Do you reckon Cheika looks at the opposition at all? Or just relies on the team playing their way to be enough?
Nope. I've interviewed him on the GAGR pod and he said as much.
It's such a self-defeating approach to the game in 2019.
Well he really is a clown then.
Blind Freddy could see that Genia passing long is easy pickings for an opposition player close to the ruck. Why persist? Lack of variation and tactical awareness on what your opposition will do.

@mariner4life agree, I though the Wallabies were going to roll over the top of them. Thought White wasn't as good as he has been, but he was heaps better than Genia, and Toomua was great, so direct.
That said, the Welsh really stopped playing in the 2nd half, like they were just trying to defend the lead. Played with none of the width they had so much first half success with.
As an aside, so good to see the Wallabies hoist up a couple of defensive lineouts in their own half, it feels like a lost art these days!
The Welsh looked gassed in that 2nd half. Lots of players taking a knee and hands on hips.
It was played at a cracking pace and the Wallabies subs really upped the anti.

That is jaw-dropping, but at the same time a bit scary. They are as good as that and able to beat the best teams without even doing anything to counter the opposition? Fark.

Helluva game for a neutral.
Thought the Welsh were absolutely clinical in taking their chances early on, and Aussie looked a bit off the pace initially.
Then such a strong comeback from the Wallabies, I thought they'd win it for sure. The Welsh looked knackered. And yet they gutsed it out for the win. Great game.I did think the Kerevi call was harsh...
-
The Davies call was 50/50, and at very least deserved a look upstairs. I think he's maybe an inch onside, but have a look at this shot:
To me that ball is not out of the ruck, and Davies is maybe just onside. But that's a static photo so hard to judge what happens next.
Given the importance of the try in the context of the game, I'm amazed they didn't give it a second look.
-
@barbarian yep. In all probability it's given as a try, as the evidence doesn't look compelling enough to overturn what looks like a try. But at least have a look.
-
@barbarian given they looked when the ABs played England at Twickenham..with so much at stake, having a look is a must in my book.

That article makes an excellent point: World Rugby hanging out of the referees to dry meant they'd apply the letter of the law rather than the spirit. And who forced WR to do that..?

If I had the choice between a week-long session with Margo Robbie and Scarlett Johansson vs Ireland losing to Japan and Australia losing to Wales in the same weekend at the world cup, I'd see you guys next week.
Im not walking away from that type of debauchery for a couple of rugby games. But I had to think for 30sec.
Great job Japan. Who the fuck kicks it out on the full when you are 7 behind and time up on the clock. Don't tell me it was about the bonus point loss either.
I thought like many others that Hooper was dead on with his comments to Poite. How referee's like Poite get as far as thye have, without any feeling for the game, is beyond me.

And meanwhile, a little boy waits
I don't have much love for hometown, but since when can he not get a crack and how did these shitty frog refs come to dominate test footy?

@canefan lol Glen Jackson has fucked the Lions and the Hurricanes several times over the years but he is a good ref.....spit
Didn't say that. Just saying he can't be worse than these other clowns

That's Lord Sir Glen Jackson OBM* to you lot.
(*OBM = Order of the BoP Mafia)

Nick Mallett referenced Glen Jackson in some of his comments on the weekend.
I am paraphrasing, but he was saying that the best available referees are at the RWC - except Glen Jackson who apparently (and obviously to Mallet's disagreement) lost out on a vote by the referee selection panel. -
@barbarian said in RWC: Australia v Wales (Pool D):
I can rant about the refs, or the TMOs, or World Rugby. I don't think any of them covered themselves in glory last night.
But I'd rather rant about our tactics. Our mindless adherence to a one-size-fits-all game plan, while Wales pick us off with smart plays and good execution. Our ten-minute stints of madness where we forget how to pass, catch and tackle. Our complete lack of goalkicking ability.
Wales were the better team, and deserved to win. To my eyes, they are greater than the sum of their parts. I don't think you can say the same about the Wallabies.
I've said it elsewhere, but the Davies intercept was a perfect summation of the difference between the two teams. An incredibly smart tactic that was well-devised and well-executed. They did their homework and capitalised on a weakness of ours.
What did we do? Run the same shit out that we always do, and let the cards fall how they may. It's just not good enough for an international rugby side.
Spot on.
In the Wales v Georgia thread somebody was up in arms with Davies' attempt at an unsuccessful interception. I posted that this is his calling card.
The Australians obviously hadn't watched any tape of Davies either.
