@SBW1 The Highlanders sit at 7th on the table, so they're still in a finals' position. Remember, the top 8 make it. Still a lot of round robin games to be played.
The competition really need to change the playoffs to top 4 or top 6. Top 8 just waters down this competition too much. Every team should earn the right to play playoff footy, right now the Highlanders aren't even close to looking like a playoff team even though the competition suggests they are.
cant argue with that, currently if we make it through we're just looking at another hiding...not exactly engaging

@Kiwiwomble Heard JK talking about some kind of draft to help out struggling teams like the Landers. Obviously it won't happen this year. Surely something can be done to help them out.

Nah no matter the comp, even with drafts, some teams struggle. Unless you are talking about transtasman drafts

@Canes4life RA would never agree to it. Table tells you why. All these notions about 'earning the right' etc don't pay the bills.
What they actually need to do is figure out how to even the comp. If it was even (or more even) it might be possible to have a top 4 cut off.
Diluting the competition by having 8 teams in the playoffs isn't exactly going to create hype and excitement though is it? Reducing the number of playoff teams to me is a no brainer. There is enough young talent running around throughout those Australian teams that they should be expecting at least 2 teams to be in that top 6 every year. (Brumbies being almost a given).

@FakatavaAllBlack The same can be said of a number of players in all the Aussie teams except the Reds. You can attribute much of the Rebels success to NPC players in their ranks. Mataele would be useful at the Landers for sure. I would like to see him back at the Saders next year personally.

@SBW1 watching Mataele on the weekend it did make me ponder why is this guy who plays his Npc in the south island not at say the Highlanders instead all the way over at the Force
He moved to the Force after several years of knee injury after knee injury (and quite a bit of weight gain). Maybe that's the reason why the Highlanders didn't sign him? At the time, signing him must have been considered quite a risk.

It's rugby. A couple of years ago it was the chiefs, for close to a decade it was the blues.
We're all getting a bit too dramatic when a team has an off season, even though it's regular as clockwork.
No helping out needed, the pendulum will swing, right?

If they're going to change the playoffs to a top 6 that only reduces the number of games in an already short competition. I'd wouldn't mind a top 6, but more importantly need to increase the number of games, every team plays each other home and away, remove the current bye weeks and you only have to add a few more rounds.

i get what your saying but i dont think its that simple, some teams definitely have longer or higher highs, even when it was the blues you could see the potential, it was more of a "why aren't they better" kind of deal, huge population, major city more attractive to live in even had several all blacks that just weren't firing at super level.....dunedin cant claim those things when trying to attract new players
