I'm surprised that Duffie has been elevated so much in some posters estimations. He's playing well but I'm not sure he's in ready to leapfrog a guy like Reiko and I don't think he should be promoted on the basis of being considered 'safe'. Our so called safe guys like BFA actually have crazy x factor. And a guy like Rieko is actually pretty 'safe' in his decision making anyway.
I like Nanai, he looks uncommonly good at times, however, I kind of think he should be playing for Samoa and not us.
He's not just "safe", he's a bloody good player. His aerial ability alone makes him an excellent test prospect. Ultimately you have to look at what will be the best fit for the abs. I like Rieko, but Duffie looks more the complete footballer at this stage.
I wasn't saying he was just safe.
You said the argument is that he be promoted on the basis of being safe. That is most certainly not the case.
I was responding to the posts in the thread, not giving my assessment of him.
Fair enough if you were responding to others. I'm not a fan because he's a "safe white boy" but because he's amazing in the air, has an eye for gaps, is strong in the tackle, makes good decisions and seems to have a top rugby brain. All of those factors are gold at test level.

Talk about shiny new toy! Duffie is certainly showing to be a handy enough super player, but geez there's a long list of outside backs to get through for the ABs and he's had form in less than a dozen games...
Ahem NMS 2015.
Oh well that settles it then. I mean he leapfrogged shitloads of players right...
Er yes.
The point is he was selected for the abs on the basis of one very good Super season.
When the cupboard was bare. Great point...
Yes that's right, there were no other wingers in NZ at the time. He just walked in by default. Seriously Bones.

Yeah Bones ffs

@Bones Yeah suprised with all the Duffie pushing for ABs popping up. I thought my brother being Matt Duffie's number 1 fan had hacked multiple accounts on here haha.
Having said that he has come a long way from when he started last season. Solid Super Rugby player yes, but I'd be shocked if he ever comes close to an ABs call up.
Aaactually I think he's in the conversation. And I'm quite conservative in my bright new shiny thing fascination.

It doesn't take much for a player to get a chance. Duffie is doing everything he needs to get into the squad.
I'm loath to say any player can't make it after five injuries saw Scott Hamilton make it. At least Duffie is better than bubbles.
How did that hat taste?

So at the time there was a massive stock of outside backs that NMS leapfrogged?
-
dont see alot of those kinds of tries in Union, maybe thats what confused the TMO. this aint Loigue bro! ...didnt see the game, but yeah, how was that not awarded?
-
@taniwharugby Because it's in Austraya....
-
If there is to be no Dagg I would feel a lot better with Duffie on the right wing than Naholo. I don't know why, but I don't trust Naholo.

Ayoub
-
@Crazy-Horse Why the lack of trust in Naholo? Is it because he is more often than not injured?

Well halfway through the Super season BFA was the incumbent in that position and you also had Charles P, Naholo and even Jane.
-
@Crazy-Horse Yep, know what you mean. There are so many wing/FB options to choose from Nanai, Bridge, Duffie, Aso, Tamanivalu or Ioane.

Dagg and Piutau missing selection fpr the RWC were big ones.

Aso is too flawed to be so highly rated. Good with ball in hand, but he's a matador on defense and non-existent under the high ball. Had trouble defending at U20 level too, so it's been an ongoing thing for him for a few years.
It's not so prevalent this year, but he has had a tendency to go for too much with his option taking in the past.
@No-Quarter said in Brumbies v Blues:
I know it's been done to death but I am getting really annoyed at Nanai not starting every game, he's such an exciting player. If he doesn't get a fair go he should come to the Canes and enjoy running off the Barrett brother's shoulders all the way into the All Blacks.
He'd kill it at the Canes. With their efficient attack and ability to consistently create space and opportunities for their outsides, he'd go to town on teams. He has to do a lot for himself at the Blues, and does a pretty good job of it, but I'd say the Canes is as good a spot as anywhere to get the max out of an outside backs' attacking ability.
