so we need to do something to bring aussie rugby up
actually i think your plan just brings us all down
Our ABs, attracted by Aussie money, get their learning done by the admitted-by-everyone shit Aussie coaches, making them worse. Aussie players get their pathways blocked by superior NZ players, stunting their development.
Both Countries get worse. The 6N laughs themselves to sleep.
If they have shit Aussie coaches then they won't attract much top talent, regardless. They will need good Aussie or foreign coaches.
Restricting themselves to Aussie coaches would be as dumb as their player rules - only recruiting dual qualified Toni Pulu's and ignoring non qualified Caleb Clarke's.
If we want a good even comp then remove the dumb artificial barriers . If we want to keep the structural unevenness with even worse long term trend, then keep status quo.

@mariner4life we cant poo poo on every idea because the current admin is shit, yes, RA would need to do better...but they'll need to do that for any option to work
current? the ARU have ignored development pathways for the entire 20 years i have been involved in the sport in this country. In fact they have put up barriers to participation, with shit like levies to help pay off State Union deficits.

@antipodean and i supported it on the surface but it didn't explain where they would be situated or how they would draw supporters from the existing franchises, would people change teams? would you spit the crusaders? if not would you just dilute all the other teams and leave them miles ahead of everyone else?
Rework the pretence that the current franchises are aligned with existing unions and divvy them up.

I think what he is sayng conceptually could work, but you are right as well, RA has royaly screwed themselves sideways and havent enjoyed it in the process over many years
-
@mariner4life Raelene started overhauling that shit and Kearns, being the slackjawed fluffybunny that he is, got her sacked.
Her work also paid immediate dividends, ensuring guys like Harry Wilson didnt take the NRL money on offer.

There was one development officer for the West of NSW. They looked after the ripe areas of PI migrants by excluding the Emus from the lower tier and leaving it all for the NRL/ AFL.
That's the level of competence some want us to entrust current and aspiring All Blacks to to even the competition. When they don't move or not sufficient to have Australian teams win the comp, how long until we hear calls for a draft?

@antipodean i think this has come up before and think i said the only way i can see if being fair is for all new franchises, get rid of the five current ones so everyone is on the same footing, but even i know thats huge and will never happen

you can not start again, that would be suicide. The only way the current franchises go is if you revert to provinces. Creating 5 or 6 new entities would probably kill the remaining interest stone dead.
-
@mariner4life and i think making a couple of new ones is going to be too tough to build a supporter base, they'll always either be the little brother who never wins or if they buy their way to success everyone will hate them, its a circular argument that often comes back to the provincial unions, they have existing long term support and history
side point, im choosing to believe getting a headache from going around and around is a sign of a good debate!...or a tumor
-
@kiwiwomble more likely that there is no real answer and we are completely fucked.
-
Australian domestic comp has to be existing setups like Brumbies, Force & Rebels, and then 2 teams in QLD much like the NRC (which the QRU showed good chops in running), and then bring in the Sydney club sides who think they're shit-hot enough to make a go of it.
It is the ONLY way to get Sydney Rugby involved at that semi/pro level, because they've scuppered every other attempt. Every. One.
There needs to be changes of course; Sydney Uni, Randwick, Easts etc. can't just continue to be 4 Grades + 3 Colts sides.
Get your best 28 players for a senior squad. Have a localised EDIT: 1-team Colts comp to help with development.
The rest get told nicely to piss off to feeder clubs in Suburban Rugby where they can help lift the standard.

@nta thank you!

Seems RA are leaning towards an Aus only conference with a champions cup style play off at the end. Possibly with an Aus only final prior to the TT component.
Seems more or less what we did this year with the TT bit rejigged.
They also seem to want NZ tv money? That seems laughable.

I'm surprised they think it's worth anything.

@stargazer That would make one hell of a Fantasy rugby team!
Shows how much of a team effort it was for the blues...
