I've never seen Tickner as international quality when he plays. Sodhi is back.
New Zealand Test squad for the tour of Pakistan: Tim Southee (capt), Michael Bracewell, Tom Blundell (wk), Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young
New Zealand are touring Pakistan for the first time since 2003 and will be playing two Tests starting on December 26 in Karachi and January 3 in Multan.
Might be best to merge the thread I started.
What has he done ? Given the vast majority of guys have better first class records than test records ( except David Gower curiously enough, county cricket bored him ) do they expect him to really compete at that level ?
It’s the start of the 90’s all over again. He’s not being picked on “talent” or “promise”….he’s played 58 matches for that record.
Mind you a first test line up like this looks good provided there aren’t any injuries.
Latham
Young
KW
Conway
Nicholls
Mitchell
Blundell
Southee
Wags
Henry
PatelOne quick will go for a 2nd spinner crucial on those dry cracking pitches.
Probably Shodi a wrist spinner to vary the attack and have the ball going another way. -

christ, can you imagine facing him coming back from injury? At club level?
Fuck. That. Shit.
it's always fucked when players of that level come back via club cricket. you realise your level very fucking quickly.

Even if you didn't know who he was, turning up and seeing that monster lining up to open the bowling would have your openers shitting their pants before a ball is bowled.

@No-Quarter and then seeing when the keeper stands
I've told the story before f even a guy of Doull's pace working me over (and chipping me)

I was shit bat thoughI was awesome, I was basically Lance Cairns/Tim Southee just without the bowling ability.

I was shit bat thoughHaha yeah, we watch bowlers like Southee throwing them down at 130ks and call him medium pace, but when you face 130ks it feels more like 150, it's on you in a flash. I've never faced anything 140k+, I actually don't know how professional batsmen even hit the ball.

Anyone know much about Je ry Shipley? I see he has been named in the one day squad and is being touted as an all rounder. I am hoping he is not another bits and pieces player, ok at both but not outstanding in either.

27 and 25 for bowling and batting respectively. That’s very promising.
We have an appalling legacy of bits and pieces players and should hang our collective heads in shame.

26 year old 1.95cm all rounder plays in the Country comp in Canterbury.
Decent pace and sharp bounce being a tall bowler.
Good bat.A few from the Shipley family have been decent cricketers and rugby players.

Would he be good enough to hold a spot in either discipline if he wasn't an 'all-rounder'?

Bit disappointed in those figures to be honest.

Don’t look at his limited overs stats then.
Early days but he does scream “bowler who can bat a bit”

As a bowler yes, below from an article on him
He was the leading wicket-taker in last season’s domestic Super Smash T20 competition (18 at 14.11) and is currently tied for second on the Ford Trophy one-day wicket-taking table (12 at 11.91), boosted by his hat-trick against Wellington last month..
I think he has really come on in the last 18 months so the stats are moving in the right direction.

Yeah I have read a few articles on him the last few days. I was sort of hoping someone had seen him play enough to form an opinion. Stats can be misleading. Shame we haven't got a resident domestic cricket fanatic on the Fern who watches games and can comment more on the players.

He had an appalling white ball record (with the ball) in both versions of the white ball game until last year when he had a stonker of a season with the ball.
His red ball record was always pretty good.
His career List A record with the ball is still actually only back to OK, rather than good. But the projections are in the right direction. I think this is the version he has been selected for for blackcaps?
I think he'll be a good red ball prospect, including as a first or second change bowler. Less sure in the white ball.
Caveat is how helpful pitches have become for bowlers in NZ domestic cricket, for some stupid reason. Apart from this season, which can be explained by weather.
Batting is more in the hitter spectrum rather than batsman spectrum. As opposed to the other young all rounder in the domestics (currently injured) Nathan Smith who has genuine batting skills.
