'Super Rugby' 2021

@KiwiMurph see a crossover finals series (maybe finalist or top 2 in each comp) makes more sense than the previously contrived series.

Makes sense. How are they supposed to attract enough good players to have a team that will be competitive enough in 2021? There's not enough time. The financial side of it may also be difficult to arrange in such a short time. 2022 would be much better to enter a Pasifika team, esp because there are still so many other things to sort out, too, such as who is going to manage the team, where will they be based, where will they attract their players from etc etc.
Which is why the Asia Pacific Barbarians seem like the most realistic of the PI bids. They said from the beginning that 2021 was impossible so they made a bid for 2022
The others were way too optimistic

Id forget about the crossover (for 2021) and just continue with what worked this year. Then look at 2022 for a combined competition. With the hope that Aust can by then have 5 teams that are strong enough to compete with the NZ teams
-
@KiwiMurph said in 'Super Rugby' 2021:
@Winger why forget it for 2021? Both NZR and RA could use the extra revenue/product.
Because it will be boring. And bad for Aussie rugby with NZ teams almost certainly beating the Aussie team.
I would prefer a bigger knockout crossover competition. Maybe also including the pro 14 (or 16) sides. And if SA only have 4 teams (instead of 6) each team should be stronger so maybe they could win it
-
@KiwiMurph I'd say with the limited rugby, not to mention no Super Rugby, it'd become a great product to sell.
-
and the top aussie team should be at least competitive, the reds had some get results in pre COVID Super rugby

@Snowy Basically from picking Foster on, NZR has been a cluster fuck.
Agreed. The only thing I will give them credit for is the retention of our top players. We have managed to sign most of our top guys till the next RWC. Covid may have helped a little though.

Fixed that fir you.

With no hope of judging how much they've improved or need to improve?
No. That doesn't make sense.
But by all means, let's have another season of 2 games a week for fans and 2 or 3 rounds of the same fixtures. That won't get

boring
at all.

So we're all saying that we don't want all 5 Super AU teams but we want the China Lions. Just kiss and make up and have a 10 team comp with Australia and be done with it.
spot on, 18 rounds, 2 byes, 4 team playoff over 2 weeks. Done!

Yeah that kind of sums up the breakdown between the two unions nicely.

@Kirwan Oh man. After a decade of saying the Force don't cut it they are the next in line to join SRAo? what a fucking farce.
Needs a healthy dose of humilty from both unions to repair this working relationship. Both unions need each other to be strong to keep the money rolling in.
I'm hoping this is just a misguided negotiating tactic to make out like we have other options.
The simple answer is five teams per country in a trans Ta$man competition with no guaranteed finals in either country. Top two teams host the semis, final in the top team's country.
RA can put their money where their mouths are, and we can have decent, short competition without too much bloat.
-
@Bovidae Good bet. To be honest - it's looking more and more likely that we are done for. No TV deal, no confirmed competition, no major sponsor and our finances in a very big hole. Next year could see administration.
Makes sense for Twiggy but for NZRU?
