@taniwharugby speaking of which it has only taken 24 hours for the govt to climbdown over putting GST on Kiwisaver contributions

Nga Kete is a residential facility where people on bail facing charges pay nearly $19,000 for a 12-week programme including treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

Pretty clear message sent by voters in most of the main centres today. I may not live in Dunedin, but I was thrilled to see Hawkins dropped.
Auckland is in the mood too. It appears many of those strongly affiliated with Jacinda are going down. Who knew Aucklanders loved their cars so much!

Voter apathy in Whangarei seemed to win on the day...with the current Mayor stepping aside, the top 2 candidates had 12,000 votes between them with around 60,000 registered to vote in the Whangarei District, and the winner was not who I voted for!!

@canefan I largely agree re AT but to me Brown comes across as a poor man's Bob Jones.
He's a reactionary with a very chequered political past. Most of his notion seem to me to be outdated.
The sad thing is none of the mayoral candidates inspired much confidence - not that the Mayor of the Akl Council has much real power anyway. If Brown really wants to make a difference, he's going to have to develop a consensus. He just seems too GOM to be able to do that.

Yeah I don't know if he can get it done. The bar was set pretty low. The council power base appears to have shifted though so he will have an opportunity

from what I can tell, the vast majority of new Mayors are all still opposed to the Govts
theft schemeThree Waters scheme, so will be interesting to see how that progresses. -

@antipodean Labour and the Greens hate farmers in short.

@antipodean The government has decided to risk economic calamity so that we can impress the world by decreasing our carbon emissions by enough to change worldwide emissions by about 0.04%.
My understanding is that if we do this we will get a special round of applause at the UN or somesuch. It’s inspirational if you think about it.
