All Blacks vs Springboks II

@victor-meldrew , biggest problem with Patrick Tuipulotu he floats in and out of games his strength is his ball carrying , but is not a viable jumping option at lineout time had one or 2 carries and got a good turnover but apart from that despite having 40 minutes to impose himself was a disappointment.,really poor read in defence when caught in no mans land when the South African winger scored .
Have always thought Super Rugby is his ceiling , he’s had 40 appearances in the black jersey over 7 years and never imposed himself as high quality international lock .
Retallick whilst still quality looks a shadow of the player who was injured pre RWC ,still works himself to standstill but for some reason looks down on physicality. It’s a shame Scott Barrett got injured ,because he’s a worker, runs himself to standstill ,just discipline at times is an issue .I was hoping they would give Tupou Vaa’i a spot on the bench because he does offer genuine impact .
Outside Whitelock , Retallick,Barret and Vaa’i that’s our best locking options .
It’s quite thin when you think about it . -
@bones true, but he also called some that benefited NZ, like the Steyn tackle where he appeared to strip the ball in the tackle, but was then pinged for not rolling away.
I struggle to see how so many teams (not just the Boks) can be offside either on the kick-chase or wide out on defence, yet nobody ever seems to penalise them. A sure fire way to create space for attacking rugby is to stop defenders from taking up space illegally.
Ironically, it was the ABs who were pinged twice (I think) for being offside as they advanced too early.

@canefan Cane coming back is like Retallick coming back. They are both getting older and should he just walk into the number 6? Let’s see how he goes first. He has had some many injuries and it’s taken a toll. I would rather focus on what we have that reminisce about the old glory days.
BBBR looks to have lost some of that physicality that he used to have in spades. Not sure if he has put all that bulk back on after Japan or if he's still opting for mobility at the expense of his power game.

Discipline is way better than it was and and he's upped his workrate several notches this year. Much more mature player.
Agree about Vaa'i - def one for the future

Pressure and flow changing calls definitely benefitted the boks (and some ridiculously blatant stuff missed), it was a fucking shocking ref performance when you boil it down.
But if the ABs sharpened up and hadn't fucken forgotten how to catch and pass, they would have pissed it in.

Interesting thing that there were four distinct periods.
First 15: to and fro
Second 20 ABs on top.
Third 25 Boks dominated (14 unanswered points)
Last 20 ABs on top.
Big impact from bench. From 35 to 60 where Boks were best, and we were at our worst.
Will be focus of my rewatch. No thanks….😉
The only test match I have missed in the last 25 years is the 99 semi and to this day I have not watched it. I have seen the odd highlight here or there but I refuse to sit down and put myself through it.
The first half is worth a watch 😎

@bones lesson learned after 2007 was to take the ref out of the equation. ABs did enough to win today, especially from 25-20 down. Boks also did enough, especially from 20-11 down.
Tight game, small margins. ABs wind the clock down and I'm sure it would South African fans bemoaning the calls not going their way.

It wouldn't be the first time they were wrong.
Might have been nice to see some new armbands though.

As an aside that SA medic is lovely. If I were a bok I’d be sure to have a permanent groin niggle that needed attending to before the big match.

I would hate to think what the scores would've been if jordie hasn't been available these two matches, we'd have lost both by a big margin

Worst ref I've seen in ages.
I think its really hard to be good in a game like this.
I often wonder if non-neutral refs would be better for SA-NZ games. They'd be less phased by the occasion and would be under so much scrutiny and weight of tradition to be impartial that we'd get better reffing.

Just watched the 2nd half again. Richie made a blunder in the 73rd minute unfortunately, had an overlap with Sevu, Rieko and ALB outside of him on the South African 22, and there was a good chance that a try would have been scored as there was so much of space but he chose to take it up himself. Wasn't catastrophic as we got a penalty from the next ruck but a 7 pointer then would have meant that the Boks would have had to score a try to win it.

Foster's team with no ability too deal with this shit.
Been there long before Foster took over. Thought there were signs of improvement but the last 2 games have exposed that thought
Thus late Hansen/foster, as I said. Hansen should have retired post lions as originally planned, foster would have had his go at RWC 19, this would now be second year of a decent, innovative set up. But this cycle is a wash out
