An amazing effort by Japan.
But they haven’t let the outside world in

No mate. It’s just you. 😁

Eric clearly isn't living in Japan.
The rules for shops depend on whether they check your vaccine status (if they don't, they have to close earlier), and as Mike said, they are still not allowing much travel (residents or visa holders only). Businesses are screaming for the government to change the quarantine systems.
So, it's better and almost good, but this idea of 'celebratory' is pretty much bullshit.
People around me and at work are just getting on with it as we expect another wave during winter.

COVID-19 was a bioweapon
have to think if it were meant to be a bio-weapon, it is a pretty shit one.
Spray them with covid, wait a few days and hope they get sick enough that they die...
it's crazy really when you look at Covid by the numbers
People see that we're closing in on 5 million people dying of/with it and that seems fucking massive. But this virus emerged like 23 months ago. so on average, a bit over 217,000 people have died every month.
Which, on the surface, seems like fuckloads still. holy shit that's like 4% of NZs entire population!!
On average, this year, 4.8 million people die every month.
1.5m of those will die from heart disease alone. To counter balance. This year 11.5 million people are being born every month.
There are an absolute fuckload of people on earth, and really big numbers are hard to comprehend
So yeah, if this is a bioweapon, it's absolutely fucking rubbish unless your military goal is to wipe out old and sick people.
P.S. This is not a "Covid isn't real" post, this is a "big numbers without any form of context are meaningless"

Agree, as far as bioweapons go, it's pretty weak unless it was designed as a boomer killer, in which case it's still weak, but better at that than as an overall population reducer.

@godder a bomber killer! Developed by millennials wanting houses?
considering what house prices are doing, it's fucking useless at that as well

@mariner4life yea people hate on the sweeden response, but their death rate did not even breach the annual mean death rate ranges.
Pretty clear covid mostly kills those who are about to die. And % of unfortunate.
If you do a full cost benefit analysis the sweeden response is pretty good. With a bit of hindsight they could have done a few things(resthomes) much better.
I assume they have a great health care system and very healthy population so most countries probably perform worse with the same strat . Although they could have learnt from their mistakes.
-
NZ has insignificant death rate mainly due to the healthservice being protected by a surge but if you look at the demographics of those hospititalised by Delta and extrapolate deaths it doesn't necessarily mean only the old die
Also shows the benefitof getting vaxed in protecting you.
Similar results when you look at death rates in US - source CDC

@kirwan NZ ain't that much better!
We aren't great, particularly in some communities, but we are not as bad as the yanks!
Too much of it about in the western world. There are none of us that can be particularly proud these days.

I'm curious as to your definition of 'about to die'. You seem to be implying that COVID just tipped people over the edge.

I read that as over 80. Not a stretch to say people that old are about to die.

@kirwan I read somewhere - can't remember where but it was a report with some sort of gravitas - that it has been calculated that on average a Covid victim lost 10 years off their life. So not exactly 'about to die'
The life expectancy for NZ males is almost exactly 80 (83.5 for females).

I'm not interested in an argument about pendantics.
It's not wrong to say most Covid deaths are old people or people with underlying poor health factors. Sure there will be some expceptions to that, but it's generally true.
