Invitational, provincial, local & school sevens tournaments

The Provincial Sevens (Blake Park, Mt Maunganui) were played today. The tournament wasn't televised or livestreamed, and all I've seen is tweets from the BOP Twitter account.

The Waikato men's team have won the Cup (Tane Tarawera) final against Counties Manukau (after extra time): 24 - 19.
The Plate (Tane Whakaari) Final was won by the Samoa Barbarians, who beat Auckland 14 - 7.
The Bowl (Putauaki) Final resulted in a 19 - 7 win for Canterbury against Ta$man.
The Shield (Mauao) Final went to BOP Academy after beating Manawatu 14 - 10.

There were no finals in the women's tournament; teams played 4 games each. Manawatu was the only unbeaten team, so I assume they can be considered the winners of the tournament. Wellington and Auckland both won three of their games, but both lost their game against Manawatu. They didn't play each other but Wellington's wins were generally with higher points differentials (total +63) than Auckland's (total +25).

The National Sevens are next week (for the last time in Rotorua).

2017 was the last time the Central Coast 7s was held. That's a pity, because it was a good warm-up tournament for the World Series, a great opportunity for non-core nations in Oceania to play against a number of core teams and - at least for NZ - a good tournament to give the development teams a run. The question is now whether another organiser/city will step into the void left behind by the CC7s and organise a similar tournament in November. Personally, I think Auckland would be a good candidate because of its large Pacific population.

Quite a few upsets this weekend, but not Waikato. Again both the men's and women's team in the Cup Final.

Manawatu takes out the women's Cup Final, and Waikato the men's. Both finals were close and exciting, but I think the right teams won, especially after watching their other games. Ta$man have been a great surprise, though.

I've seen some great sevens this weekend; can't wait to find out which players will pick up the remaining spots in the BF7s and AB7s squads.
