i much prefer trying to get momentum close in, then only once defence is static or back-pedalling do you go wider. it relies on either grunt or subtle angles and dummy runners to get the gain line close in, but if we do get it we are better placed than anyone else (because of smith) to go wide fast and find the space the rush creates out wide.
Lions Test 1 2017 we did this - offloaded well, slashing lines near the ruck. WEnt well.
That's our DRY, DRY powder.

it actually went OK in the second test too -- a marginal loss to an 'interesting' penalty with 14 men.

After SOB dodged yellow/red for taking Naholo out.

@pakman although that saved Kaino in the final test....
Personally I think losing Naholo was the straw that broke our camel (defence)'s back.

Righto. So I am claiming BIG (or is that "bigly" these days?) underdog status for the Boks on Saturday.
Firstly, it is forecast to be raining. And since most of the Boks are used to playing their rugby in dry conditions on hard grounds, compared with the AB's who seem to play at least 50% of their games in the wet on soft grounds, I think that's strike one against the Boks.
And secondly, and probably even a bigger factor, is the ref for the game... a certain Monsieur Jerome Garces.
With Garces as the ref, the Boks have only won 4 from 13 games.
Even more worryingly, is that with Garces handling the whistle, the Boks have won ZERO from 5 against the All Blacks. So the Boks are the Chihuahua's in this contest against the AB Rottweilers.

You would think since we have had years to prepare for the rush defense, we should have some pretty good tactics by now.
Tactics are one thing, execution and the players to do it are another.

This is an early vote for you ACT-Crusader - for the annual TSF Biggest Cojones award.
Not saying you may not be proved correct, but while everyone else is going for "close' you've put them on the block there matePlus: it affirms my Boks-are-underdogs narrative

Anyone saying Hansen will suddenly drop the dual playmaker thing is crazy.
Questions are who starts at 2, which midfield and whether Ioane or Smith get back in on the wing.
Possible All Blacks team (Knowler stuff): Beauden Barrett, Sevu Reece, Jack Goodhue, Sonny Bill Williams, George Bridge, Richie Mo'unga, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read (capt), Sam Cane, Ardie Savea, Sam Whitelock, Scott Barrett, Nepo Laulala, Dane Coles, Joe Moody.
Possible All Blacks team (Napier Herald):
Beauden Barrett, Sevu Reece, Anton Lienert-Brown, Ryan Crotty, George Bridge, Richie Mo'unga, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read, Sam Cane, Ardie Savea, Sam Whitelock, Scott Barrett, Nepo Laulala, Dane Coles, Joe Moody
Bench: Codie Taylor, Ofa Tu'ungafasi, Angus Ta'avo, Patrick Tuipulotu, Shannon Frizell, TJ Perenara, Sonny Bill Williams, Ben Smith

If Frizell were to make it that would be one hell of a comeback!

Ah, it's Thursday!
2:30 pm NZT for the team announcement.
Have been thinking about this. I think they will go with almost all players who played against Tonga, with a couple of others they can slide in. Otherwise people are coming in wihtout a match for a month, which is damn tough, particularly in the forwards.
Still gutted we lost Luke Jacobson. That kid's got a massive future

All the scenarios say that Reiko is toast for this game? I find that a little hard to believe. In saying that, I really want Bridge to start
I think they'll pick him. Wingers can come up to speed more easily in training I reckon - it's not so physical out there.
He's still favourite to be top try scorer (just in front of Sevu Reece) ...

His powder is the driest, so I guess it's time to let him loose!!!
