I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not (normally when I background something with that line, it normally is), but can he fall foul of sports doping agencies for this? He's in-season on a bye week, allegedly caught red handed buying coke by the cops.
Even though he tests negative, do they have any rules or sanctions for it being in someone's possession? I imagine if a cyclist was found with a bag of PED's but tested negative that doping agencies would still have something to say about it.
Yes he's at the end of his career, and yes he's a knob. But he's still an active professional sportsman buying drugs. I'm a little bit surprised by how the media has reacted to this. Without opening a can of worms about league vs rugby players behaviour, because it's not my intention (and league players win hands down for being dicks) I imagine if it was a Kiwi league player caught doing the same thing that Rattue wouldn't be referring to him as a "victim".
Kiwi leaguies have a lot to learn from their Aussie counterparts about dickhead behaviour ( or else they're far better at hiding it )

Cocaine is listed as a stimulant on WADA's list of prohibited substances.
I'd say Racing or World Rugby would more likely ban him.
What punishment did Karmichael Hunt receive from Queensland/ARU on his supply and possession charge?
Presumably not as much punishment as that which Frank Pritchard meted out to him for turning his back on the kiwi jersey...
(6 weeks. Roughly half of what Ben Barba got, though he actually tested positive)

wasn't Ali there more in a mentor/minder type role for DC (although been playing a little too) so you'd think they'll can his contract?
-
@taniwharugby He has played ten games for them this season. Seems more than a role of minder to me.
Anyway, here are some of the WADA rules that would apply to Ali if he has indeed tested negative and they can prove that he bought the stuff for JOC. Obviously, this all doesn't apply if there is no final guilty verdict from a court. (JOC's case is different; I have not included the rules that would apply to him)
ARTICLE 2 ANTI-DOPING RULE VIOLATIONS The following constitute anti-doping rule violations: 2.6 Possession of a Prohibited Substance or a Prohibited Method 2.6.1 Possession by an Athlete In-Competition of any Prohibited Substance ... or Possession by an Athlete Out-of-Competition of any Prohibited Substance ... which is prohibited Out-of-Competition unless the Athlete establishes that the Possession is consistent with a Therapeutic Use Exemption (“TUE”) ... 2.6.2 Possession by an Athlete Support Person In-Competition of any Prohibited Substance ... or Possession by an Athlete Support Person Out-of-Competition of any Prohibited Substance ... which is prohibited Out-of-Competition in connection with an Athlete, Competition or training, unless the Athlete Support Person establishes that the Possession is consistent with a TUE ... 2.7 Trafficking or Attempted Trafficking in any Prohibited Substance or Prohibited Method
2.9 Complicity Assisting, encouraging, aiding, abetting, conspiring, covering up or any other type of intentional complicity involving an anti-doping rule violation, Attempted anti-doping rule violation ... 3.2 Methods of Establishing Facts and Presumptions 3.2.4 The facts established by a decision of a court or professional disciplinary tribunal of competent jurisdiction which is not the subject of a pending appeal shall be irrebuttable evidence against the Athlete or other Person to whom the decision pertained of those facts unless the Athlete or other Person establishes that the decision violated principles of natural justice.
10.2 Ineligibility for Presence, Use or Attempted Use or Possession of a Prohibited Substance or Prohibited Method The period of Ineligibility for a violation of Article 2.1, 2.2 or 2.6 shall be as follows, subject to potential reduction or suspension pursuant to Article 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6: 10.2.1 The period of Ineligibility shall be four years where: 10.2.1.1 The anti-doping rule violation does not involve a Specified Substance, unless the Athlete or other Person can establish that the anti-doping rule violation was not intentional. 10.2.1.2 The anti-doping rule violation involves a Specified Substance and the Anti-Doping Organization can establish that the antidoping rule violation was intentional. 10.2.2 If Article 10.2.1 does not apply, the period of Ineligibility shall be two years. 10.3 Ineligibility for Other Anti-Doping Rule Violations The period of Ineligibility for anti-doping rule violations other than as provided in Article 10.2 shall be as follows ... 10.3.3 For violations of Article 2.7 or 2.8, the period of Ineligibility shall be a minimum of four years up to lifetime Ineligibility, depending on the seriousness of the violation. 10.3.4 For violations of Article 2.9, the period of Ineligibility imposed shall be a minimum of two years, up to four years, depending on the seriousness of the violation.

It beggars belief that he would buy the stuff just for JOC. Both are likely to be household names to those who love rugby in France. It's not like JOC got some guy who played reserve grade club rugby to do it for him so no one would recognise him.
It would seem to me that they're both on a bender, JOC has already had some coke and AW is looking to get amongst it as well. Either that, or AW is the worlds best friend, to take one for the team like that...

Yeah that was a load of shit. They hired him as a media liaison last year as they wanted to reserve him for this year. They couldn't contract him as a player though. Roster was full or salary cap or something. So he trains with them then as soon as they have space, they signed him to play. It's why the Goosen thing is a bit hypocritical of them. I don't recall him holding any press conferences , thank God, or writing any articles for their website.

He did sideline comments during the France /Scotland game for the 6 Nations broadcast and was actually OK at it.

That's probably more to do with Ratpoo and how many clicks he calculates he'd get from whichever contrary view he publishes than any code war.

The problem with a famous guy saying he was buying it for a mate is that if they are really your mate they should come forward and take the heat off of you. If they don't then they're not really that good a mate are they, so you can probably just go ahead and name them.

Yup, and if he was indeed buying it for a "mate" who wasn't present, it would indicate that he obviously has a good working relationship with the coke dealer, otherwise why would he be brokering the deal on behalf, given how much he has to lose...
If I had a dollar for every person I locked up who blamed whatever illegal thing they had in their possession or action they'd just done on a mate, I'd almost be able to afford an All Blacks supporters jersey.

ah it's OK Ali, everyone is doing it.
