It was great PR though

Barnes is going to referee the game. Very happy with that, Gardner would have been our worst nightmare.
Confirmed? I assumed that we would not get a southern hemisphere referee, the NH unions would not allow it because it feels like stacking the deck in our favour. I would rather have Barnes than the frog men at this point. At least he won't probably miss any forward passes this time....
Jeepers mate. Since when do unions appoint referees?? You sound paranoid.

Not trying to, I just expected us to get one of the Frenchies

I think the English carry one on their staff. All disciplinary hearings need lawyers these days, it's kind of weird, but I guess improves the process.
Clearly not the consistency though

The refs all reviewed. I expect them to add experience into the mix for the choice. On form the French refs should miss out but they are experienced. Barnes has form and experience. So he’ll be one of the refs for sure

Given that 4 of the 12 refs are French there is a good chance at least one, if not two, are involved in the QF and SFs. Those from the 12 that aren't selected will likely be ARs.

@kiwiinmelb that was the duo in the fake team that was released last week
Gotta feel for Aki (or anyone that finds themselves in a similar position) all the work to get to this, then a momentary lapse and your dreams are gone!

TAB odds are clearcut for all the QFs.
https://www.tab.co.nz/sports/quick-multi
If you believe these; South Africa, New Zealand, England and Wales will all win comfortably.
I'd bet against that happening - though, I reckon the Jaapies will be comfortably too good for Japan.
Aus 1-12 @ $4.50 (yesterday) didnt look the worst value bet out there

A lazy $100 at those odds would help pay for the years of therapy I’ll need if we lose .
Or a bender , it’s good to have options

There was little chance of him getting off, it would set a precedent of inconsistency which is where most criticism of world rugby is aimed.
Now, watch us get a red card on the weekend then get it overturned ... that'll feed the conspiracy theorists!
Has Jones tweeted yet that apparently it was a 14 man commitee who all agreed to overturn, except for the NZ rep who denied?
And the Irish rep who denied, no...?
That would be a touch far fetched ...

Hansen knows this Irish team very well now.
Last year in Dublin New Zealand were at the end of a hard season and had a tough game against the English.
They will be fresh and well prep'd. I can see them sucking the Irish in the centre of the park, forcing them to commit players to the ruck, then hitting them out wide. I hope I'm wrong, obviously, but I can see a pretty big scoreline for the AB's.
You may be new to the Fern but you've obviously played this underdog game before, and I won't let this continue. Ireland are odds on favourites, theirs to lose. Would be very surprised if the ABs got up.
Err
New Zealand 1/5 on
Ireland 5/1Just sayin like...
pfffft, sounds like another Paddy Power promotion to merk people.
Yes - Paddy Power and 16 other firms on Oddschecker.
so it's a conspiracy then...

@Bones Who knows what powder Schmidt has in his magazine?
I suspect they are on a downward slide after their pinnacle 18 months ago. Same game plan, Japan out thought them and out paced them. If we are on song it could be a big win. And like the 2015 QF, there are scores to settle
18 months ago they were in the middle of the Six Nations.
How far down the slide were they, when they played Argentina and NZ?
The team had a middling 6N and RWC build up. They got found out by Japan, and beat Scotland in a game that was played at slo mo pace. Of course they are a danger and everything that has come before will count for nothing if they can win on the weekend. But my observation (often from afar) is that after the highlight of the Dublin win against the ABs they have looked less than their best. Time will tell if the team were merely keeping their powder dry for an AB QF. Maybe that was the plan all along, knock us out in the QF before having to potentially meet us deeper in the tournament?
No idea if they can. They were 6-7 months into a slide in form when they beat Italy, Argentina, NZ and USA, but the cracks only started to show in the 6N.
They won two against Wales in RWC warm-ups fairly handily, and a second/third string team got hammered by England. Put Scotland away handily, but their lineup against Japan wasn’t good enough despite scoring tries 2-1. Russia and Samoa were disposed of handily enough.
On the face of it, they don’t look like they can win next weekend. And the bookies and Irish media and fans generally seem to agree.
NZ by 20 probably.

If WR were actually a competent organisation the fix would involve one of the two Frenchies as ref, one as an AR and then probably Barnes as the other AR.
They've left too many variables on the table with just Barnes as the ref ... the ABs actually win the odd game with him in charge.

I know - Ireland have a worse record with him. He’s as popular as Ewan McKenna organizing a sing-song in the Lansdowne bar.

Although, in our head to heads under him it's 1-1 (and our win was the thrashing in the Naki that he had little chance to influence) so despite the fact the deck is fully stacked, still advantage to Ireland.
