Invitational, provincial, local & school sevens tournaments

Recruitment is being done through a mixture of schools comps and high performance groups at the moment. Most possible players are well identified anyway and the younger ones will be in NZSS selections at World Schools.
Condors is still a pathway but has the problem of being school based and not all good players get to play in it. -
@Crucial From the NZR side, I understand that, but what about Kiwis who like to watch these tournaments? And players, who aren't in that pathway, who just liked playing in these (regional & central) tournaments, repping their province?
Same with Jock Hobbs U19 tournament. Gone. I really think it's a loss.

Yeah it’s a loss. I was explaining how it is currently working, not condoning the loss of the previous set up.
I have no idea why the provincial sevens stuff hasn’t come back.
In the old days it used to be a weekend tournament with Titch on the sideline in his deckchair -
The Condor 7s are this weekend:
Open Senior Championship Sat 3 - Sun 4 December 2022
(Invitational) Senior Cup Mon 5 - Tue 6 December 2022It's not broadcast on Sky, but I'm reading in comments on Facebook that Sideline live are going to stream it. Nothing on their website or social media to suggest that this is true. Could still happen, but Sideline live isn't the same quality anymore since it changed hands about 2 years ago.
The draws are on the Condor 7s website:
-
The Condor Sevens will indeed be streamed on Sideline live. They expect you to pay $19.95 to watch the tournament (I think it's $7.95 to watch the streaming from one field). Personally, I'm not going to fork out nearly 20 dollars for a two-day school sevens tournament.
The World School Sevens in two weeks will be on Sky.

I just came to post the same in case you missed it 😀

Just reading that Hamilton BHS won the Condors again (beating Kelston 22-21). Seven in a row now.
I will be curious to see the Condor team as none of the Hamilton BHS players will be able to play due to their World Schools Festival commitments. That tournament runs from Dec 11-18.

Are they entering their own team at World Schools?

No, they are attending the XVs tournament in Thailand.

So I am still guessing that the NZ Schools teams listed as entries in the WS7s are these teams. Mind you these 'tournament teams' are usually a best of announcement rather than a selection for another team.
It has all been a bit confusing as some players and coaches have been told that NZ Schools are not the Condors tournament teams and to hold off finalising squads until NZSS are selected. That's why there will be a lot of last minute shuffling of players through NZSS/ NZ Cavaliers/ NZ Barbarians etc etc. Many players have options being held open for them.
Guess it will all become clear over the next few days. -

It follows the example of the NZ Barbarians Schools team in XVs. The past few squads also had club players who had already left school.
I guess they are now more age grade (U18) teams than a schools' teams, despite the name of the tournament.

Yeah, and you forget how young some of these players still are. Smith, Hutchinson and Williams were all in the NZ U19s. Both Smith and Wrampling-Alec were in the Chiefs U20s this year and could be for another 1-2 years.

Same as last year then.
I think they decided to make it U18 and attended school during the year.
