Not that I think he’s in our top 6 loosies, but I hope Frizell gets selected just to see the melt down on here.
Given injury who misses out to Frizell?
Don't have a problem with his selection if there's a couple out and he's the best of the rest.

@Tim bugger - hopefully he can get a full preseason in for world cup season 2023.
Yeah. His absence virtually guarantees Jacobsen a squad spot now.
Does it? It helps his chances but I still think he’ll struggle to squeeze in
What loosies do you think they’ll pick?
Agree.
With Cane and Savea dead certainties and Papali’i very likely, they do have a lot of bases covered.
Add Ioane and Sotutu who the AB coaches seem to play as specialist 6 and 8 respectively, there is the opportunity to select another specialist 6 or 8. One that has a bit of size and loves to run the ball.
That bait's a bit off.

Cane, Savea, Papalii, Ioane, Sotutu certainties. Three who can play 7, three who can play 8, two who can play 6.
With Vaa'i able to cover six, there may only be one spot left?
Frizell, Jacobson, Robinson competing for one spot?
I think with all the loosies pretty much established (comparatively) then it'd be a good idea to plump for MMT or Sowakula, I think Robinson will just be unlucky, especially with Vaai showing similar abilities.

I like the idea of having like for like replacements, so injuries don’t alter the pattern
Cane & Papali’i play a similar role
Savea & Sotutu play a similar role
Akira & ?Ball in hand Mikaele-Tu’u is the most similar to Akira. Get him in, do some coaching, and improve the rest of his game
There’s still plenty of versatility with those guys too. For instance I expect Papali’i to start a test or two at 6 etc etc

Fucking Finau

Maybe it's a statement, mariner has pulled?

I do like his aggression but not this year. We need to run out the ABXV to give him experience at the next level.
I believe they will pick Frizell. I wouldn’t, but they will.

I dunno why, but they love having a few women beaters in the All Blacks.
MMT would be a selection I would be behind. That wont happen either though, I bet.

MMT plays like a fitter Sione Lauaki. I’d get him in there this year.

Though we've got a good 6/7/8 pool, there's a good chance he'll be in the squad, I reckon. Gives him a taste and lets the coaches have a closer look and might make a bench slot for later Tests. Think he'll be on the EOYT as well. Hope so.

In a few years time, when we are talking about Rieko as one of our best 13s, I’m planning on re-visiting this conversation.
I can understand the misgivings until this last year, when he has been the best 13 in NZ by a fucking mile.
That’s roughly 1.6 km for those who prefer their distances in metric.

@taniwharugby said in All Blacks 2022:
@Tim and of those 3, Frizell is probably the least versatile, Jacobson the most versatile...so I think he's the other loosie.
I would think Jacobson is close to a certainty, I also believe that 7 loosies will get picked.

Yep but I not sure how to convert a country mile, and I think Reiko is best be a country mile!!

Could even be 8 if they want to bring another option into the fold. More likely 7 with someone like Finau or MMT training with the squad (assuming neither eligible for NZM)
-
Last year they selected 5 locks and 7 loose forwards but might only decide on 4 locks, and as @Crucial says, have extra cover at loose forward. Lord will be the 5th lock if they go that way, but could also miss out.
Will Vaa'i be considered an option at 6 in the squad? If so, that might change the makeup of the loose forward mix and make Frizell surplus to requirements.

This is what I had a couple of days ago.

Loose forwards: Sam Cane (c), Ardie Savea, Dalton Papalii, Akira Ioane, Luke Jacobson, Hoskins Sotutu, (MMT/Finau/Grace/Frizzell)
I think that NZM may be a vehicle for some 'fringe' or 'surplus' squad members. eg My 5 locks included Lord but if he is NZM eligible it could be better from him to return to play via that path knowing he can switch back at a moments notice.
That would open up space for 2 of those bracketed loosies
