So midfield is a real concern.
We need to try Havili/Goodhue.
No No we need ALB back with Rieko
No with Goodhue
Let's try Tupaea/ALB or Tupaea/Goodhue
Nah Jordie /Goodhue is the answer
Shit this coaching lark is tougker than I thought ....
What’s George Moala up to ?
Frizell and Reece got selected so no reason he can’t as well.

What those analysis videos highlight (whether correct in detail or not) is that there is far more to the midfield functioning well than we see on a surface level. It's not 'moves' as such but more a pattern that requires sometimes perfect positioning .
It's what we see in teams like Ireland and why players we consider as limited (e.g. Bundee Aki) can look so good.
In searching for the right players for the 12/13 jerseys in the ABs, whether through injury, availability or just plain searching we didn't allow those patterns to be fully understood and implemented until they became second nature. It is partly a combination thing but more a key piece to an overall pattern. If you are slightly forward you rush the pass, slightly back there is no opportunity. That's the kind of margins they play with at these levels.
As much as I am not a fan of Havili I can see the need to stick with this combo. ALB can come back as bench/cover because he is a smart enough player to be proficient in shooting in within the pattern. Maybe Goodhue the same. Tupaea was being used in that role because the others weren't there to shadow at training, hence him slotting in at 13.
I don't think Jordie has the brains to play that way. He, like BB, does his best work instinctively. -
Would like to see Havili/Goodhue get some time with current game plan.
Goodhue doesn't have the speed to be effective at centre. He was never quick anyway but looks slower after the injuries. 2nd 5 would be his position.
If you look at the stats from the Jo'burg test, Havili attempted 6 tackles and missed 3 of them. We can all agree that he looked much better on attack but defence is still an issue.

discuss the nouses of midfield play and reading it but put the best and most experenced player on the bench ,but want a full back/ winger compo there instead -

I think I'll agree with Ma'a & Conrad and stick with Havili & Reiko for Pumas 1& 2 and hope they develop. As @pakman mentioned, ALB is probably back for the EOYT and while I think he's a world class centre, his versatility might count against hims for a starting slot if the DH/RI combo grows.
Foster has a tricky job balancing those three while at the same time giving QT & RTS game time.
And that Charles Ngatai bloke was a real loss..

this thread says there are loads more posts since I last logged in, but when I scan over them, it doesnt look like any new ones....
and it's taken 3k posts for you to realise this?
For all we get same ol same ol, this is still my preferred rugby forum. We may or may not agree on plenty but generally find it one of better ones I have been part of.

The one aspect I think sets Havili apart is his distribution ability. Much like Nonu, he's basically got the skills in that regard to put people into space excellently, like a very good 10. He just lacks the rest of the package unfortunately - but I really do think with experience he will certainly be able to bring that skill set to the fore (which will be very valuable), while "bolstering" his other talents to an adequate level.
It just might be a bit painful getting there...

I do not believe we can win the RWC with that midfield.
Well, not if it doesn't grow or get better - which is why I brought it up as an area for improvement. So what would we like to see Foster and co do to improve things?
Probably a complete pipe dream but IMHO the best combo is JB and Goodhue. I would love to see a backline of Smith, BB/RM, JB, Goodhue, Reiko, Clark, Jordan. That would be pretty. In terms of 10, I heart BB, but I heart the Allblacks more. I'd like to see both the 10s play under the "new regime" of a forward pack actually establishing go-forward before passing judgement.
In the forwards, I think we need at least 2 big munters starting in the back row. Ardie and Cane starting isn't optimal and one has to be benched. Nothing new there I guess.
Yeah the JB as a 12 can be put to bed at least for this RWC cycle. For this cycle, I think they will rotate between two combos: the current DH/RI combo and the safe and experienced ALB/JG combo as the alternative on a horses for courses basis

experienced ALB/JG comb
not sure there is a more overrated player on this forum than Jack Goodhue. He's played 19 tests and he's "experienced" now.
He hasn't played a test in coming up two years but should be the starting centre.
He's so big and powerful, yet is only 6'2 and 100 kegs
The wider social media universe is way worse for it, but to read some posts you would think we have prime Frank Bunce jut wasting away in the squad

That’s as big as a prime Umaga/Ieremia to be fair….or in the modern game Henshaw/De Allende give or take.

This is the best endorsement of Goodhue you can get.

THANK YOU!
Thought i was going mad, i'll also add those 19 test have been over 6 years...thats how injury prone he is
look at someone like ben smith, forgetting his first test, he didn't break into the AB properly until 2012 and last played in 2019....so in those 7 years he played 83 tests
yes, when he's fit he's in the conversation but surely we need to stop hanging our hopes on something so unpredictable and jack goodhue being able to string several games together for the AB's
-
@mariner4life dunno if I'd say over rated, more unfulfilled, due to his injuries and lack of game time.
Pre-Irish tour his name kept popping up due to his 'experience' but <20 tests is not massively experienced, sure he is a smarter, but limited player and probably plays more like a veteran, but doesnt detract form the fact he isnt.

I don't think anyone has referred to him as the second coming but when looking at 13s over the past few years he's, IMHO, easily been the best. But ultimately I agree that there's a good chance he won't even be an option going forward. But a man can dream. All I know is that he's miles better than Rieko, who is one of the world's best wingers but but a farking average 13.
