Blues 2020
-
Even the Blues’ other most significant signing for 2020, Beauden Barrett, had never won a Super Rugby game in the Waikato, with his old side the Hurricanes also breaking their duck earlier this season and recording a first win in Hamilton since 2007.
The one man in the Blues who had tasted victory against the Chiefs in the Waikato, however, is new recruit Carter, and he wasted no time motivating his new club ahead of their win, according to wing Caleb Clarke.

If England didn't know about this before, they sure will now. Thanks NZ Herald.
Fozzie better cap him this year.

Christ I can't even imagine how everyone on here would react if he went to England.

They still have those players outside the caps, a team could chuck a fortune at him, if they wanted. In NZ he would be getting SFA, really it is the lure of the black jersey vs $$$

"When the decision comes it will come easy but for the moment I'm just focusing on the Blues.
Youd think he has his mind made up already, and TBH the timing couldn't be better with Read retiring, he is a ready made fit to get the call up whenever international rugby returns...
-
@taniwharugby I certainly hope so!
-
He'll have to severe his ties with Fiji before he goes to England.

Doesn’t show his left arm

I bet Hansen and Foster are disgusted looking at this pic. Coaches aren't supposed to be in that kind of shape.
Get that man a plate of sausage rolls !

Blues have already sold 10,000 tickets for the Chiefs match. That's almost a month away - July 26th

I see they are also running the same promo as the Canes game - free child with a GA ticket. It's a Sunday game too. Local derby. Should be another big crowd.

We're setting the standard. 42k and then nearly 30k for a wet Saturday night. Shows that Aucklander's aren't apathetic after all - give us a bandwagon to jump on and we're on like kong.
It's awesome, I'm super stoked for the franchise.

Looks like Dan Carter will be playing club rugby for Southbridge this week.

Interesting article
-
From the article on the All Blacks website about BB going to Japan:
“Our focus is fully on the current campaign but we have plans for next year without Beaudy. He will be a big loss but that is countered with what he is doing on and off the field this year, and that we get him for two more years.
“We have Otere Black playing terrific rugby, and Harry Plummer who has been coming off the bench, while we will have Stephen Perofeta back next season from injury.”
I thought he'd be available later in the SRA season, but this seems to suggest he's out for the entire season. Or am I reading too much into this?

He's out for the SRA season. Was replaced by Dan Carter.

I wonder if Blues are eyeing up Zarn Sullivan to take Beady's spot in the 2021 Blues squad.

That makes sense. He has plenty of potential. Hopefully he gets a few starts for Auckland.
He looks like a player that could spend some time at fullback too? There's still Heighton and Page. Maybe Carter will extend his time at the Blues?
-
“It was [no surprise],” MacDonald told Stuff. “We knew last year this clause and this option were there and we expected it to happen. We’ve been planning for 2021 without him, hence having a lot of young 10s there and having guys like Dan Carter around to help build our depth. “We’ve invested in Harry Plummer, Stephen Perofeta and Otere Black. We feel comfortable we’ve got our bases covered pretty well. It also played a part in our selection around keeping Otes at 10 and Beaudy coming in at fullback, knowing the big picture as well.
-
The BB contract is weird. He had a 'break', then return to SR, then presumably play tests then a Japan 'sabbatical'?
-
That also explains why Black has been playing 10. Seems to be well handled by all involved.
-
Wonder who moves into Beauden’s house while he’s away.Brotherly love, and all that!
-
@KiwiMurph yea I reckon Zarn will be a fully fledged, card carrying Blues player next year. Be interesting to see what happens at M10 level for Auckland. Zarns emergence and the signing of Simon Hickey might see Plummer considering his M10 options.
-
I think Plummer is a midfielder who can cover 10 now.
MacDonald made comments recently about his frame being suited to midfield etc
-
@Nogusta I'd be suprised if Plummer was let go just like that but you seem to be hinting that he's leaving haha. Don't see the need to sign Hickey tbh.
-
@African-Monkey I think Plummer is still first choice until the other options can prove they're better than him.
Hickey should be treated as the 3rd option IMO.

Yep for sure , the void at 15 will be far easier to fill than if they structured things around him playing 10.
Makes perfect sense now

It would have made more sense for Barrett to stay with the Canes until after his year in Japan. Unless he was unimpressed with the coaching he was getting in Wellington (very likely even though he made all the right noises when he moved). But now hes stuck at FB when maybe he would be better focusing on 1st 5. Whereas the Blues would be silly to move Blacdk to the reserves

Or possibly he decided to live in Auckland for family reasons and then decided the commute was a little far
-
Exactly.
-
Carter looking good in his club game so far.
-
@ACT-Crusader you'd hope hte world's best ten ever, highest test point scorer and multi World Player of the year would look good in a club game haha
-
@Machpants sure, but never a guarantee when test players go down a few levels that they will dominate or even play well.
