He said the new movies are pretty good, which immediately makes his opinion worthless. But of course he focuses on the "racism" and the "mysogeny" and doesn't even both listening to what the fans are actually pissed off about. Weak arguments. Where have I seen them before?
What I find hilarious is people like this say "you take it all too seriously" yet you can guarantee if these films started containing the kind of politics they don't happen to agree with they'd be up in arms. You honestly think this guy would have no issue if the makers were pro-Trump and wanted to convey that through the films? Same goes with the hypocrites here.
Personally I don't want any of the political bullshit in these films, regardless of my stance. I'll take two films: American Sniper and Lone Survivor. The books those films are based on are very politically conservative and very critical of the media etc. Yet the films focus exclusively on the experiences of these guys, not their politics (nor even their religion).
Any genuine SW fan should be concerned about this. Don't believe me? Look at the Solo box office.
They can't accept that people don't like the new characters without putting some sexist/racist/misogynist spin on it.
It's much more simple than that. They're just shit characters.

It's total bullshit and I can't express how much it upsets me in particular.
I love strong, smart, independent women. I was together with one for 18 years. She was taken from me and I'd do anything to get her back. Now I'm doing my best to find another partner and I couldn't give a shit about her tits or if she can suck a golf ball through a hose, I want someone strong, driven, successfully and, above, all intelligent.
People like me (single dad with 2 kids, own business, massive stress) need a place to escape. Thats comes most often in the form of my beloved Canes and Allblacks but also through entertainment. It's not blocking out the outside world, it's simply taking a break from it. If I want politics (of any type) I can just leave the house. That shit is everywhere. SW is supposed to be a mindless space opera for kids and adults wanting to be kids for a couple of hours. It should not be a place where a bunch of activists try to inject their politics. It should be about good stories and characters, not about race or gender or fucking sexuality. Yes, I'm sure that there are probably millions of SW fans who are a bit sad and need to get a life but so fucking what. It's because of them and the thousands of dollars they spend on SW stuff that this thing is worth billions. Why the people at Lucas Films think it's a good idea to slander them is beyond me. They have legitimate concerns, so address them rather than get all butthurt and slander them as sexist or racist.
Clearly there has been an enormous backlash to TLJ. Sure there is a group of vocal trolls who write disgusting shit, but that's the internet. You only need a couple of dozen and everything goes to hell. Can anyone seriously claim that the millions who chose to not see Solo are nothing but sexist Nazis? If TLJ was any good they'd be going to Solo regardless of whatever Marvel had the previous week. And since when has Marvel been able to push around SW? Maybe since fans decided they have much better films? Just a thought.
Now can we please drop this bullshit and discuss the films on their merits? Is that too much to ask?

Rumours are starting to be reported that Kathleen Kennedy might be out. So there is hope that the identity politics might leave Star Wars.
Or people that think everything is identity politics are appeased?
Plenty of black/women/asian, even Arab like characters in the original series but no overly sensitive labelling of identity politics back then. The same people complaining now profess to like the old movies. Go figure.

You’ve already proven many times that you are blind to identity politics, mainly because you agree with it.
I’m sure it’s news to people that there were plenty of black or woman characters in the OT too, when it was one of the main criticisms of those films by the IP crowd.

@kirwan Jesus man, just don't watch them then - this place has turned into a fucking whine fest about identity politics. Don't like a decision someone makes, call it identity politics. Someone choses to promote something that isn't white males - identity politics. FFS. The writers of movies can write what they want about a movie. You don't have have to go and see it. If you don't like the direction it's going just don't watch.
@Rancid-Schnitzel might think that Lone Survivor and American Sniper don't come across as political but they are noticeably political even if they aren't 'as' political as their source material - but I like them as action movies just like I like Star Wars movies as sci fi movies.

That "just don't watch" it argument is so pathetic. Apparently if something you like is being turned to shit you should just grin and bear it. Maybe you think obsessing over race, gender and sexuality is a good thing. Others respectively disagree. If you don't like those arguments, then don't comment.
As for the second comment, that's completely false. They're war movies based on true events so there will have to be some politics there. But saying they are noticeably political is complete bollocks.

And uninspiring story. As far as seeing politics in the films, I guess you see what you want to see. For me, RO and HS hold up in this regard, good characters and good story. TFA and TLJ on reflection relied much more on reputation. The third installment they are going to have to go all out because if Abrams churns out another ep7 it ain't going to cut it

The big problem is that there's no cliffhanger here. I didn't like TFA but at least you wanted to see no. 2 to get all those questions answered (Luke, Snope, Kylo, Rey's parents etc.). TLF effectively fucked the pooch for all of them. Carrie Fisher is also dead so no Leah. The whole trilogy has been so poorly panned out.
Compare that with Infinity Wars.

Marvel are the gold standard for sure. I'm not sure where SW goes after ep 9. The best two films feature peripheral characters or times from the main story. Is it the freedom that the film makers feel they are afforded, as opposed to the constraints of the main story? It doesn't have to be like this but maybe they feel the expectation to make a certain film, much like Superman and Batman vs Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy (a story line I knew nothing about before seeing the movie).
If the original SW films were defined by their characters, now that all of the main ones are gone perhaps they need to concentrate more on sub stories for a while

The SW universe is so vast and the potential for creating new and awesome storylines should be limitless. Yet, they are walking these bizarre path of not trying to vier away from the originals but at the same time destroying the characters that defined them.
Even from a strictly business standpoint the whole strategy doesn't make sense. Did the best minds at Disney and Lucas Film honestly think that Holdo and Rose would shift merchandise? Did they think slandering fans would be good for business? . It's like How to Kill a Brand 101.

Maybe they thought to apply the copycat method and hope this was the easiest way to keep the money flowing. So far it has, but the reception for Solo should alarm them. It is a very good film that may have been let down by a poor last film and the arrogance to release it when they did. I am sure SW can easily be turned around, but they will need to be bolder with Ep 9 to do it. Time to go all in; rather than make a movie that finishes off the last two, maybe they should go all out and make one that finishes on the kind of infinity war cliff hanger that gets people excited again?

I expect the release timing was an attempt to emulate the Marvel model of releasing a couple of movies within a year, but I don't think the Star Wars universe suits that style. One a year at Xmas works pretty well for them.

Bullshit. Aren't you in business? Is that how you treat your customers? You know the ones who actually pay money for your products? Sure they can run the entire franchise into the ground if they so desire, but expecting the fans to shut up and be happy about it is ridiculous. It's like saying we should all shut up and not criticise the ABs if we believe they're being steered in the wrong direction. Hey maybe Blues fans should just turn off the TV. It's just a nonsense argument.
You don't mind them "mixing it up"? What does that even mean?

@rancid-schnitzel They've had one movie perform badly so far, it's not as bad as you're making out, and the reasons for that are attributable to a number of reasons not just the ones you've focused on. No film can please everyone but the previous three pleased enough, and I daresay that Solo will please a lot when they get round to watching it on streaming services.
To pretend for a second that you actually don't know what I mean when I say mixing it up - I don't mind them having more female characters, different coloured characters, gay characters etc.

Yes it is that bad Nepia. Deny it all you want, but a huge chunk of the fans are pissed off and the casuals don't want to part with their cash. If TLJ had been well received there is no way Solo would have tanked, regardless of the release date.
Here's a really novel idea. How about creating good characters and casting based on who best fits the bill? Just a thought. It's SW not an understanding diversity training video.

@rancid-schnitzel No it's not, it's just to you because you're on the negative side. TFA, R1 and TLJ were all the biggest box office films of the year. The drop from the mega huge box office of the first released film (after a time) to TLJ was consistent with the Star Wars series. I'm willing to bet that Episode 9 will top the box office when it's released as well. Solo is the anomaly at this point in time.
The Star Wars universe has created lots of shit character diverse or not. I'm sure they always try to create good ones but sometimes they come up with a Jar Jar.
