@barbarian it was funny listening to Melbourne sports radio this morning (SEN) and they have this "who's on the struggle bus this week" segment. They had Michael Cheika. They were ferrying stuck into his comments and didn't buy into the ABs are responsible for the clown cartoon. Yes it's a predominantly AFL radio station, but the morning guys know their sport beyond AFL and aren't like NRL folks that want to talk any other sport down to boost their one.
And I certainly agree with them.
At the same time, in QLD is writing "best thing for the game here" articles in relation to Cheika firing up.
No such thing as bad publicity?

I don't buy this "all publicity is good publicity" nonsense. I find it pretty ridiculous that the Aus coach being reported on in the press for acting like a petulant child can be construed as a good thing. Reckon that'll get more kids to sign up, get more people to buy Wallaby kit?
It shows the depths to which the game has fallen in Aus that this can somehow be viewed as a positive.
Oh yeah and if you want to criticise about sporting whines, try getting over bodyline first.

I think people are far more likely to tune in if there is genuine bad blood between the two sides, for sure.
Where here Cheika can be seen as a 'petulant child', in some quarters in Aus he is seen as finally throwing a punch back after years of being belted by NZ. Sure he went off the deep end a bit, but I think people would rather that than a meek 'they are the Champions' surrender.
And we'll get over Bodyline when you get over Underarm.

Throwing a punch back? C'mon, that's weak. Throwing a punch back is winning on the field not having a cry about a newspaper article. Its not about kowtowing to the abs it's about acting like a grown up. Surely even you see the difference.
You've got 50 years on us with bodyline plus a mini-series. Nice try though.

Oh bless, someone brought up 2007. How cute.

Hey someone brought up Bodyline, so 2007 seems like yesterday!

Biggest issue with having a polarising figure like Cheika is when it comes to sponsors. If Cheika insists on being the sole mouthpiece for the Wallabies and continues until the next round of sponsorship negotiations (Qantas up in 2019) it would be very possible to see that Qantas money turn into Tiger Airlines money if the results on the field continue and he is putting up this kind of performance.
I personally don't think he makes it to 2019 for a raft of reasons - not least of which is I've never seen a coach go off like that and have any sort of tenure.

actually, there are no longer pages, just one big long one....sheesh, get it right
You can set it to be pages. I did coz I confuse easily.

I'm not saying I agree with it, but that's how it has been perceived in some quarters. I think he went a bit too far, sure.
I'm sure there are some that think he's God, but I simply don't see how his behaviour is good for Australian rugby. It's bad enough that the team is losing and I don't see any benefit for the game from Cheika throwing his toys out of the cot.
One thing I'm not sure about is this "us vs them" attitude. I can't recall that ever being the modus operandi of the great Aus teams. I remember the difference when that 98 team took the field. They weren't all pumped up like the previous year, they had their heads down and were focussed. You could see it in their eyes. That will ultimately bring success, not trying to get the players to froth at the mouth before each game.

You brought up epic sporting whinges. Sorry, but you win hands down on that one!

@Rancid-Schnitzel really? over the Wayne Barnes whine?
That has to be one of the more embarrassing drawn out whines?
People still think he was the cause of our loss.

It was the All Blacks who looked a bit off kilter, as evidenced by Read's penalty after the Arnold try.
Compared to the second Bled, where we went too hard on the niggle and paid the price. Moore was noticeably different in how he dealt with the referee, too.
So I don't think the off-field chat necessarily equates to what happens on the ground.

Agree with this.
-
@barbarian the Moore thing is key I reckon, his communication, leadership and play has been lacking up until that match.
I think the Aussies, like the Argies showed that you attack the breakdown, slow or disrupt the ball to our backs and it affects our flow...yes our ability to counterattack is second to none, but we still play a pretty structured game when it comes down to it. But playing that way for 80 minutes is the challenge for other teams, because a couple of lapses and the game can go from a 5 point margin to 20 in a a very short space.

There were plenty of AB supporters that thought the Wallaby side of 1998-2001 were arrogant, disrespectful, cheats, refs favoured etc. I think I heard it all during that period. The we wuz robbed attitude was alive and well when last minute kicks "robbed us" of the Bledisloe.
I'm not saying everyone had that, but it did persist with some and the whinging did make its way to commentators and journalists.
It certainly did build this us v them feeling amongst the fans and even the players. I recall heaps of niggle in that era. OZ forwards thought they could bully us around because they were high on confidence after the 99 WC win.

Er yes. Unless they've planned a miniseries about that game. Seriously, they made a miniseries about it.
The amusing thing is that if that had happened to Aus in 2007 you can guarantee John Connolly would have had a meltdown at the press conference and Aus fans would not only be bitching about it now but also long into the future as well.

People were pissed off at losing, but I can't recall any of the coaches trying to create some kind of siege mentality or lashing out and claiming some kind of tag-team between team and press. I would also add that the pressure Cheika is under is probably nothing compared to what AB coaches face. Look at the shit Jon Hart had to put up with.
