but Ardie is currently playing better. Like Ian Jones said on the Breakdown this week Ardie has the ability to take the All Black number 7 jersey to a whole new level. He just offers alot more than Cane and it wouldn't suprise me if he surpasses him in a few years.

hang on.... you seem yo be contradicting yourself. In your first post you said this match would be a 'strong indication on who actually is the supreme open-side atm' .... now you are saying that he might surpass him in a few years. Which is just speculation,. but nothing wrong with that. Very different to your opening statement.

My son also has the ability to take AB 7 play to a whole new level.. just ahve to wait and see if he dodges the curse of his genetics (his mum cannot tackle).

And yes I have watched the Canes.. he looks good. But not as good as Cane. And more importantly Canes game transfers to test.. do we know that about Savea yet?
-

I don't think Cane was this good at 20.

I probably haven't seen enough of Savea to understand but how is Savea playing better than Cane? and how does he offer a whole lot more?

Savea looks shit hot against crap defense as he has the extra pace. Which is why I see him as a great bench option against tired defense.
-

Cane's work this year is fucking outstanding. Especially given the pack in front of him, and his loose forward mates. Perhaps he's just not pretty enough for Caners?

-

well shit, a youtube highlight reel, now I'm convinced!

Hes faster, Id say pound for pound hes the strongest player in Super Rugby and if you watch his work rate he is unbelievable. A mate and I were watching the game against the Rebels and were just gobsmacked at how good he is for a 21 year old. Mark my words he will be the best Canes player ever by the end of his career.

I'd say you are wrong.

Some of those little fellas might beat him on pound for pound calcs.
-

Don't get me wrong Cane is an awesome player and deserves to be number 1 but there is something special in Ardie. He has the ability to put considerable pressure on Cane when he comes into the All Blacks frame and he has the ability to be a international star. I think its a positive. Wouldn't you rather two amazing open-sides in NZ over one, it certainly creates depth and healthy competition.
-

Didn't Sam Cane make his AB debut at 20, so someone thought he was outstanding then too?

These conversations are always good (often amusing) and highlights the good problems to have.
-

Wasn't Cane an All Black at 20?

Pfft yeah right. With an older brother like Julian no wonder he throws players off him with ease.
-

Nah because he was wearing a black jersey and Ardie is only in yellow
-

Well I will concede that Cane had nowhere near as developed an ability to stand in the backline between the 12 and winger that Savea displayed in that video.

yes Savea might turn out to be a very good AB, but you seem to forget that most people are taking issue with your initial claims... not your subsequent back track... that maybe one day Savea might be better than cane
-

Hahaha I love winding some of you Ferners up. Tbh I thinks its great to see two outstanding opensides in NZ atm. Both offer quality differences in their style of play and maybe your right, Savea might be more suited to the bench. Whatever the case he is going to be an excitement machine when he finally pulls on the black jersey.

So back it up? What is the criteria?

I've seen Cruden bust through some big tackles and DMac has smashed Nadolo.

Are you talking gym numbers or what?
-

Bingo!

Reminds me of when Canes fans were proclaiming Hosea Gear as "the best winger in the world." Looked great at Super level but completely ineffective at test level when facing quality defences.

Yep. 20 when Cane debuted, 21 when he was added to the leadership group.

Ardie, on the other hand, was called into the AB squad as a non-playing member at 20 and hasn't been seen in there since. Even Todd was higher up in the pecking order than Ardie.
-

Classic. All these Chiefs fans getting all defensive. I bet you won't be disagreeing with me when hes in Black and tearing other international sides a new one.

We're not defensive. We're right.
