I think you mean the Duke of Wellington , Nelson was Trafalgar.
Oops, sorry. Getting my historical references all askew. I originally thought about the Battle of Hastings, then realised the poms lost that one!!!

A Kiwi link to the 3 Lions. Teaching the Kiwis mental toughness?? LOL

@canefan well we had a shorter period of pain and anguish
I guess it was different for England as they weren't clearly the best (or among the better) team between world cups. Tyranny of low expectations.

Lukaku produced another stunning Heskey performance.
Lazy good for nothing.
Combined with rubbish crossing it was never going to be easy to beat France with 10 men.
And Mbuti (sp) can get fucked with his Neymars

The last time these two met in a big WC match it was the Battle of Agincourt that was referenced.
(Too many on the non-French side at Waterloo weren't English -- all the Scots for a start, but also Dutch, Belgians, Hanoverians.)
Trafalgar would do

@mikethesnow Lukaku was very poor. Seems to have zero predatory instinct in the box. The time the ball came over and the defender missed it and it hit Romelu and he looked surprised. You're the bloody centre-forward, your job is to be ready to do something with the ball when it arrives.
Very professional performance from the French - lots of hard work by their midfield to crowd the Belgian play-makers and Kante as usual was making a pest of himself.

Significant contigent of Welsh Longbowmen in Henry V's army at Agincourt.

Regardless of who wins this evening, France remain hot favourites IMHO.
That being said, an England victory in regulation with no injuries and no suspensions is the best scenario for a competitive Final with the outside chance of a startling upset.
Kane will put far more pressure on the French defence than Lukaku did.
Croatia have had a tough road to the SF / F and will have a day less rest than France.

Starting to see the calls for Kante for Golden Ball. I think Oliver Khan would have been the last non-forward to win, and can't think of too many others.
If he did then the last time the golden ball winner was also a champion looks to have been 1994 (Romario for Brazil).

Lloris would be a good shout too

Good call Catograde.
I'm doubtful of counting the Welsh at Agincourt because they were subjects of the English, not British, crown. However lots of the "English" were French speakers born in France.
It's impressive how few purely England vs France battles there are. Sluys?

Battle of Hastings?
Both sides ended up being English.
This is getting very complicated.
I'd say we would have to go all the way back to 1992 and the Battle of Parc de Princes and two sent off for the French.
