Oh, I had that a couple of times. Definitely below Ranfurly
Some old NZ beer cans: http://www.canmuseum.com/Search.aspx?PageNo=1&StartRowIndex=1&Brand=&Flavor=66&Volume=&Country=173&Year=&Description=
(Maybe I was thinking of NZ Lager?? But the reviews for it seem too good)Not Leopard either? Used to be called Shield Snorters Draft I think
Leopard wasn't HB Draught, as @Bovidae notes it was the regional beer back in the Bay (more highly thought of than the ones being discussed here). HB Draught was the same beer as Canterbury Draught but with a different label.
When at CIT the guy next to me in the halls of residence was mad on the stuff and vexed that the tote didn't stock it. I didn't mind it either when over that way
CIT? Tote? Leopard or HB/Canterbury Draught?
Central Institute of Technology (Vic had a business campus out there) Tote = Totora Lodge which is next to CIT (Upper Hut).
He was mad on HBD.
Ah right. Not sure why anyone would be made on HBD. Was he mad himself?
Utterly!!! I'm not kidding. Hopeless on the booze. Would always want a fight and he couldn't.
Mourned Kurt Cobains death for what seemed a month.

@dogmeat I can't quite remember but I think only one of Lion or DB owned Leopard (or at least by the 80s it was). It was a regular class trip visit (breweries, Freezing Works and Pizza Hutt were the main class trips in the 80s I think) and my Dad used to drink there with mates on occasion and I'd have to go in and grab him. I always looked forward to going there when I was old enough to drink (mainly because it was basically free) but sadly it closed around that time (when it closed some 'craft beer' breweries opened up including Red Rooster which was popular in the 90s).
I don't think the later craft beer was officially associated with the old Leopard Brewery.

@nepia Definitely no connection between the two Leopard Breweries.
A JV between the two mega brewers sounds weird as but that's my recall. Might have had two many Leopards. As a youngster i.e. 9 or 10 that was the beer I was given with Sunday lunch
-
@dogmeat From the web:
"The site of Leopard Brewery, Hastings St, Hastings.
The brewery was sited in Hastings Street and on the corner of Ellison Road and the corner with St Aubyn Street East. Phone number 4318.
The brewery was known as "Burton Brewery" in earlier days but was changed because of confusion with a brewery with a similar name in Palmerston North in the 1950s to "Leopard Brewery".
In 1880 the site was under the name of Ellis, the mayor of Hastings. Edward Newbigin bought the brewery in 1894, keeping it in the family until 1957, when it was sold to Malayan Breweries in Singapore, a subsidary of Heineken Brewery, Holland.
In the 1990s the brewery was closed down by New Zealand Breweries who once had the Heineken agency, then sold it off to Dominion Breweries, as they had made a successful new brand called Steinlager.
In later years the brewery was disassembled and the site became Mitre 10 Mega Store until they moved to a site in Nelson Park, Hastings, and after a few years the area was cut into three sites, one being Warehouse Stationery, another a furniture warehouse, the other awaiting a tenant in 2015."

roadie!!
Absolutely.
Quick roadie story. Did this earlier in the year during a stinking hot day and purchased a single big bot of Waikato. Got caught in roadworks at a passing lane so we were two wide and kind of forgot about the drinking thing and took a swig. I was right next to a plain cop. He beeped and got me to wind down the window and asked what the hell I was doing.
I told him it was only a roadie and he politely asked me to stop drinking it in a 'traffic jam' to which I obliged.Once I was going through Tirau he did pull me over to breath test me which I obviously passed.
Mentioned I should be a bit more subtle with the roadie.

Can't do roadies here anymore. It's now illegal to have an open container of alcohol. That includes passengers depending on the State.

I imagine it will be the same here soon. You can't have a open beer in a vehicle in a no alcohol zone. So if I had driven through one of those zones, I could have been arrested.
-
@mariner4life said in Beer thread:
@hooroo i can honestly say i have never had a beer while driving!
You country blokes
I have a 40 minute drive each way. Sometimes on a Friday after a hard week, the drive deserves a beer.
Nothing wrong with it unless people think nothing should be drunk in a car (Coffee, soda etc)
-
@mariner4life cant say that I have either...my old man used to have a few big bottles of Lion Red on the way home from golf when I drove...I was 13
-
@mariner4life in the olden days you would have a crate of 750 mill bottles on the seta or floor beside you ands work your way through them on a long drive
What with that, the state of the roads and cars it was no wonder there was carnage on the highways
