2020 All Blacks Squad
-
It will be interesting to see who will get the nod as the starting THP after the RWC, with long serving Owen Franks off to Northampton.
Ofa-T and Laulala are the obvious choices but I think Tyrell Lomax could be the man. He has made a lot of progress this year and looks like a young Carl Hayman. His physicality cannot be questioned and he is not subject to brain explosions as Ofa-T is.
And there is Atu Moli. How will he recover from his injuries is the big question. -

@gt12 From the article.
Angus Ta'avo and Atu Moli are also signed for next year. The front row is well covered.

And does he have the height to weight to play number 8?

They are shaping to give the 2012 class of debutants a lot of money going into their 9-12 AB seasons. I'm not sure some of these are wise investments if funds are low; particularly Coles, Smith and if Beauden is asking top dollar in the country.
-
I'm fascinated by how they try to work out the value of the contracts they offer to these players. BBBR must be more valuable than Whitelock, but how about Barrett versus Mounga? Personally, I be putting a bit of money in front of Goodhue right now too.

I 100% agree with Angus, but Atu Moli has done absolutely nothing to warrant selection. Lomax is not the inform THP, Laulala is looking good.

Hansen (and Henry before him) really saw the value of grizzled veterans. I think the blend of half vets, and half enthusiastic youth is a tried formula.
On another note, it's great to see quality new faces popping up in every Super campaign. Will Jordan, Tom Robinson - and others - who could easily transition to the top level over the next few years.

What do you guys think will be the 6, 7 and 8 aswell as the reserve loosie come World Cup time? Aswell as what do you think for the 2020 squad.
I think
World Cup
6. Frizell
7. Savea
8. Read
20. Cane2020
6. Frizell
7. Cane
8. Savea
20. Ioane -
If, and it's a big if, cane makes the cup he starts, ardie will be on the bench. Outside that I've no idea EDIT: and Read at 8 obviously. Ardie might be the 7 instead of Cane if he had performed like the last game, in the game before vs the Crusaders.
-
6 Read
7 cane
8 Ioani20 savea

No comment. I've already been banned enough times this month. Although the inclusion of the once apparently absolutely shit A Savea makes me chuckle.

And SBW is badly broken again. Six weeks with knee surgery. His chances of making the RWC squad are looking increasingly slim.
-
How many games of rugby has SBW actually played in the past 15 months?
Five for the ABs (in at least one of which he hobbled off early), two or three for the Blues this year, not many for the Blues last year?
A dozen?
-
@Chester-Draws assuming they are open about it just being arthroscopy, this is not a major surgery and could well be back up and running in a couple of weeks.
As a non-elite athlete, I was back playing to my high level 4 weeks post arthroscopy.

I think badly broken is overstating it. It’s minor surgery that will sideline him for about a month.
Blues head coach Leon MacDonald said: "Whatever he decides to do and puts his mind to, he sort of makes happen. If he still wants to keep playing later on he's the sort of guy you would never write off.
"He's a pretty determined guy and this year he really wants to make the World Cup squad and be a part of that. So he's pretty driven to make sure he recovers well from this and gets back on the field." -
Coltman has signed through to 2022:
All Blacks hooker Liam Coltman re-signs with Highlanders

Which wouldn't matter much, if he had been playing regularly.
In this case it's one more month out, minimum. The newspaper said six weeks (plus the two since the injury, makes eight weeks off). Then he'll not be at full fitness for a while.
I was always in the pro-SBW camp, but it's got past ridiculous. I believe the term is "food bill".

Nathan Harris has re-signed with NZR and the Chiefs for 2020 and 2021:
-
Richie Mo'unga currently looks like the first-choice First-Five for 2019:
Still unclear what is going to happen to the following All Blacks whose deals run out in 2019.
Brodie Retallick:
Jack Goodhue:
Beauden Barrett:
Jordie Barrett:
Sonny Bill Williams:
Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi:
Kane Hames:
Shannon Frizell:
Waisake Naholo:
Matt Todd:
Luke Romano:
Sam Whitelock (Could take up one-year extension) -
@sparky hopefully Beaudy follows his bro and signs an extension with Canes and NZ rugby through to the next WC.
-
@Canes4life Has Jordie already re-signed with the Canes?
-
I thought Jordie Barrett signed a one year extension in 2018 just for 2019 I haven't heard he's re-signed anywhere as yet.
-
@Chris nevermind I thought he had, sheesh I hope they both sign then or the Canes are stuffed. Guys like Tiatia and Toala just seem a bit average when you look at the Crusaders roster.
-
@Chris Yep, only a one year extension.
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=12091127
-
@Canes4life Geez, Toala is only just 20 years old, has played 4 Mitre 10 Cup games, hasn't played a single SR game yet, and you already call him average? He's a huge prospect! The question is, will he get the opportunities to grow and develop as a SR player, or will he waste his time at the Canes and only watch on from the stands every week? Like a few other players ...

Sam Whitelock (Could take up one-year extension)You mean the broken guy who pretty much played like shit when he actually did take the field ?
As always I'm sure they'll pull out all the stops and cater for all his needs.
-
So Jordie only took up a 1 year contract because he wants game time at 12? But Laumape is in such good form it seems unlikely he'll get much more this year or any next year if he signs on again. But he also says he won't play for another SR team. What's his options then? Stick with the Canes and play out of his favoured position? Or head overseas at such a young age?
-
@Stargazer yeah I'd say he's better off switching teams but I'm pretty sure he's quite adamant at not switching.
-
@Stargazer probably more underwhelming is the phrase I should of used. I actually like the look of the kid after seeing him in that pre season game but will he become just another P Umaga Jensen or J Lowe and get next to no game time because of guys like Tiatia - who in my opinion just seems to be a bit average for Super Rugby.
-
@Yeetyaah he's adamant on being a Cane so I will be very suprised if he moved. I've mentioned this many times but will say it again, if the Canes want to win games then keep picking Laumape at 12, if they want to win championships they need to pick J Barrett at 12 IMO.
-
@Canes4life I'd also be surprised if he went to another NZ team. But isn't he unproven in SR at 12 compared to Laumape?
-
@Yeetyaah that one game where he started at 12 this year he looked rock solid and alot more natural in being that extra playmaker. His love of physicality suits him being in that position aswell. He's obviously unproven because he hasn't been given much of a chance there to show his prowess.
-
@Canes4life I remember seeing him be named to start but didn't catch the performance. Awkward situation for him (and NZR if they wan't to resign him) I suppose.
