2019 Cricket ODI WC

@Chris-B Munro is rubbish. Kane and Ross looked good with the bat. If we get swinging conditions like that again in the tournament proper, Boult is going to terrorize batsmen. Neesham also went well. Less said about Southee and Santner the better. To be fair though, India looked really flat in the field.
-
@Mokey I was flicking between channels - missed Santner's first couple of overs - so only saw Jadeja smacking him. CdG was also a handful in those conditions.
I reckon Neesham is going to be a key player - if he goes well, I think we'll go well. If he's a bust, we probably don't make the play-offs. He's really the man we need to ice the batting cake and take some wickets through the middle overs.
I thought it had been decided that Nicholls opening was the way forward. To be really harsh on Munro - you can go away and find some form, but you can't go away and find talent - and he's just not quite good enough.

I think the Neesh can be justifiably fucked off he didn’t make the last World Cup too. Obviously Elliot performed heroics in his place but Neesham is a potential star in both disciplines if he is in form.

@Chris-B Yep. If Munro is going to open (and he really shouldn't be) then we MUST have 3 4 5 6 all firing. Guptill can also be inconsistent, although he usually puts on a few before he gets out to a dumb shot. At least four batsmen making a decent score, plus tight bowling and tight fielding and we have a chance. But if our openers fail then Kane or Ross has a bad day, we are gonna be a bit farked.
-
@MN5 With the ball, Jimmy just can't seem to bowl a consistent line - I don't know why not, it can't be that hard. Even last night when he was picking up wickets he was regularly drifting down leg.
@Mokey I'm far from convinced that Nicholls opening is the answer, but he's hardly had a chance to convince me. (Will Young might have been, but he's going to be watching it on telly, like me). But, from what I can see - the preferred team is going to be:
Guptill, another opener, Kane, Ross, Latham, Neesham, CdG, Santner, Matt Henry, Ferguson, Boult
So either Nicholls is opening or he's not playing - as with Munro. But, surely Nicholls should be first cab off the rank for the early games.
-
@Chris-B We will probably start the WC with Guptill, Nicholls, Kane, Ross, Neesham, Blundell, CdG, Santner, Henry, Ferg, Boult. I like the idea of Neesham moving up to five in the batting order.
Munro is a lower order batsman and a pinch hitter at best in ODIs. He's a bit of a wasted spot in the squad when Will Young would have been the better option even if he was 2019 CWC's version of Tom Latham.
I can see Latham relinquishing the gloves to open the batting with Guptill, especially if his broken finger isn't fully healed but I have faith in Nicholls doing a good job. -

That wouldn't be the worst plan. Blundell did well in the recent series vs Oz. Hadn't really occurred to me as a possibility, but it's got merit!

So we dismissed India for 179
Boult is going to trouble a lot of people on English conditions with the new ball.
Meanwhile in the other warmup game Steve Smith has scored a century vs England
Our bowlers were impressive, considering no Starc, Hazelwood, or Cummins. Behrendorff had it on a string.
England also a bit cocky after their warm up series against a very poor Pakistan side.
Those conditions for Boult were very good. It had been dry all week and quite warm on Friday then Friday evening enough light rain appeared to freshen the wicket and green it up.
You can bet the grounds men will be very careful now. England will prefer flat tracks and go for a strategy of 380 beats 360 -

Mokes ... any team where the openers and 3 and 4 fail are going to struggle ... unless you have Michael Bevan batting at 6 or 7 ...

Was it mentioned that Afghanistan beat Pakistan?
Puts England’s pumping of them into perspective.

Or they are setting themselves up for the punt!

Just gotta hope that the Cricket Gods smile and at least one of the top six scores huge each game. Unlike other BC squads in the past the talent and ability is there for this to happen.

Our only hope is that one of the openers just gets rolling, and scores massively. Unfortunately, it didn't work in the 1996 knockouts with Harris and Germon, and I'm not sure it'll get there now Quality batting lineups with modern bats, pitches and grounds can chase some massive scores.

I'll say it now, anything less than the semis will be a massive disappointment.
This Black Caps team is fucken good, unfortunately I just think others are that little bit better when it counts.

Whilst this post is pretty accurate in the past I still stand by everything else I wrote. We have four genuine worldbeaters in this form of the game and a bunch of really decent support for them.
The much maligned Munro aside there's basically no deadweight in the team either.
