Joe Ravouvou, a sevens regular, wasn't included as he does not hold a New Zealand passport. -
So Ravouvou is not eligible. I wonder whether Masirewa's situation is similar? Is he a Kiwi?
I'm not surprised Nanai-Seturo isn't in the squad. He has talent, but still a lot of work-ons. Far from ready for the highest level in sevens. For the same reason, I'm not surprised Clarke didn't make it further than reserve.
Baker, while I can't stand the guy, he can be very good and he's experienced. What he lacks is consistency. He's never consistently good. Let's hope 14 and 15 April are his good days.
McGarvey-Black is a surprise due to his short career, but he has already shown a lot more than Nanai and Clarke. He's a good playmaker. He may be the find of the season.
Anyway, the men's teams must win their pool to make the semi-finals. NZ is in a pool with Canada, Kenya and Zambia. While Canada has been disappointing this season, Kenya has proven to be a handful. Based on the last two tournaments, the AB7s will IMO struggle to make the semis.
In the women's tournament, there are only 2 pools and the top 2 teams of each pool will play the semis. NZ is in a pool with Canada, South Africa and Kenya, with only Canada being a top team. So the BFs should make the semis, with England and Australia the most likely contenders from the other pool. I can see an NZ - Australia final, with the Aussies as favourites.

The Masirewas have been in NZ a while but that is no guarantee of nationality.
Mika Vukona has a Fijian passport and will captain the Tall Blacks at the Comm Games. Vidiri played for NZ in 1998 and I think he had a Fijian passport too.

Stannard in hospital after alleged 'coward punch'
Aussie Sevens captain James Stannard remains in a stable condition, but has been diagnosed with a fractured skull, after a one-punch attack on Friday morning.Stannard was with teammates and team management when he was allegedly punched in the head outside a Coogee kebab shop on Coogee Bay Rd at 3:10am on Friday morning, in what police say was an unprovoked assault, after a conversation between Stannard and a 22-year-old British man. The 35-year-old hit his head on the footpath as a result of the assault, and was taken to St Vincents hospital,.where he remains in a stable condition, despite his injuries. Though the 22-year-old man fled the scene, coach Andy Friend and Stannard's teammates Lewis Holland and Ben O'Donnell were able to detain the man until police arrived.Stannard, his teammates and team management and familthad been at the Crowne Plaza for a farewell dinner for coach Friend ...Popular figure Stannard was recently appointed Aussie Sevens captain for the Commonwealth Games, replacing injured skipper Lewis Holland, but it is unclear whether he will feature in the tournament. -

Rising rugby prospect Etene Nanai-Seturo is set to get a second chance to make his mark at the Commonwealth Games. The highly rated teenager was initially left out of the New Zealand Sevens squad, but he has received a late call-up to the Gold Coast after injuries hit the Kiwi team. It's understood young playmaker Ngarohi McGarvey-Black has been forced to return to New Zealand after injuring himself during a recent warm-up match against Australia. Nanai-Seturo was previously involved in a tug-of-war between New Zealand Rugby and the Warriors, with the Warriors receiving what is thought to be a six-figure compensation payment in exchange for Nanai-Seturo swapping codes. He then impressed on the sevens circuit without doing enough to make the initial 12-man Games squad, but the unfortunately timed injury to McGarvey-Black has opened up the door for the 18-year-old.Neither of Clarke or Nanai-Seturo is a playmaker, but they still have Koroi, Knewstubb and Baker for that role. So not sure whether Clarke has taken McG-B's spot, or Nanai-Seturo.
You've got to feel for McG-B; I hope he recovers in time for the World Cup Sevens.

Commonwealth Games: All Blacks Sevens lose Caleb Clarke for the Gold Coast
All Blacks Sevens player Caleb Clarke has been ruled out of the Commonwealth Games. Newshub understands the 19 year-old had emergency surgery on the Gold Coast on Monday for a burst appendix. Clarke, who was 13th man for New Zealand is set to be sidelined for two to three weeks. A source told Newshub that Clark was 'extremely gutted' at missing out on a shot at claiming gold. Etene Nanai-Seturo is set to get a second chance to make his mark after he was initially left out of the New Zealand Sevens squad for the Gold Coast. It is understood he will join the squad as Clarke's replacement.Not sure whether Nanai-Seturo is Clarke's replacement or McGarvey-Black's. They'll probably call up another player.

Injury and illness have forced changes to both men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams days out from the start of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. In the men’s team, young rising stars Ngarohi McGarvey Black and Caleb Clarke have both been ruled out. McGarvey Black sustained an ankle injury in a warm up game against Australia last Thursday and has returned home. Clarke, the team’s travelling reserve, was diagnosed with an appendicitis over the weekend and is undergoing surgery today before returning to New Zealand. He is being supported by the New Zealand Team medical staff and his family. Etene Nanai-Seturo has been confirmed as a replacement for McGarvey Black, while a decision on Clarke’s replacement will be made in due course. Kat Whata-Simpkins has been ruled out of the women’s rugby sevens team with a leg injury. Commonwealth Games: Black Ferns Sevens struck by mumps
Black Ferns Sevens star Ruby Tui has contracted mumps on the eve of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Tui, who was part of the silver-medal team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, is with the women’s sevens team at their pre-games camp on the Sunshine Coast in Australia, before checking into the athlete's village. She is currently in isolation and being supported by a New Zealand team doctor, who has travelled to the Sunshine Coast to be with her. The New Zealand team medical lead confirmed the case this morning and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 medical and public health teams have been advised. The wider team will remain in isolation at their camp while further assessments are made on players and support staff. The team had been scheduled to come into the village on Wednesday, but will now remain in camp until Sunday. The New Zealand team medical team lead and other staff also travelled to support the team on the Sunshine Coast today. -
