Musk & Twitter

pfft i rode around a city in China in an autonomous bus 3 years ago.

@antipodean Lookup youtube videos of Tesla self driving beta, it's pretty impressive. Putting personalities aside, it's interesting tech and is being tested right now.
Yes, he makes wildly inaccurate predictions on delivery, but the same criticisms were made about landing boosters. Plenty of experts said that would never happen as well.
He seems to attact stawmen arguments on the internet like a magnet. He's never said they were anything other than tunnels to increase capacity for cars and move roads under ground in inner cities.
It's a solution for capacity and gridlock, a subway is a solution for inner city travel. For a train you have to walk at the beginning and end of your journey. This approach lets you continue your vehicle journey, and travel to it. US centric, sure, but they have a pretty big gridlock issue gettinn across cities and sprawling cities.
But lots of people think "yOu InVentED a tRain" is a great pwn.
Autonomous driving in my neighbour's tesla is, as far as I can tell, no different to my wife's Lexus.
- Stays in its lane. Mainly. Check.
- Shits itself when lanes merge. Check.
- Variable speed cruise control. Check.
- Identifies speed limit signs. Check.
The big difference is Lexus isn't promising autonomous driving every year. I'm a massive fan of the concept, but it turns out it's a massively difficult thing to do. Since TSLA is publicly tradeable stock, the SEC if it were barely competent would hold him to accou8nt for his bullshit.
His hyperloop. All promise, no delivery.
His boring company. All promise, no delivery.
Starlink by his own admission isn't a viable ongoing business in its current form.Everything funded on the absurd valuation of Tesla.
Someone mentions Spacex, I look to Rocket Lab.
In his favour I will admit that the cult of Musk has driven EV adoption. That's about it.

The cost to orbit for payloads more than 200kg has been revolutionised by SpaceX. If they get permission to drive starship launches, they could do another order of magnitude out of launches. Fully reusable rockets just boggle my brain.
So, not just EV, but revolutionising space access as well, and probably looking to colonise another world. That's a Pretty Big Deal
Edit: and he's a bit of a dick, too.

As I said, look at the beta current being tested by 100,000 people and tell me if a Lexus is even close.
FSD is coming and the camera system they are using is very impressive.
As for your other comments. Hyper loop was an idea he had that he gave to other people, he has no involvement.
Boring company is getting projects in a few cities, but it’s early days. It may pay off, it may not early days. Personally, I think that’s part of him getting his ducks lined up for Mars. He wants to build tunnels up there too.
Starlink is a weird one to criticise. They already have more satellites up there than anyone else, and they are delivering very good speeds in remote places.
He has complete control on his biggest cost, getting them to orbit, and is launching something like 60 a week.A global ISP that can connect anywhere in the world will be a license to print money. Think of third world countries that can skip costly infrastructure buildouts.
We’ve seen the military applications in Ukraine, USA forces are also interested. Plenty of clients for that.
As for comparing Rocket Lab to SpaceX, that’s just embarrassing. Lookup the tonnage to orbit, it doesn’t compare. The contracts with NASA for the new moon missions and the regular contracts from all over the world. Huge business.
Not to mention getting people up into space.
SpaceX is easily the best run and most impactful business Elon has. (Probably not a coincidence he’s not the CEO).
Elon can be a complete dickhead, but his business ideas are pretty disruptive and very successful.
We have not talked about his battery business or the solar stuff either.

I think Elon Musk is a true great, and will be the person of the 21st century.
However, he would be in jail for his corporate lies & front running if he was held to the same standards as all others.
It's those two facts as to why his popularity is so split down the middle.

And his Twitter posts.
Parts of our system are pretty corrupt. He’s certainly not the only one gaming the system and getting away with it.
Like I said, he’s not perfect and certainly a dick.
But the criticism I read is pretty inaccurate most of the time. It’s not hard to find out what he’s actually doing or what he’s said.
His portrayal in most media is fascinating. Wilfully inaccurate.

For @antipodean ‘s cold heart

I don't even know if I would agree he was a dick. He' just heavily on the spectrum and doesn't think the same as the average person.
And I'm fairly sure that his wealth means he can hire law/legal experts who can ensure that every single thing he's ever said and done he cannot be prosecuted for. Especially in the US.

I think that’s half the story, the other half is a Steve Jobs like impatience with other people.
I’m a fan, but I’d hate to work for him.
Many moons a go I attended a presentation by George Blankenship who worked directly with him after working for Jobs. It was an alternative fund managers forum and there were so many parallels to working with him to the world I used to work in.
Basically once Musk had made his mind up, that was it. You change the world to suit Musk's view never vice versa.
This obviously means that when it doesn't happen .... well, you buy twitter.

A lot of the reason for the recent hate from media is he has run afoul of the left wing propaganda machine by taking over Twitter. It was all good when he was the eccentric genius. Now, not so much.

Sure it is. My point was about the claim versus the reality.
As for your other comments. Hyper loop was an idea he had that he gave to other people, he has no involvement.
This is the working protptype:
A taxi rank with human piloted teslas. Even mining trucks can be autonomous.
Boring company is getting projects in a few cities, but it’s early days. It may pay off, it may not early days. Personally, I think that’s part of him getting his ducks lined up for Mars. He wants to build tunnels up there too.
He said his Boring Co. could construct tunnels at a tenth the cost using "rocket technology". It's literally nothing new and cities have experience attempting to relieve congestion with tunnels. Just look at Sydney...

He has complete control on his biggest cost, getting them to orbit, and is launching something like 60 a week. And yet even at his own admission, the economics don't work.

Customers in third world nations paying $100 a month for internet?
We’ve seen the military applications in Ukraine, USA forces are also interested. Plenty of clients for that.

In a competitive field. Rocket Lab are producing Neutron and aiming for a 24hr turnaround. If they can achieve that, they're miles ahead. Musk isn't known for having a good handle on opex.
Not to mention getting people up into space.

The batteries made by Panasonic? They're the ones with the meaningful IP in that relationship. The solar that didn't make money and was insolvent until Musk bailed it out to the tune of ~$2.6 billion?
-
By-far the funniest part of the latest PV honey-pot sting isn’t the bit about calling Musk “special needs”, but instead him talking about the leaked “Targetting of Tweeps” memo.
-
“Martinez's comments came just one day after Project Veritas released another video featuring Twitter senior engineer Siru Murugesan, who was caught saying Twitter "does not believe in free speech" and how a "capitalist" like Musk may come into conflict with Murugesan's fellow colleagues, who he described as being "socialist" and "commie as f---."”
-
@Frank I heard he was asked for comment the day before the story broke, declined and then went and made the tweet about voting Republican and claimed there would be attacks against him due to that.
The timeline for the story breaking after his tweet seems too short for me to think he at least didn't know the story was coming ahead of time so tried to front foot it.
If it's true and the woman only got $250k from a guy worth more than $200B then she got ripped off, I'd he seeking at least $5M to keep something like that quiet!
