"If they get away with extraditing Julian Assange they could extradite Alan Rusbridger, and the editors and journalists from the Guardian, and put them inside in America for a very long time."
Heh now that really would be something!

Except nothing has stopped them from asking for that extradition already and they haven't done so. Any follow on charges would have to be after initial charges are proven.

It wouldn't happen as under the UK-US treaty, extradition can only occur if the activity is an illegal one in both the UK & the US. I posted it as an example of people making arses of themselves when ity comes to Assange - in this case a senior barrister who seems to have exposed himself as an idiot.
He's been charged with computer hacking in the US and not for exposing or publishing secrets.
-
@Victor-Meldrew 'Heh' is my laugh. I think its funny people thought that and something funnier would be Trump actually having the ability to extradite Guardian journalists for being as shit as they are.
-
The Guardian and The Daily Mail are two cheeks of the same arse IMHO. Poor checking of facts, misleading headlines and an agenda of whipping up outrage.

I’m of two minds. On the one hand, he needs to be released. He’s doing what any indpendent news organization would have done. On the other hand, I wished that he confronted these charges head-on in a court of law years ago. He’s been a political prisoner for years, he’s already been sentenced and served time.

@jegga there's already some truth bending going on in your post regarding Russia.
I totally get that it is quite rich for some with extreme views that supported his work only when it suited them and ignore it when it doesn't but it applies in both directions.
'Russiagate' is not nonsense with regard to participation of some parties (Russia and Assange)
There is no doubt that Russia attempted to influence the US elections AND there is no doubt that Wikileaks participated (even if as a pawn).
Keep those facts clear of any arguments about Trump Inc. collusion.
I was, you have misread my point or I wasn't clear enough.
The people who wanted to believe Russiagate were happy to believe any evidence that supported the theory and decided Mueller was a great american despite probably never having heard of him before he was appointed .
The people who wanted to believe the charges against Assange were bogus were happy to believe any evidence that supported that and that Marrianne Ny was corrupt and incompetent despite never having heard of her before she decided to lay charges against Assange.
Thats the parallel I was referring to, people who want to buy into these things exhibit some extreme cognitive dissonence .
Assange is an amoral creep, I'm glad those women might actually get justice. I see theres losers on the standard thread dismissing the rape charges as trumped up

Political prisoner? Thats a stretch , he was wanted on two charges of rape.
Sentenced and served time? That was his choice , he jumped bail to avoid trial.

The facts are he's a convicted criminal who jumped bail to avoid having to face rape charges. Pretty much says all you need to know about the bloke
The US want him extradited to face charges of computer hacking. Just because he calls himself a journalist is no more a defence or any different to Sun journalists being charged for hacking into people phones.

What part of “I wished that he confronted these charges head-on in a court of law years ago” don’t you understand?
Dial back that outrage some.

The part where you said he’s a political prisoner and sentenced and served time are the ones I found hard to understand.
I agree with you he should have sorted it out years ago , to claim the the other things you did didn’t outrage me it made me wonder what you were talking about .
-
Yeah, well I can be reliably foolish and assume that his seeking and aquiring asylum at the Ecudorian embassy for years had something to do with politics, but it’s just one persons’ viewpoint, marginal though it clearly is.

I don't know much about Assange. I get the rape charges thing, ( very similar to Polanski ) but my simpleton view on leaking classified info superficially suggests 2 things:
Were they factually true?
If so dangerous to modern society, why not "locked up" better?I know I'm wrong but is he such a threat to nations that he's the beast he's portrayed as.
Really keen to be corrected by youse fullas

Depends on who you ask , he had to be talked out of releasing the names of Iraqi and Afghanistani interpreters helping IS forces which is effectively a death sentence, had no qualms about doing the same to ICE staff though

Assume your taking about the classified info being released?
It doesn't follow that just because something isn't as secure as it could be, you can simply take it. It's called theft. Not much different from saying it's OK to nick a car because the keys were in the ignition
Whether sensitive information is true or not is irrelevant. It is classified for a reason and it isn't up to Assange to decide what should and shouldn't be released. Unless you believe a self-appointed Assange has the right to decide the release of names and addresses of teenage rape victims, bank accounts of judges and names and addresses of security personnel.
Finally, Assange isn't being charged for publishing the info. He is accused of hacking computer systems which is a completely separate, though related, thing.

@Victor-Meldrew nice one thanks. Got confused as some painted him as an independent journalist.
Apparently the sex charges were dropped in 2017. Some commentators with some credibility think he's performed some useful role in calling out government behaviour. "Hero" seems a bit of a stretch though
Again, I don't know enough

Not quite.... The complainants have requested they be reinstated so he can stand trial. They were put on hold as Assange jumped bail to avoid facing questioning in Sweden (as required under Swedish law).
